What could this be? Pics included

Hi all,

What could these spots be? 1 year old.

Chickenpox? Although I'm not sure how he could have caught them as we haven't really left the house for 5 weeks! (The odd walk here and there other than that we've been in our garden) his 2.5 year old sister has no spots.

He does have eczema, which is where the spots first started appearing - so I thought it was eczema related to start with.

He had his 12 months jabs on 7th April - Thought it could perhaps be a reaction to the MMR but now the spots are starting to get pus filled / white heads!

He's had a stinking cough and cold with a slight fever for 2 weeks.

Spots are on his chest, neck and back of his head. They started about 4 days ago, just a cluster around his eczema then a few more, then they seem to start looking like whiteheads and then turn into red nasty looking sores. They are sore and itchy. He cries if he/you touch them.

Any help would be appreciated!

I'd seek a gp appointment as they may be infected. They dont look typically like chicken pox. MMR can have reactions at different times afterwards but dont know if those spots would be related to it

Longdistance · 21/04/2020 20:39

Could be molluscum? Loads of the kids in our school had it. I’d maybe get a doc to look too to confirm.

dementedpixie · 21/04/2020 20:40

Have you spoken to the gp about the cough/fever, etc too?

dementedpixie · 21/04/2020 20:40

It's not molluscum, doesn't look anything like it

Neolara · 21/04/2020 20:44

Doesn't look particularly like chicken pox to me. I'd ask the gp. Maybe get a video call. My friend who is a go says her surgery is very quiet at the moment.

woollylizard · 21/04/2020 20:46

Not molluscum. I'd be asking a dr to check that OP. Also, incase it is chicken pox ensure you don't give ibuprofen.

DangerMouse17 · 21/04/2020 20:47

Poor kid, looks painful Sad

Definitely a GP visit pronto, especially with the fever and given some spots look like they could be infected. My ds had a reaction to MMR but was very different to this rash.

ofwarren · 21/04/2020 20:52

My son's eczema turned into a staphylococcus rash and looked like that. They started near his eczema and then spread.
Do you have any fucidin to put on them till you can contact a GP?

GoodStuffAnnie · 21/04/2020 20:54

Poor baby.

It fits the pattern of chicken pox. It might not look very chicken poxy because of his excema. What do u put on his excema?

Defo see GP. Don’t be afraid. He needs to be checked out. Xxx

Makinglemonadefromlemons · 21/04/2020 20:56

Definitely worth a call to the GP, they don’t look or sound like chickenpox.
Hope all is well

RandomMess · 21/04/2020 20:59

Definitely needs a GP appointment.

Poor DS!

BingIsWhyIdrink · 21/04/2020 21:32

Definitely need a GP appointment but for what it's worth my DD has eczema and also had molloscum and it looked exactly like that. The molloscum started like a skin tag then got more angry and red til it was a pus filled spot really raised and red that she cried if I went near. He eczema seemed worse in her creases (which is where the molloscum seemed to be too - neck, armpits, groin etc. The pus/yellow/white head is highly contagious if it is molloscum so avoid touching/spreading if possible. Hope you can get an appointment.

dementedpixie · 21/04/2020 21:35

Molluscum doesnt come up and burst within 4 days. They are slow growing and last months

nearlyfinished1moreyear · 21/04/2020 22:02

Hi possibly impetigo?

Alfiemoon909 · 21/04/2020 22:27

Thanks all - I will phone GP tomorrow morning, they are very good and his GP will see him tomorrow (or at least a video call anyway)

He had impetigo in February in which he was on antibiotics for. Secondary to that, he got septic arthritis in his left knee, so had surgery, IV antibiotics for a week in hospital then 4 weeks of oral antibiotics. Since coming off his antibiotics he's had the cold / temperatures (which he's seen the GP for twice and they say it's unrelated just viral)

Poor wee soul, he's not a good time of it. Hope he recovers soon

MoonlightMistletoe · 21/04/2020 22:50

That red blotch is concerning and I'd be worried about meningitis so please don't wait until the morning.

dementedpixie · 21/04/2020 22:55

There are also rashes that are implicated in coronavirus cases so be aware of that too especially if he has a cough and temperature as well.

BigBairyHollocks · 21/04/2020 23:02

Doesn’t look like chicken pox or impetigo to me, definitely get him seen sooner rather than later. Sounds like the poor mite has been through the wars.Sad

GiveMeAllTheGin8 · 21/04/2020 23:07

I would get medical advice tonight if possible with his history. What’s his temp?

orlarose · 21/04/2020 23:16

It doesn't look like chickenpox to me. It looks very angry and I agree with pp that given his medical history I'd seek advice sooner rather than later.

Alfiemoon909 · 21/04/2020 23:31

Temp is normal at the moment - 36.7 but I did give him calpol earlier on this evening.

He's okay in himself - his cold is making him grizzly / very clingy and obviously the spots are sore & itchy (they only started looking angry today) but he's playing with his sister, eating, drinking, interacting with us and generally okay.

Hope it doesn't sound like I'm being blaize / minimising your comments. Just trying to give you an overall picture of how he is.

I will seek medical advice tonight. I still have open access to paeds due to the septic arthritis so I will phone them. I just didn't want to be wasting their time if it was just me being overly anxious and they turned
me away, rolling their eyes!!

Callimanco · 21/04/2020 23:35

Really doesn't look like a meningitis rash.
But it does look a bit angry.
If it wasn't for the heads, I would suggest a post viral urticaria.

GiveMeAllTheGin8 · 22/04/2020 13:48

How’s your ds doing ?

CtrlU · 22/04/2020 13:50

Poor thing

OP as you said he had impetigo before - is it possible it has returned ?
Obviously his immune system is low x
