Mark on skin growing

Noticed this mark about four weeks ago. I thought it was a scab from some sort of bump. It's actually doubled in size in the last month. It can wait until we get to the gp, right?

Long long history of unidentified health issues with this kid. He's just about to turn three

Any pigmented growth that is growing rapidly needs to be investigated immediately. Chances are it's something completely benign. Moles are common and do grow, but something that's doubling in size is worth looking into.

Bitofnamechanging · 28/12/2019 20:51

My plan is to take him to the gp monday morning. We are at the doctors a lot and I worry that they'll think I'm crazy for taking him for something so minor. We've been pushing for answers to his health issues and I worry that they'll start to worry about our concerns. I don't even know if they makes sense

GP on Monday will be fine, this should be checked but isn’t an emergency.

Bitofnamechanging · 28/12/2019 20:58

They'll ask when I call on monday if it's an emergency so we shall see what they say

A fair haired child with a growing mole on the top of their head, I'd hope they treat it as fairly urgent. It may not be an immediate emergency appointment, but he needs checking ASAP.
Hope all's ok, and please reassure yourself that getting him checked is the best thing to do! Brew

Bitofnamechanging · 30/12/2019 17:44

Thanks. It seems to have grown again today and has a slightly lighter colour outline on the new bit. He has a doctor appointment tomorrow afternoon

I hope everything turns out ok OP

Bitofnamechanging · 30/12/2019 19:23

I wanted to take another picture but the light wasnt good enough. I'm sure it's fine. I'll update after his appointment tomorrow.

It's definitely growing at an alarming rate though. Bizarre

Suzie81 · 31/12/2019 03:35

It's odd that it's growing at fast. I'm not even sure visible growth in a mole over a 24 hour period is even possible. Will be interesting to see what they think it is. Hope all goes well.

Bitofnamechanging · 31/12/2019 06:57

I think it's just because I'm watching it closely and worrying about it. It's unlikely it has grown overnight but it seems that it has. If that makes sense

OP posts:
Bitofnamechanging · 31/12/2019 06:58

I just looked back at the picture I attached and that also has a lighter edge. I must just not have noticed that

How old is DC, I have had melanoma and watch marks etc like a hawk. I'd be going to doctors and if they don't refer you to dermatology going for a second opinion. Most times it is nothing but not worth the risk and even if benign can remove it.

Bitofnamechanging · 31/12/2019 10:55

He's two - three next week. It's flat but doesn't look like a freckle if that makes sense.

Bitofnamechanging · 31/12/2019 15:19

Just getting ready to go doctors. Really worried about looking crazy.

I've just spotted another one and I definitely think it looks worse now

She thinks just a freckle but we have to go back in a month

I don't want to be alarmest, but I'd be getting a secondary opinion. That mark in the last photo is exhibiting many of the warning signs:

Very dark
Not symmetrical
Multiple colours
Growing fast

On a fair skinned /hair child, I think this needs a proper examination by an expert.

Bitofnamechanging · 31/12/2019 17:02

She said come back in a month? She also said it's definitely not melanoma?

I have no idea what to do. I spend a lot of time hounding doctors about his health and feel like I'm going to get a reputation

What other health issues does the child have? There are some syndromes with a variety of issues.

Bitofnamechanging · 01/01/2020 15:02

Potential coeliac
Reflux (when on diary)
Balance issues
Mood swings
Tiredness
Poor vision in one eye. Both eyes squint
Weak neck muscles
Preschool say poor gross motor development
Hyperactivity (although improving)
Frequent urination and frequent accidents (preschool also concerned with this)
Speech ok but not brilliant
Regular infections which hit him badly
Poor growth (weight and height)

I think that's it Grin

OP posts:
Bitofnamechanging · 01/01/2020 15:02

DH thinks it's ataxia related to coeliac disease but who knows

@yellowallpaper sorry I forgot to tag you in my reply

OP posts:
yellowallpaper · 03/01/2020 10:02

@Bitofnamechanging. I think you must push for a second opinion and for genetic testing. It may be nothing at all or it may something like neurofibromatosis which can be very mild and have very little affect on a persons life, but it’s important for early treatment to get a diagnosis.

It may be nothing at all and coincidental but you need to trust your instinct to get some answers.

LatinforTelly · 03/01/2020 13:11

OP, what was his birth weight? With regard to his other health issues, not the mole? Where is he on the charts for weight and height now? What is his appetite/willingness to eat like?

I hope the mark turns out to be ok. Fwiw, I have some moles which tick all the boxes for dodgy ones and the gp has taken one look at them and said 'absolutely fine' Confused so I think possibly there are signs they look for that we aren't told about. Definitely keep an eye though and go back if it continues to change.

He's under the paediatrician for his gastric issues. Once we get him weighed and measured this month we will either have an immediate (ish) appointment or an appointment in three months time depending on his measurements.

I had a sickly pregnancy and he was born poorly. He was 6lb6oz, 25th centile. He had an infection and was in special care for 36 hours. Then he didnt really thrive. After a week we were home for 24 hours before being readmitted for another three weeks.

He did really well once we got his cmpa sorted and shot up to the 98th centile for height and 50th for weight. Since we weaned him he's steadily dropped centiles and is now bottom of the 25th for both weight and height.

I feel that he eats a lot. He's always grazing on toast, crackers, eggs, chicken, ham, peanut butter, fruit, cucumber, peppers the occasional biscuit or bag of pom bears but this is rare. We add extra good fats into his meals, give vitamins, probiotics, ensure a balance of food groups as far as possible considering he doesn't tolerate dairy very well and is gluten free.

MotorwayDiva · 04/01/2020 13:22

A gp cannot say it is or isn't melanoma, on that it does or doesn't look it. I wouldnt wait a month, and would be asking for a second opinion next week.
