Bad thrush

SleepForTheWeak · 07/03/2020 08:01

DD2 (2.8) has what I think is thrush. Very red and irritated vulva and bum. There were spots as well - I went to the pharmacy and got cream (yesterday) but it's not really helping and the spots are quite pronounced. There are also some on her thighs and a couple on her bum cheeks.

Is there anything I else I can do to help her discomfort? Could it be something other than thrush?

She's not had Chicken Pox before but there are no spots anywhere else.

She's also potty trained so not in nappies.

She needs to be seen by a doctor who can diagnose and treat accordingly. 'Thinking' it is thrush and buying cream isn't really enough.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 07/03/2020 08:12

Yep, get her to a doc, there's other things it might be too

dementedpixie · 07/03/2020 08:15

Could be the start of hand foot and mouth as it can affect the crotch area too

SleepForTheWeak · 07/03/2020 08:27

Yes I'll be making her an appointment on Monday, was just asking in the meantime

OP posts:
purplebob · 07/03/2020 08:39

You could be putting cream on that's totally wrong. She needs to be seen before Monday. You say you want to ease her discomfort, the best way to do that is have her problem diagnosed and treated as soon as possible. She has had this since at least yesterday, Monday will be 4 days. That is too long.

SleepForTheWeak · 07/03/2020 09:10

@purplebob do you suggest I take her to a&e for it?! It's not an emergency - she's happily playing, eating, she's not got a fever etc

OP posts:
purplebob · 07/03/2020 09:22

do you suggest I take her to a&e for it?! It's not an emergency -

No, I don't see anywhere at all in my posts that suggest going to A&E. You do however have options, which I am quite sure you are aware of. No need to leap to the idea of A&E as a defence for not getting her looked at.

she's happily playing, eating, she's not got a fever etc

But she is in 'discomfort' and you have just bought some thrush cream which may not even be the correct course of action. Get her seen fgs.

SleepForTheWeak · 07/03/2020 10:00

I know my options, and that is A&E or wait until Monday for the doctors to open. We don't have anything else available here.

dementedpixie · 07/03/2020 10:02

Do you not have out of hours services?

SleepForTheWeak · 07/03/2020 10:04

@dementedpixie no unfortunately not. The joys of rural living.

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 07/03/2020 10:06

If it is related to HFM then they wouldn't be able to do much anyway

BecauseReasons · 07/03/2020 10:07

Google walk in centres in your area? You might have to drive a bit though.

In future, go straight to the GP for a proper diagnosis rather than wasting time testing out your DIY diagnostic skills first. To be fair to you though, I'm amazed the pharmacist didn't at least ask if you'd had it diagnosed properly, especially given that it's for a toddler. That's on them, really.

Give as much bare bum time as possible. I might also be tempted to try the yellow metanium.

purplebob · 07/03/2020 10:08

Well you managed to go to a chemist yesterday and buy thrush cream. Why can't you go today and have the pharmacist take a look? That way they can either diagnose and recommend treatment or tell you that it's something a doctor needs to see/prescribe for?

Its bad enough that you are not having your DD checked for 4 days but the fact that you are actively treating it with a thrush cream without knowing what it is, that's even worse.

I don't believe for a minute that you don't have access to either 111 to signpost you or an out of hours or walk in service, presuming you are in the U.K./

It may be that she does have thrush, so your course of action is correct or it could be a whole manner of other things which may either need no treatment or a different treatment, but won't be helped by thrush cream+

SleepForTheWeak · 07/03/2020 10:12

@BecauseReasons the closest one is 3 hours away.

It looked like thrush, typical thrush, I didn't think it was a case for the GP. I did what I thought was the right thing and spoke to a chemist who said it sounded like thrush. He gave me cream and said if it doesn't clear up or gets worse then go to the doctor.

