3 year old has UTI, advice needed please

My 3 year old DD suddenly got a really high temp and chills this afternoon and said her tummy was hurting. Got her straight to the gp and they said her temp was 41 and she had blood in her urine so they gave her antibiotics to treat a possible UTI. However twice since then she has been sick, both hours apart and both when her temp has got really high. Is sickness expected with a UTI?

Infection in the upper urinary tract generally affects the kidneys (pyelonephritis), which can cause fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, and other severe symptoms. The lower urinary tract consists of the bladder and the urethra.

Got that from Google.

Hope she feels better ASAP

Yes it can normal, are you giving calpol regularly and is she drinking plenty of fluid and keeping the antibiotics down?

kirstyc2 · 23/12/2020 20:46

Ah ok thank you! I tried to look online but couldn't see much. Was starting to panic that it might be a sickness bug but at least I know it's all part of the same thing x

Hi yes my son has just got better from a uti. He was really poorly vomiting , tummy ache , temperature. And a headache. It’s so horrible seeing them like it. Hope you’re little one gets better soon.

Yes she's had calpol and neurofen as calpol wasn't bringing her temp down. She's only had one dose of the antibiotics before bed but she spat half of it out so tomorrow I've got to find a way of getting her to take it all. Glad to hear it's normal with this type of infection so we know it's not something else! X

I hope your little boy gets better soon too! Feel so sorry for her as it's the first year she has understood Christmas and been so excited and now she's really poorly. Always the way! X

Keep an eye on her though as sepsis can have vomiting as a early sign.

Is she having regular wees?

If the antibiotics are 8 hourly would wake to give it and just check she's ok.

My DD was the same, vomiting, high temp, lethargic. She was given trimethoprim and within 24 hours her temp was back to normal and she pretty much herself again so don't write off Christmas day just yet!

She has been weeing a bit less but I've put that down to being a bit dehydrated because of her temp. I will have a look at that site thank you x

Ahh I'll keep everything crossed then!! We've been given amoxicillin so I'm hoping it will kick in soon x

Phone 111 for more advice - children can decline quickly & if you are worried trust that feeling to get another opinion.

Trust your gut op. Call without thinking.

Copperblack · 23/12/2020 23:22

If she is vomiting I would monitor very closely and consider A&E - these infections can develop very quickly, and sepsis is a possibility.

She's been up all night unfortunately. I gave her some calpol at 2am and she vomited it straight back up but she wasn't due neurofen so her temp just kept getting higher. Luckily she fell asleep at about 5am and is still sleeping now so hopefully she will wake up feeling a bit better x

OP if she cannot take her antibiotics due to vomiting she needs to be seen again as the infection will worsen and she will deteriorate. IV antibiotics may be needed in hospital.

OverTheRainbow88 · 24/12/2020 09:08

Yes I agree with above , I would try to get her seen today. Do you live near a children’s hospital? If she’s being sick, she may be bringing up her antibiotics.

kirstyc2 · 24/12/2020 09:15

Luckily she hasn't been sick again since the episode this morning. She had her antibiotics at 7.30 and has kept them down as well as some calpol so we're hoping we're turning a corner x

That’s promising. Has she got a high temp? Or a low body temp?

High but it's come down from yesterday. It's 39.5 now x

OP please call 111 for more advice. I've had a ride in the back of an ambulance with ?sepsis with my baby and it wasn't pleasant.

floorplanner · 24/12/2020 15:11

I'd get her seen again op.
