3 year old has UTI, advice needed please

My 3 year old DD suddenly got a really high temp and chills this afternoon and said her tummy was hurting. Got her straight to the gp and they said her temp was 41 and she had blood in her urine so they gave her antibiotics to treat a possible UTI. However twice since then she has been sick, both hours apart and both when her temp has got really high. Is sickness expected with a UTI?

Sorry to ask another question but she is definitely much better than yesterday after having more of the antibiotics, however she's not drinking very much at all despite me and my husband constantly asking her to drink and she's also now got diarrhoea because of the antibiotics, will this make her dehydrated? And will that affect her recovery from the UTI? X

Go to a&e
Why are you waiting. She will get dehydrated

OverTheRainbow88 · 24/12/2020 16:36

I would at least call 111.

With diarrhoea and not drinking much could easily lead to dehydration.

OverTheRainbow88 · 24/12/2020 16:58

Just had a Christmas FaceTime with a family member who’s an A&E doctor, and mentioned this. She said she would take the child to the children’s hospital for monitoring, maybe even fluids and antibiotic drip.

kirstyc2 · 24/12/2020 17:36

I've just called her gp and am awaiting a call back before 6 to get her opinion, it's the same dr that saw her yesterday so I'm hoping she will be able to help x

How much fluid is she having ad more importantly how often is she having a wee?

12098s · 24/12/2020 17:53

Sorry she is so poorly btw, it's super stressful having an ill child.

kirstyc2 · 24/12/2020 19:15

@12098s

She's only had one cup of squash today, hasn't been for a wee since this morning. I spoke to the dr tonight and she said as long as her temp has come down and she seems ok in herself then I don't need to worry. She said just try to get her to drink a little more tomorrow x

Do you have ice poles or ice lolly's she can have?

Cyw2018 · 24/12/2020 19:28

My nearly 3 yo DD had a UTI a few weeks ago. She was happy having ice lollies (mostly had home made yoghurt and mango lollies which were in the freezer already). At this point it really doesn't matter how you get fluid into your DD just that you do, so lollies, ice cream, custard, jelly, whatever she fancies really.

Hope she's better soon.

OverTheRainbow88 · 24/12/2020 19:30

Well keep an eye on her and if her temp is still in 39s tomo I would defo take her in.

When my son was ill and wouldn’t drink I would fill a cup of water and let him suck up that water with a calpol syringe and squirt it into his mouth- he found it hilarious and it made him drink

windowstothesoul · 24/12/2020 19:31

I am not medically trained & I know you spoke to the GP but one wee and one drink does not sound ok - mixed with other symptoms.

If she does not pick up or wee/drink in the next few hours and/or she is not ok in herself and you are worried do phone 111 or go to local Children's A&E.

Have you used a syringe to get some fluid in? 5mls of juice every 15mins is a good target until they can tolerate more?

Keep an eye on temp & her general self -

Thanks

I did think this but to be honest I am so conflicted about what to do 😭. She won't drink because yesterday when she drank she vomited it all back up and is now scared despite us telling her she will be ok. However I'm cautious of taking her to hospital because 1. Were in the middle of a pandemic and I'm worried that would be the worst place to be at the moment and 2. Her brother (18 months) has suddenly come down with a really high temp and cold like symptoms tonight so really we shouldn't be going out. I just don't know what to do x

Take her to hospital. Don't worry about her catching covid. The risk to her is dehydration. She may need a drip. Take her in.

windowstothesoul · 24/12/2020 20:11

Reading all your posts objectively- I would take her in if she was mine & if you were a friend would be advising you the same -

Kids compensate for a while, but can then decline rapidly -

I think she needs to be seen by a paediatrician - lots of things to prevent via a hospital route - dehydration, hypoglycaemia as well as getting on top of the infection.

Others may disagree but just sharing my opinion-

Pack an overnight bag for you both, a mask for you and if she has one - one for her & go -

ChablisandCrisps · 25/12/2020 12:40

@windowstothesoul has great advice. I hope you followed it last night and your DD has been seen. Merry Christmas OP Xmas Smile

windowstothesoul · 26/12/2020 09:54

@kirstyc2 how are you getting on?

kirstyc2 · 26/12/2020 11:47

We spoke to the dr on Christmas Eve who said to wait and see how she got on overnight. Luckily by Christmas morning she was drinking lots more. She's still having diahhrea because of the antibiotics but she is almost fully back to her normal self apart from that now x

So pleased to hear that -

OverTheRainbow88 · 26/12/2020 13:42

Yes same, was unusually concerned about someone I’ve never met.

SomethingsGottaChange · 27/12/2020 22:31

With both children having temperatures.
I think you all need to be isolating and having covid tests

Luckily we know the reason behind both of their temperatures so we wouldn't need to get them tested.
