Lump in DD 10 Neck. So worried.

Hi everyone

Would appreciate some advice or support please. A few days ago I noticed a small lump in my daughter's neck area. Its half way down her neck and in line with her ear. The lump moves around when touched but it doesn't appear to be causing her any pain or discomfort.

After trying in vain to see our usual GP, I gave up and took her to a walk in centre today. The doctor who looked at it appeared baffled and said she didn't know what it was. She said the best thing would be to get seen by our regular GP as soon as possible and he could refer us if there was a need.

I went straight to my GPs afterwards and have managed to get an appointment for 9.30 tomorrow morning. I am beside myself with worry and don't know how I will get through the night. I'm trying to put a brave face on for my DD but she can tell I'm really worried and she's feeling anxious now as well.

Are there any GPs on here who can reassure me? Or anyone else who has experienced this? Anything would help.

Me and my son both have a similar thing, and with both of us it's just a random gland that sits out a bit.

Mine appeared after I had glandular fever, he was born with his. I had his checked and the GP was reassuringly bored by it Grin

Good luck, hope you'll get reassurance tomorrow.

Drum2018 · 06/02/2020 19:12

Could it be her glands? Dd always had a small lump in her neck but it was her gland and would swell more when she was sick. I brought her to the gp about it years ago and he told us not to worry. Hopefully your dds is a similar situation.

How big is it?

I have a smallish (maybe a little more than 1cm) moveable lump in my neck which has been there forever. It’s a lymph node.

My children have them pop up from time to time when they’re poorly and they hang around for a bit and then disappear again.

Reginabambina · 06/02/2020 19:14

Most likely a swollen lymph node. Very common in children.

Asvan · 06/02/2020 19:15

I don't know what it is. She's not been poorly or anything recently and is fit and well. Will the doctor send her for more tests? Or will he know what it is straightway? I really don't want to be waiting around for results as I turn into a nervous wreck.

Also does a lymph node move around? Hers moves around under the skin and is completely painless. I am thinking the worst....

I saw this in 'GP's behind closed doors' it was a lymph node - they can be moved around and can be seen under the skin.

Fishcakey · 06/02/2020 19:17

I have a few that appeared when I was in my teens. They are something to do with cysts on my lymph glands. They feel like peas and move around under my finger. Hopefully they are just something similar.

perhapstomorrow · 06/02/2020 19:18

When my ds was 6 months old he developed a lump in exactly the same place. It rapidly got larger and turned out to be an infected lymph node. Was treated with antibiotics.

Asvan · 06/02/2020 19:20

Thanks to all of you. I don't know why the doctor at the walk-in centre looked so baffled, the fact that she didn't know what it was really scared the life out of me. Got a long night ahead of me tonight...

AudacityOfHope · 06/02/2020 19:21

Yes, they sort of move around under the skin of you move it under your fingers.

Asvan · 06/02/2020 19:21

It's about 1cm.

Thanks to all of you for putting my mind at ease. I've had a lot of bad news lately so just can't think positive.

I have one too. Had it checked and the dr said its a gland thats sticking out. Ive had it since early teens and im in my 30s now. Never had an issue with it.
Try not to worry, its most likely nothing.

JJPC · 06/02/2020 19:24

I’ve always been told that lumps moving is a good thing.

User24689 · 06/02/2020 19:28

I noticed a lump on my 2 year Olds neck a couple of weeks ago. My DM is a nurse and advised me to watch it for a couple of days then go to GP. Within a week I couldn't find it again! Most likely he was fighting off some infection.

I googled a map if the lymph nodes which was useful. It reassured me the lump was in the exact position of one.

Hope you get reassurance tomorrow.

bobstersmum · 06/02/2020 19:37

My ds age 7 (just) has had three lumps in his neck all in a row since reception. I panicked when I found them and took him straight to gp. They said likely lymph nodes and tried to send me away. I demanded blood tests and it came back clear. He also saw a Dr at the hospital who said very likely lymph nodes as he was otherwise well. They are very movable. I was told that's a good sign.

Asvan · 06/02/2020 20:38

Thank you so much to everyone, I really appreciate all your posts. You have all put my mind at some ease. I will keep you all updated.

Update: took DD to GP this morning who checked her neck area thoroughly and found some other tiny lumps around the same area. He said it just seemed like swollen lymph nodes and it's nothing to be alarmed about. He has referred us for a blood test just to rule anything sinister out. I'm still a bit worried and won't be getting much sleep until I get the all clear.

Only just seen your update op, fingers crossed you get good news asap, I'm sure it is just lymph nodes, try not to worry.

waterlego · 08/02/2020 08:54

Glad you have been reassured by the posts here and by the visit to the GP.

My son (11) has an enlarged node in his neck which initially came up when he was little and had a cold. It has never gone back down. I suffer with health anxiety so bothered our GP with it and ended up with a referral to a paediatrician and then an ENT specialist. All concluded it was ‘just one of those things’ and not to worry unless the lump grew or if other signs of illness appeared.

HouseOfCrayCray · 08/02/2020 10:48

Hi OP, just wanted to reply as this may help ease your worry a little bit. My two youngest have litte lumps all around their necks. They've been there years, I've been to the GP about it & blood tests have been done. (My GP's were also clueless for some reason) They're lymph nodes but absolutely nothing to worry about, some are just more prominent than others. Aside from this, I also discovered about 5 in my own neck about 4 years ago. Totally panicked, got a scan/bloods etc & again they're just lymph nodes. I was told contrary to what Google says, they quite often can be felt & sometimes never go down. Mine are still there now. I completey understand the awful feeling of dread you must have, I've been there. I'm sure it's nothing to worry about, hopefully you'll have answers soon to confirm this & stop the worry.

Asvan · 09/02/2020 21:17

Thanks for the well wishes everyone. I have tried not to worry about it over the weekend but it's just so difficult. I took her in for the blood test on Friday evening at 4pm, would the lab have already checked the blood? Or do they not check at weekends? I've got an appointment at the GPs on Thursday to discuss the results but I'm not sure if I can wait until then.

bobstersmum · 09/02/2020 21:23

Yes the bloods will be done. Ring tomorrow and you should get the results. Here, the bloods get sent off that day and they are done overnight. Good luck

Asvan · 09/02/2020 21:26

Thanks. Will the GP already have the information? And if it had been anything serious would they have contacted me by now?
