DS (6) was sick once in the night then fine, no fever...back to normal. Would you send him into school or keep off for 48 hours?

OP posts:

LilyPinkNoah · 14/11/2019 07:35

Don't send him. If my child gets a sickness bug she really gets very very poorly with it and it takes days to recover.

Some kids are stronger - mine just isn't - I really hope you don't send him.

CookPassBabtridge · 14/11/2019 07:36

I always thought any type of sick was an automatic 48 hours off and followed this religiously while my lad was in reception. Then we got his attendance and it was 86% so had a meeting with school. I explained I was following THEIR rules. They said use common sense.. if a child is sick but has no symptoms of fever or temp and seem fine then bring them. Sometimes my kids have a coughing fit in the night and are just sick from that. Sometimes eating too much.

Flossie44 · 14/11/2019 07:37

Omg!! Noooooo!! The rules are there for a reason. Black and white. No discrepancies. I never get fiesty on here, but this topic brings it out of me!! My daughter in immune suppressed and could be seriously unwell if has a vomiting bug. Some people are just lucky in that the vomit once with a bug..so how can you be sure what caused it?!
Don’t be selfish on this one

8by8 · 14/11/2019 07:38

Nope. And I would judge anybody who did tbh. It’s just really selfish.

dementedpixie · 14/11/2019 07:38

I would keep them off today and then if there were no more episodes would send them back tomorrow

Etinox · 14/11/2019 07:39

Why was he sick? If he had a boiled egg and strawberry yogurt supper followed by a car journey or trampoline session, possibly. But ideally not, especially if it’s more likely to be a big.

thaegumathteth · 14/11/2019 07:39

No. Recently we all had a sickness bug. Dh and I had really bad diorrhea but no sickness, ds was sick once then fine just like your son but dd was sick at least 40 times over 2 days. What's nothing to your ds could make someone else very unwell.

APeakyBlinder · 14/11/2019 07:41

Definitely not!

Joerev · 14/11/2019 07:41

I would kee him off. I’m a parent and I’m having chemo. I don’t have ANY immune system right now

My daughter had a d and v bug yesterday

So no. Please please please don’t send him in. You could kill me for example if he was in the achool my daughter goes too.

Joerev · 14/11/2019 07:42

It’s all the people on here that say. Yes I’d send the in that boils my blood and spreads these sickness bugs!

Kids off sick. Wait 48 hrs. Even if they are only sick once!!!!

Joerev · 14/11/2019 07:45

@Flossie44. Same here. Sickness bug woukd kill me. I’m right at the worst bit of chemo. Whilst when I got to school I wear the masks and gloves. I try to get my dh to go. Or someone to pick up

It’s people who send their kids in. Grrrrrrr

LolaSmiles · 14/11/2019 07:46

If you are certain it isn't a bug (e.g travel sickness) then send them in. If in doubt, don't.
Why should staff and other students get ill?

thisthanthen · 14/11/2019 07:49

If he ate breakfast without cramps or sickness I’d probably send in. But then I have a child with a sensitive stomach, he throws up for anything from phlegm to too much sugar-he’d be off a serious amount of time. If he had a fever, threw up more than once, loose stools or had any prolonged cramps I’d presume a bug and keep him off.

FamilyOfAliens · 14/11/2019 07:51

They said use common sense.. if a child is sick but has no symptoms of fever or temp and seem fine then bring them.

Does this school genuinely have no sickness absence policy and is happy for parents, medically qualified or not, to err on the side of total disregard for the welfare of other children?

notthemum · 14/11/2019 07:55

Unfortunately rules are generally child has to be clear for 48 hours.
@Cupoteap
Ofsted rules are now 48 hours. I'd re check with your school.

Harriett123 · 14/11/2019 08:03

Your school website should have advice on this. My DSS is a similar age and his his no attendance for 24 hours after being sick

TigerBreadAddict · 14/11/2019 08:04

No I wouldn’t

sue51 · 14/11/2019 08:06

Keep him at home. These things spread like wildfire.

Sleepycat91 · 14/11/2019 08:06

My DS school is 48 hours, he had a bad belly once in the night, so i stayed home the next day with him, called him in sick, didnt tell them why, made sure it didnt happen again and sent him in the day after

Skinnychip · 14/11/2019 08:07

My DD was sick at school and I collected her. I kept her home the next day even though she seemed completely fine. The school called and asked why she wasn't in!! I said obviously because she was sick yesterday (I actually think it was a chemical smell in science that made her unwell) and they said they don't have ANY rule about absence after D and V .(previous school was 48 hours)

anothernamereally · 14/11/2019 08:10

No - bugs affect people differently, 1 person might be sick once while another sick all day and night, best not to pass it on

habipprtyh · 14/11/2019 08:12

Is he likely to mention he was sick?

What difference does that make Hmm

OP no, please keep him off, see how he goes today. Tummy bugs don't always come with a fever so that's not really a sign he is ok.

habipprtyh · 14/11/2019 08:14

I said obviously because she was sick yesterday

To be fair you are expected to call and let them know. It's not up to school to make assumptions.

I actually think it was a chemical smell in science that made her unwell) and they said they don't have ANY rule about absence after D and V .(previous school was 48 hours)

But the NHS states 48 hours, so it's basic really, irrespective of what school say, don't we follow NHS guidelines for most things?

Shakirasma · 14/11/2019 08:15

Please dont. Parents who do this are exactly the reason we get bugs spreading through school amongst pupils and staff.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 14/11/2019 08:19

Please don’t send him in, this exact thing ran through DDs school the other week and only 7 out of 26 kids missed out on it. The symptoms were a mild belly ache and hitch didn’t stop them eating or playing then that night, went to bed, woke up in the middle of the night, threw up once then back to sleep and felt fine the next day. Because some parents sent the kids in the rest of the class got it and they all ended up with it.
