Vomiting, could it be concussion?

Probably massively overthinking this but...

Yesterday my ds 2yowas fine, ate all his lunch and was playing with his sister ect. Then we all went outside to play football and have a run around. Dh kicked the ball trying to get it in the goal (kicked it hard) and as it was about to land ds ran in front of it before I could stop him and it hit him on the front of the head. He wanted a cuddle but didn't really cry. Then when we came back home and gave him dinner he didn't eat any of it (not like him at all). Seemed fine at bath time and went to bed like normal.

Then this morning he's started projectile vomiting, no temperature, very pale skin and he just wants to lie on me on the sofa. Could it be related or is it likely just a bug and coincidental timing?

I would get him checked by a dr, hopefully it’s just a coincidence but worth checking.

natalienewname · 22/02/2021 09:41

I'm fairly chilled with injuries and illness but this would have me calling 111

Seeline · 22/02/2021 09:42

What are his chances of picking up a big? Is he at nursery or at home?

If the ball hit him hard it could be concussion. Did it knock him over? I think I might ring 111 for advice.

He's at home and we haven't been anywhere over the weekend, the only thing I can think of is that we had a health visitor appt on Friday.

It did hit him hard but didn't knock him over. He's had worse bumps in the past (he's a very active two year old who has a love of climbing! Shock) but never been ill afterwards

Call 111 op

Crockof · 22/02/2021 09:48

Call 111, probably coincidental but no harm checking

ThePricklySheep · 22/02/2021 09:50

What sort of ball is it? If it’s an actual football rather than a £1 lighter type then I’d take him in to A&E I’m afraid. We’ve had concussion a couple of times here so I’m vaguely familiar with the criteria.

Quartz2208 · 22/02/2021 09:52

Yes call 111

DD fell down the stairs straight onto her head, confusion and pain followed. Then she was sick (about 2 hours later) 4 times for around 3 hours.

A&E and a CT scan followed (CT scan I think comes in after 3 bouts of sickness after a head injury) which was clear. She gets motion sicknesses and we think the concussion and dizziness made it happen. She needed 24 hours total rest and then it took 3 weeks to get back to normal.

She also had concussion after a bucket fell on her head - this time she was sick and it kicked in around 8-9 hours later. Confusion accompanied it. 24 hours rest before she was back to normal

Wigeon · 22/02/2021 09:53

I would also call 111. When DD hit her head hard one morning aged about 3 or 4, and then started throwing up about 6 hours later, I called 111 who sent a paramedic in a car immediately, who took it seriously and thoroughly checked her over, and also said we could go to hospital for observation. DD actually felt a lot better after being sick, so we didn’t, and she was fine, but I’m glad the paramedic checked her all over.

littlemisschoclover · 22/02/2021 09:57

Thanks for the replies. I have phoned 111 and am now just waiting for a call back from a clinician

Yes unfortunately it was a proper ball. We bought it him last week for his second birthday as he is football obsessed...now feeling like the worse mummy ever!

Chances are it is coincidence but you would still be better having a chat with a professional just in case.

LDParty · 22/02/2021 10:06

That does sound like a head injury. Sorry OP. Your DH really needs to not be belting the ball around a 2 year old.

It was obviously an accident and Dh felt awful. I'm sure there are other parents who have accidentally done things like this

It could be delayed concussion which is v serious. DS had it after a cycling accident and was effected for 6 months, vomiting came about 12 hours after the injury and he was vague and disoriented on and off for a long time, it's definitely worth checking.

Funfacts99 · 22/02/2021 10:17

Accidents happen op. Try not to stress. My dd suffered concussion after a riding accident; she was fine after a day or so. Best to get it thoroughly checked though. Ime, hospitals never mind checking out two year old patients; better safe than sorry when they are little Flowers

Pythonesque · 22/02/2021 10:22

Not eating dinner last night could have been because he was becoming unwell with a bug causing this morning's vomiting. But absolutely you are doing the right thing to get him checked out first before assuming this! Hope things improve soon and you can be reassured.

ThePricklySheep · 22/02/2021 10:45

Just replace the ball with a lighter one Smile

littlemisschoclover · 22/02/2021 10:47

Have been advised to get him straight to a&e so off there now. Pretty sure it's a coincidence but wouldn't forgive myself if I didn't take him and something happened

joystir59 · 22/02/2021 11:26

Can't believe you've had to ask MN what to do!

SirVixofVixHall · 22/02/2021 11:27

Good luck OP. Could be a bug of course, but could definitely be concussion .

Quartz2208 · 22/02/2021 11:29

Good luck - concussion can take time to recover from. As I said DD has had bad concussion twice

And make sure you say exactly how many times he has thrown up

ShirleyPhallus · 22/02/2021 11:29

Good luck, hope he’s ok
