My son has meningitis and I'm trying to hold myself together

Fever since Monday- no other obvious symptoms. Took to A&E on Thursday as started shaking and grunting when temp spiked. Told probably a virus and sent home and to bring back if he still has a fever in 4 days. No bloods or tests done.

Took him back Saturday as I just knew he wasn't ok. Made them do bloods, chest X-ray and urine sample.
His CRP was 270! He was admitted and thought was probably a bacterial infection so blood cultures sent off and given a dose of antibiotics.
Didn't improve so doctor did a lumbar puncture to rule out the '10%' chance it was meningitis...

And it is. My poor baby has meningitis. He's 11 months old and I'm so so lost right now. They think it's bacterial but appears to be somewhat mild as the white blood cell count was 8.

I don't really know what all this means. As all I hear and think of are horror stories.

How do people cope with this? I can't sleep or think straight. And I miss my daughter at home.

Ah, wonderful news! Good good good!

heyjoeyitsestelle · 26/01/2020 23:19

He's been readmitted. I'm lying next to him in bed back on the ward struggling to sleep.
He spiked a fever last night and every time the neurofen wears off since.
Infection markers are back up and he's not a happy bunny. Few tests done today- more tomorrow. Can't believe we're back here 😭

hoping its just a small setback - after being so poorly, it will take some time to get things completely back to normal.

I have just read this thread, so sorry to hear your ds is back in hospital. Really hope it's just a small set back and he's back home crawling around in no time!

painintheholeSIL · 27/01/2020 02:09

My ds had it at 7 weeks old @heyjoeyitsestelle I will never forget the terror I felt as long as I live. I remember sitting on the floor, staring at him, unable to speak to my husband or anybody else.
He's almost 4 now and just woke me up with his bed hopping..
I'm thinking of you and I hope you're home with your lovely boy asap. Thanks

DeTwamps · 27/01/2020 02:22

Just came across this thread now. You're so lucky you forced them. It's not good enough.
I hope whatever this relapse is, that it's just something minor.

yellowitsme · 27/01/2020 22:08

Really sorry to here about you LO @heyjoeyitsestelle hopefully he’s on the mend soon!

When my own LO when in hospital he had quite a few stays. Me and my partner would alternate nights so that he spent one night then I spent one night as we also another kid at home! It’s was horrible but it helped to go home and have a wash and a good meal and spend time with older kid before swapping again.

Fingers crossed your family is back together soon

rainbowstardrops · 27/01/2020 22:25

Oh bless you all. Hoping this is just a blip and your little boy bounces back really soon 🤞🏻

StealthPolarBear · 28/01/2020 11:54

Hey op, how is he doing?

heyjoeyitsestelle · 28/01/2020 12:07

God knows what's going on. He's now covered in a nasty rash. Has really bad thrush too so he's very uncomfortable.
They've swabbed and found another virus in his nose and are now taking blood to check whether it's there too.
He has a theatre slot for 1.45pm today but they don't even know what's going on because he's under 3 different departments and it appears they're shit at just talking to each other.

Hello,

How is he getting on? Hopefully you have better news for us!!

Having Haemophilis influenza in your blood is very rare, so you have been unlucky. I'm a microbiologist in a fairly large lab and we've only seen it a handful of times over the years. I'm so sorry.
