My newborns legs *PIC ATTACHED*

DPs mum keeps saying my 11 day old sons legs "don't look right" and now I'm really worried.

DPs brother has an extremely rare foot disorder so I think that's where the worry comes from.

Do they look normal to you?

Can’t see the second pic but my daughters feet were completely folded upward (top of foot next to shin) when she was born. I freaked out but was told it’s ok just where she was squashed in the womb. Anyway it soon sorted itself, she 6 now and has normal feet.
If you are worried mention it to your health visitor.

livinglavidavillanelle · 10/05/2019 20:49

Okay, just seen the updated pic. I'm pretty sure it's not talipes. Tell the fam to bog off and leave you and your baby in peace. Congrats by the way, those little feet are adorable!

SparrowBo · 10/05/2019 20:50

I think it looks fine. My ovaries twanged at how beautiful and newborny his legs look.

I bet he also smells divine. Congratulations on his arrival. They do change a lot.

Whereistheglove · 10/05/2019 20:52

Can see all the pics now. Can you do what a pp said and post a pic of both legs together

fudesina · 10/05/2019 20:53

Is it just one leg you are worried about?

If you look at you discharge papers from the hospital it will have notes regarding the neonatal check findings. Sometimes they write 'positional talapies' but the foot has good movement so no action is required.

You'll be allocated a HV in the next few days and they can check if you mention it. It's all about the range of movement though

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 10/05/2019 20:53

I worked in NICU (about a million years ago) - not a podiatrist or specialist though.

That looks like it's correctable when you stretch his foot, which is reassuring. He's possibly got curly toes, which all the best people do (fact).

Agree, it's worth getting it checked for reassurance, but, I'd bet you the glass of wine I'm about to pour that he's just not quite unscrunched yet.

I can tell from the pics that he is beautiful. Congrats.

limpingparrot · 10/05/2019 20:53

If it is positional talipes, which my 2 week old son has, picked up in the hospital before we were discharged, just doing the exercises we were shown (mostly tickling his feet when he has his nappy changed !) has already made a huge difference. So I wouldn’t worry if I was you.

Buddyelf · 10/05/2019 20:54

My first DD had legs like that. We used to say she looked like a little chicken. Skinny little legs and her foot was turned in on one of them.
HV checked and said as long as the foot will move if you move it to the correct position if shouldn’t be a problem. We could move her foot so it looked ‘normal’ and eventually she just straightened out. However if you’re concerned bring it up with the HV or GP and see what they say.

Cherylshaw · 10/05/2019 20:54

I don't think it looks like nothing but little newborn legs, they just need to fill out.
I think it's one of those things where you look at something so much it begins to look wrong iykwim.
Do you have a drop in clinic you could pop into just to put your mind at ease? Your baby has been seen by doctors before he left hospital and then by midwife I think they would have spotted something if something were there.

timeisnotaline · 10/05/2019 20:55

I wouldn’t assume the health visitor would know. I would take them to the gp, as others say they don’t mind checking teeny babies! It’s probably nothing but I would never assume it must have been picked up at newborn checks the way they run maternity wards for post natal.

AwdBovril · 10/05/2019 20:56

My DD had talipes, I agree your DS does not look the same.

While your MIL might have her own personal reasons for worrying, she's not achieving anything by keeping pushing you about it. You already have an appointment to have him checked, presumably you will mention the family history - at present nothing more is possible or necessary. Your MIL needs to keep a lid on it, frankly. Her continuing comments are doing nothing more than unnecessarily worrying you. Get your DP to tell her to back off. Screen her calls if necessary, if you believe she'll mention it.

Twisique · 10/05/2019 20:57

I heard recently that babies change a lot over the first two weeks! He probably just needs more time to uncurl. He has lovely new baby legs.

MotherOfDragonite · 10/05/2019 20:58

Ahhh, he's lovely -- congratulations! I feel broody just looking at those cute baby feet.

My toddler came out with feet bent inwards like that. She loved sleeping in a kind of froggy position. I think it's pretty normal, because of how they've been curled up in the womb, and certainly she walks perfectly normally now.

BertieBotts · 10/05/2019 20:59

Don't panic. Remember your hormones/protective instincts are likely to be dialled up to about eleventysix right now so it will feel worse/more urgent than it is. Pics don't seem to be uploading, that seems to happen sometimes, but anyway it won't make any difference. Posters here can't tell you yes or no anyway. But as it's a rare disorder, the chances are your DS doesn't have it. As there is family history his chances are probably slightly higher than normal, but it's still not a huge chance - it might not even be genetic, it could be random. If there was a high chance of passing it on, it would be a common disorder.

Have you been discharged from midwife care? Usually if you don't have a health visitor yet, it means you have not been. So phone back labour ward, unless you've been given a different number - the number to call should be on your discharge notes. You can do it now if you're really worrying about it, save you panicking all weekend. Otherwise, phone on Monday morning. Midwives know the way that worry sticks in your mind and bothers you when you've just had a baby, and they should be able to put your mind at rest.

If it was not specifically mentioned to you on discharge, they probably haven't looked because they haven't had that specific disorder in mind during normal checks, if it is rare, but they would have looked for other common issues, and they obviously haven't seen signs of those. So it probably would be beneficial to have a specific look for whatever the markers are of that disorder. Not because it's very likely that he has it, but because if he does early intervention will help, and if he does not, your mind will be put at rest and you can stop worrying about it.

Soubriquet · 10/05/2019 20:59

Ah...that new picture does look a little odd

I would call the health visitor and get an appointment

Mabellavender · 10/05/2019 21:00

Honestly op I don't know what it is but something looks not quite right to me, I would get him checked over by a doctor.

Fraxion · 10/05/2019 21:00

He's possibly got curly toes, which all the best people do (fact).

I have a curly toe, the one next to my little toe and my daughter has it too.

Congrats OP. Ignore the know it alls and get reassurance from your health visitor.

AuditAngel · 10/05/2019 21:01

It could be mild talipes. When I had DD1 she was checked and declared fine.

A much older midwife said he feet weren’t quite straight and that they would be fine if we did som3 physio.

Each time I fed her I had to stroke the outside of her ankle, onto the outside of her foot, she would react by pressing back against it, stretching it.

She now has a European bronze medal for karate in her age group

Soubriquet · 10/05/2019 21:02

The photos for you OP

Mabellavender · 10/05/2019 21:02

It might just be that he’s skinny and he’s been curled up a long time. My babies were all quite chubby from birth so their legs didn’t look like that but maybe I just have fat babies lol. Get him checked to put your mind at rest.

Soubriquet · 10/05/2019 21:02

Ok...they did show up in preview Confused

Justaboy · 10/05/2019 21:02

OP, simple! get him to a GP or other medical pro then you will find out if there is a real problem or not, if there is a problem then it will get put right if not then just enjoy the litttle man!

Studentnurse1981 · 10/05/2019 21:04

Take those shorts off

Studentnurse1981 · 10/05/2019 21:05

His legs look fine op. I worked on mat unit for 10 years and too me they look normal but please if you are concerned get him to a gp asap.

youarenotkiddingme · 10/05/2019 21:05

If you can straighten out then it's likely positional but I agree with others to get it checked if your concerned.

But yes his left foot does looked turned in
