My baby often does this *PIC ATTACHED*

I'm a first time mum here and have noticed my baby often holds up one of his fists and stares at it for a long time. He brings it close to his face and keeps it there and he doesn't seem aware that he has another hand, just the right one he focuses on. I've attached a pic.

He does it a lot and for a long time and I don't know if this is normal, is he just exploring his hands and becoming more aware at 3 months old?

I googled it (stupid I know) and articles that came up mentioned autism, so now I've freaked myself out. There is some history of autism on DS' father's side.

Anybody seen this before?

He usually holds his fist closer to his face, this is the only pic I could get of him doing it

Bless you OP, this is totally normal! Please don't worry about autism at this age. I say that as someone who over-analysed everything my dc1 did!

jonesyyy · 30/07/2019 16:12

@popehilarious thanks, I've been really worrying myself here 🙈

This is totally normal! He's just discovered his little hand. It's a very exciting time for him! Grin

Goodnightjude1 · 30/07/2019 16:13

I remember all of my DC doing this! They usually find a foot to grab on to next...all perfectly normal! X

flapjackfairy · 30/07/2019 16:13

All perfectly normal. He is working out that it is attached to him then he will discover the other one and begin to learn how to use them both together.

jonesyyy · 30/07/2019 16:14

@Aquamarine1029 he's obsessed at the moment! Often look at him in his noses basket and he's staring intently at his hand 😂

Just wait till he realises that his fingers can wriggle, or that he has 2 hands!

Esto · 30/07/2019 16:16

Bless you OP Grin I can recommend the Wonder weeks app which explains the stages and behaviours

shreddednips · 30/07/2019 16:17

Totally normal! I'm sure it said on the wonder weeks app I got that babies discover their own hands around this time. Around the same age, my DS would sit and examine his hand with a look of total fascination on his face for ages and ages.
I do understand the worry though, babies do all sorts of odd things that I suppose only make sense when you realise that absolutely everything is new and interesting for them. For example, mine went through a phase of shaking his head from side to side and laughing. Took him to the doctor in a total panic, but couldn't find anything wrong like an ear infection etc. He did it all the time for a few weeks and then stopped. I think he just liked feeling dizzy Grin

Fluandseptember · 30/07/2019 16:18

just wait till he discovers his FEET.

MacavityTheDentistsCat · 30/07/2019 16:22

And until he discovers his voice!! DD was astonished when she realised she could control her voice! She frightened herself to death with one loud shriek and burst into tears. Grin

lifeinthedeep · 30/07/2019 16:28

Autism isn’t generally diagnosable before the age of 2. Also, the absence of normal development is looked at rather than the presence of abnormal behaviour in such young children.

Don’t worry, he’s fine. It looks like he’s just fascinated by his arm.

CharDeeMacDennis · 30/07/2019 16:30

My son went through a phase of arching his body backwards every time he was picked up. You'd pick him up and he'd go banana-shaped. Perfectly calm and happy, just banana-ing. It did freak me out enough that I took him to the doctor Blush. She thought it was hilarious and said nothing seemed to be wrong, he must just like how it feels!

SinkGirl · 30/07/2019 16:33

Totally normal.

Both of my boys are autistic - they both do the hand thing but it’s nothing like this. It’s more like... Mariah Carey going for a big note and hand-emoting. Or vogueing.

They move their hands / fingers close to their face.

I really wouldn’t worry.

Namechange300 · 30/07/2019 16:35

Totally off topic but I really like your changing mat. Where’s it from?

InsertFunnyUsername · 30/07/2019 16:35

Aww its normal Smile

My DD did this a lot, with a face like > ShockShock

TheRedBarrows · 30/07/2019 16:38

That is so cute.

I want a baby again, now!

DontCallMeShitley · 30/07/2019 16:41

He looks a bit jaundiced OP, but has lovely pink cheeks.

jonesyyy · 30/07/2019 16:53

@DontCallMeShitley Do you think so? I haven't noticed that myself

foreverhanging · 30/07/2019 16:54

ooh he's cute

My dd is 2 and still obsessed with her hands

jonesyyy · 30/07/2019 16:54

@DontCallMeShitley Oh my god I totally forgot I'd put an emoji on his face!!! Good lord I'm so stupid 🤣🤣🤣

FrappeLatte · 30/07/2019 16:58

OP, I think DontCallMeShitley is joking Grin

All perfectly normal, don’t worry! I found this page very helpful... www.mumsnet.com/babies/child-development