So, that's where I'm at. It's now Saturday so can't get seen until Monday (that's if I'm able to get an appointment)

I was hoping someone might come along and say they had a single experience with their child or a bit of advice (we are doing pants free time although she ends up touching her bum which isn't helping)

People on Mumsnet are very good at trying to make you feel like shit, I wonder had I asked the same at a toddler group for example that I would have been spoken to in the same manner

OP posts:
SleepForTheWeak · 07/03/2020 10:17

@purplebob there is no walk in clinic anywhere near.

A trip back to the chemist is a good idea, i never thought of actually letting them see her. Thank you, had you advised in a more polite way that would have been even better.

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 07/03/2020 10:18

I'd slather on sudocrem or similar cream

Anyoed · 07/03/2020 10:21

Hi op. Sorry to hear your child is in discomfort. I understand how hard it is when you life in an area with no out of hours. I
The same and have to use buses so not fun. My son had very similar with the spots around his privates legs then a few weeks as later went to his face armpits and feet and mouth. Turned out to be hand foot and mouth disease. Couldn't do much he did have a bad fever though. I just put some cream to eas the pain. And carpol for the fever. Maybe try some nappy cream to see if it helps. And try to get to the drs as soon as possible Monday.

purplebob · 07/03/2020 10:21

N

Not intended. The posts were about the importance of getting your child seen, not about making you feel good, bad or anything in between.

MI wonder had I asked the same at a toddler group for example that I would have been spoken to in the same manner

Tbh I would have been worse if you were dicking about at toddler group with a child who needed medical attention.

It really isn't about you OP. My focus has been in the fact that your DD should be seen.

SleepForTheWeak · 07/03/2020 10:22

@dementedpixie I did do that when her bum was just at the 'little bit red' stage but when it got worse that's when I thought it was thrush.

It does look like thrush, but the spots on her thigh were what threw me, I didn't know whether that was typical of a thrush infection as neither my DDs have had one before. That's why I asked, if loads of people replied saying 'oh yes that happened to my DD and it cleared after a few days of thrush cream' then I would know not to worry as much.

Obviously that hasn't happened, which means it probably isn't typical and I'll be taking her to get checked at the soonest possible opportunity

OP posts:
SleepForTheWeak · 07/03/2020 10:24

If you didn't intend it, perhaps think a bit more carefully about your choice of wording.

She has some spots on her bum that looked like thrush, I stand by my decision of speaking to a chemist for what I thought was a minor issue. The fact it's got worse and it's a Saturday is the problem.

OP posts:
SleepForTheWeak · 07/03/2020 10:28

@Anyoed thank you.

My daughter is also ill with strep throat at the moment, my husband is working literally at the other side of the world this week and I have not one family member here either.

It's not even been 24h since starting the cream, so it may very well clear it up. It might not, but yea I'm definitely phoning the doctors first thing on Monday and hope I can get her seen (unless of course it improves dramatically before then)

She's actually just said she's just got a 'little sore bum' and not a 'big sore bum' now so that's good

OP posts:
SleepForTheWeak · 07/03/2020 10:28

I should clarify - my OTHER daughter, not the same one

OP posts:
Thislittlefinger · 07/03/2020 10:30

FWIW op we are in the same situation regarding Dr's and healthcare so I'd have done exactly what you did. I think that's a pretty harsh reaction to a Mum who is doing her best. If it is thrush Biokult can help ease the symptoms. I'd think maybe it is HFM tho if spots are on bum as well.

SleepForTheWeak · 07/03/2020 10:36

@Thislittlefinger thanks. The ones on her bum are JUST outside her bum cheeks so could be related. But the couple on her thighs are a bit further down.

Hopefully by the end of the day we'll see an improvement

OP posts:
Floraflower3 · 07/03/2020 10:44

I hope you get it sorted soon OP and your DD feels better.

Other posters were very harsh. You did the correct thing going to the pharmacy first and tbh unless the child is really distressed or unwell, I don't think 111 is appropriate and waiting until Monday is fine. The cream needs time to kick in also. What are the 'spots like as spots aren't typical of thrush?
