Bruises on shins normal or GP

My 4 year old has been a bit off for a week or so, prone to chest infections but nothing like that at the moment.

Tired, leg ache, tummy ache, thought possible a urine infection brewing - but over the last 24hrs she has bruises on her shin, possible some from legitimate bike rides, but more seem to be appearing, I wondered if they look like normal bruises or would they cause you concern?

I know you can't fully tell, picture is not super clear either - but opinions welcome.

I'd be concerned at bruises like that from bike rides anyway, I guess it depends on how long ago they were and how long after the bruises appeared.

LovingLola · 20/05/2020 23:52

I think I would be concerned
I’d look for an appointment and blood tests

LovingLola · 20/05/2020 23:53

Actually are there any other bruises or just her shins?

Aberforthsgoat · 20/05/2020 23:54

Are you sure they're bruises and not some kind of rash? I'd get that checked out asap if there wasn't any obvious accident etc that could have caused them

SouthWestmom · 20/05/2020 23:55

If it's just her shins I wouldn't be worried but my dc have a bleeding disorder so I'm used to massive bruises from any activity.

I might keep an eye and if they went down and none appeared write it off as the bike ride.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 20/05/2020 23:57

Please seek medical attention quickly.

My son's legs have bruises pretty much constantly but I can always tie them to something he's bumped himself on. Do you think there's something (bike pedals, steps, ?) that would make those bruises in that particular area?

TGear · 21/05/2020 00:05

Unexplained bruising can be a symptom of sepsis. Contact 111 now.

YouKnowWhoo · 21/05/2020 00:06

My daughter was absolutely riddled with bruises likE that - far worse in fact - which totally terrified me - the week she learned to ride her bike without stabilisers. She was at her Dads for the week and came home with these crazy small bruises, to this day I can’t believe how bad they were, I took photos immediately as I was going to get her to a GP but it was clear they were going down next day and every day significantly with nothing new appearing. But it was alarming.

Take lots of pictures so you can compare daily.

InterestingIris · 21/05/2020 00:08

My 3 year olds legs are constantly covered in scabs and bruises...but his legs are an array of colour as the bruises are clearly at different stages...blue, purple, that greeny yellow colour as they heal.

These all look pretty uniform, like they’ve appeared at the same time. If there’s nothing obvious to have caused them and she’s off colour I’d probably get her checked.

TGear · 21/05/2020 00:13

Just for context, the pp comparing bruises to their children are not also mentioning a queried infection.

Frogsandsheep · 21/05/2020 00:16

I’d ring 111 if they have appeared quickly especially as they have other symptoms xx

My sons legs used to look just like that. Normal.

Ilovecats14 · 21/05/2020 00:51

Obviously do get it checked if you are worried i just meant my son looked like that as his foot always slipped of the pedal then bashed his leg leaving bruises like that, plus he was so clumsy

hatscatsmats · 21/05/2020 02:07

Thank you all for replying.

She is ok in herself, no other red flags to go out tonight & baby in cot etc outside of Covid, I may have gone after posting/reading your replies but our local hospital where 111 would send you for OOH is Covid hotspot so will wait till morning for GP.

She is asleep next to me, so keeping a close eye.

There is a genuine chance they are from a bike ride/without stabilisers but some are odd placement, above the knee. I have zoomed in to a photo taken Tuesday afternoon. Some bruises on the photo but will show doctor the change. There are none on other areas of body just legs.

Coincidentally she has routine consultant appointment tomorrow although it is on the phone due to Covid-19, if no luck with GP i can mention it all.

Zoomed in picture from Tuesday afternoon attached.

My shins are covered in bruises (I have 7 on my right leg and haven't fallen off a bike in years) and like me, my kids seem to bruise relatively easily but if it's new for her, I'd definitely get it checked out.

eeehbyegum · 21/05/2020 03:00

She looks like a normal child. With normal bruises.

I would not be concerned about her bruising at all.

They are regular size, on one leg (which you've admitted was likely due to injury), normal pattern, colour etc.

hatscatsmats · 21/05/2020 09:29

I have made a telephone appointment as she has been generally off for a week or so with tummy ache, low fever - as per first post & will mention the bruises as may be low iron etc as new for her or as many say just normal -

The doctor sent her down to be seen, she has had bloods, results later today.

Fingers crossed for you

YouKnowWhoo · 21/05/2020 16:46

I think with Covid I would get it checked out. Kids experience nausea more as a symptom than adults. Good luck OP.

ActuallyItsEugene · 21/05/2020 16:55

Blood tests sounds like a good idea. I hope everything is okay, OP. Thanks

thethoughtfox · 21/05/2020 16:55

Mine has just learned to ride a bike and their legs look just like that.

Cupoftchaiagain · 21/05/2020 19:26

Hi hope your little one is ok
