Nits

Really not sure what to do with this. Nieces who live down south arrived at my DM today for the Christmas period, DS following in a few days. My youngest niece who is 14 has had head lice for literally months, I think it’s over 6 months. My DS says she’s treating it but they’re still there [confusedconfused. My issue is that my 5 years old DD has had them 3 times and they’ve always been caught from my niece, I’ve even had them. Niece has just called me to say she wants to come and stay at ours. I’ll be honest, I don’t want to have to deal with the dreaded nits, takes bloody ages to get rid of. Would it be really awful to make an excuse up?!

Malt vinegar and hair straighteners have been the best nit treatment I’ve used!

"I’m afraid Hedrin doesn’t work, we’ll it doesn’t work for me or anyone that I know. I’ve got professional advice now so it’s all hand in now. Thanks everyone"

You've never used Hedrin have you? Someone has told you it doesnt work...which is simply not true, and noone has used it on the poor kid ..you've been told to comb it through with conditioner, and that isn't very effective, thats why she still has nits.

It's not necessarily that they're not treating.
Both my girls had a phase about that age where they seemed to be constantly with nits. I think for both that it was probably just being passed round the friendship group constantly.
Apparently nits is now more common at secondary than it was-they suspect due to selfies!

We'd do treatment, comb through, check the next days, none at all... and by Friday there'd be half a dozen big ones again.

We did all types of treatment. My preference is overnight Hedrin, but that's no good if they keep being reinfected.
Dd1 had thigh length thick hair at that point, so not totally surprised they could hide, but dd2 has short thin hair, and she had the same issues.
Cost me a fortune too Grin

Eventually someone said that there was a mouthwash-Listerine or something, that kills them off. Soak the hair in the Listerine, put it under a shower cap for 15 minutes, and it kills off the live ones. Then you can shampoo as normal. The dead lice float off the hair when you go under water. It's much less unpleasant than the nit treatment.
So we did that every day for ages. They passed it on to the rest of the friendship group too, and they all did it every day for a fortnight, and that cleared it.

You've got to do it twice, because it kills the lice, but not the eggs, and the eggs hatch a few days later, by doing it a second time, you get the lot. If you dont do it the second time, the eggs hatch and off it starts again.

Well, Hedrin does say that it kills eggs too, although I've never trusted to that.
However, unless these mutant ones hatched fully grown, then they were being reinfected. I might have missed some smaller ones, but not all of them.
They also take about 10 days after hatching to get to that size.
