Nits

Really not sure what to do with this. Nieces who live down south arrived at my DM today for the Christmas period, DS following in a few days. My youngest niece who is 14 has had head lice for literally months, I think it’s over 6 months. My DS says she’s treating it but they’re still there [confusedconfused. My issue is that my 5 years old DD has had them 3 times and they’ve always been caught from my niece, I’ve even had them. Niece has just called me to say she wants to come and stay at ours. I’ll be honest, I don’t want to have to deal with the dreaded nits, takes bloody ages to get rid of. Would it be really awful to make an excuse up?!

Why don’t you let her come and the second she walks through the door, blast her with hedrin? If it’s been months then it’s not being dealt with. Whenever I have had to treat my children the bloody things have gone!

Mintjulia · 19/12/2019 18:48

It would be a shame to miss out on family celebrations just over some nits.

How are they being treated?
Someone needs to sit every evening, saturate her hair with conditioner and then comb through, dumping any eggs and live lice into a disinfectant solution. She obviously isn’t doing it effectively herself.

But if you really can’t face it, I guess yes, you’ll have to make an excuse.

Mintjulia · 19/12/2019 18:49

Or as perid0t says

CaptainMyCaptain · 19/12/2019 18:52

I've just said the same thing on another thread about headlice but you have to treat the whole family ie parents, siblings, grandparents if they have close contact, otherwise they will keep passing them back and forth. Many adults don't believe they can get headlice themselves.

Drum2018 · 19/12/2019 18:53

Your sister is not treating properly if she's had them for 6 months. There is no way I'd have her stay over. Tough on the child but shame on her parents for being so bloody lax. Tell your sister it's not enough to slap on the lotion and hope for the best - which must be what she's doing if the child has had them all this time. I'd have no problem saying why your niece can't stay and I'd be ensuring my kids didn't have close contact with her either. Who the hell would risk getting an infestation into their house when they really don't have to.

Carty76 · 19/12/2019 18:54

My DH have just worked out that she’s had them for about 12 months. I’m pretty disgusted. I know if would be sad to miss out on family time over nits but over the time she’s had them not only had she passed them on to me and my DD but also to my DD’s friends. It’s just not fair on other people

Drum2018, you have just said pretty much word for word what I think

Drum2018 · 19/12/2019 18:58

To leave a child with nits is classed as unintentional neglect - tell your sister that! That child probably isn't sleeping properly, must be tormented with itching. No doubt she'll find that she's less likely to be invited to friends houses for sleep overs as they will all know she's infested. Your sister and her Dh/child's father need a kick up the arse.

Carty76 · 19/12/2019 19:00

Drum2018 Totally agreed!!! She didn’t even tell my Mum who’s house she’s staying in that she has them and hasn’t told me!!! So I’m guessing she’s been going here, there and everywhere spreading nits. That’s just wrong

We'd have referred to social services if a child had head lice for a year. Your concern shouldn't be whether or not she should stay at yours, it should be on that poor child.
How awful that she's had to endure head lice for a year.

Carty76 · 19/12/2019 19:11

Of course I’m concerned about her! She’s my niece! I’m just thinking of my own child.

Can your dm not treat the lice before before dn comes to stay with you?

TabbyMumz · 19/12/2019 19:52

She is obviously not following instructions right on the nit medication. Hedrin worked first time when we used it, then think you do a follow up the week later. After that I sprayed with tea tree oil daily and kept hair in plaits.

Perid0t · 21/12/2019 08:23

I don’t understand why you won’t just treat her yourself. A box of stuff is less than a tenner.

Carty76 · 21/12/2019 08:38

I have been. I’m going over twice a day to treat it and combing through.

OP posts:
TabbyMumz · 21/12/2019 08:51

Well theres something wrong with your method. Sounds like you are just using conditioner if you've been going twice a day to comb through. Get some Hedrin and put it all over her head and leave for the time on the instructions, then comb through as per the instructions. You dont do hedrin twice a day!? Once done, you dont need to do it again for a week I think. Then it's done.

Perid0t · 21/12/2019 09:08

You’ll be there forever using that method. Buy the stuff that actually kills the lice and eggs. If you miss just one egg when combing, you’re back to square one. Hedrin or nitwits are the best. One treatment and they’re all gone.

Carty76 · 21/12/2019 09:35

All of that has been done. Treatments, combing.

Perid0t · 21/12/2019 10:01

I bet she feels better already!

EvilPea · 21/12/2019 10:05

I know what everyone’s getting for Christmas In your house. Crown Wink

TabbyMumz · 21/12/2019 15:16

"All of that has been done. Treatments, combing."
You only need to use Hedrin once then they've gone. Who has used the Hedrin? You? Or has someone told you they have? Because if it's been used properly and the follow up done, she wouldnt have them.

Carty76 · 21/12/2019 16:29

I’m afraid Hedrin doesn’t work, we’ll it doesn’t work for me or anyone that I know. I’ve got professional advice now so it’s all hand in now. Thanks everyone

My son had nits for 7 years straight I just thought at some point they’ll leave or they’ll just eat him alive :) lol

TabbyMumz · 21/12/2019 20:51

7 years straight, oh my goodness, that is really bad, bet he kept reinfesting the whole school in that time! Couldnt you have given him a no 1 haircut and got them out!!

TabbyMumz · 21/12/2019 20:52

Hedrin worked for us and everyone we know.
