My newborns legs *PIC ATTACHED*

DPs mum keeps saying my 11 day old sons legs "don't look right" and now I'm really worried.

DPs brother has an extremely rare foot disorder so I think that's where the worry comes from.

Do they look normal to you?

Was this brought up antenatally? If so, it's highly likely that it was checked for at birth. If not, or if you're not sure whether it was I would just call back to labour ward. Explain you've been discharged but MIL has thrown up concern about a family history of a rare disorder and ask if you can have an appointment to see the paediatrician as an outpatient. It's the kind of thing that they would have looked at as part of the newborn examination if it had been flagged up, so this is likely all you need to do.

If labour ward can't help then you would need to make an appointment with the GP and ask for the same thing - outpatient appointment with neonatal paediatrician for examination WRT due to family history. If you don't want to make an appointment, you could mention it at your six week check up. It's quite likely that it would be fine to wait until then.

Asking medically untrained strangers on the internet to look at a newborn's legs and say whether they look "normal" will not tell you whether or not he has a rare disorder, especially as most of us have probably never heard of it and wouldn't know how to recognise it - but a neonatal paediatrician probably can - it's their job :) If the disorder has been passed on then it would be best to have this flagged ASAP so you can get any needed support (physio, exercises etc), and if it hasn't, you'll be reassured and won't have to worry about it any more. Otherwise, you will probably find you'll become obsessed with his feet/legs and be worried about it all of the time.

Agree with pp re positional talipes. Both my babies had them, sorted themselves out with no physio though both had scans to check hips. Try to ignore your DPs mother and listen to your HV Flowers

Whisky2014 · 10/05/2019 20:20

No cant see new photo

Gunpowder · 10/05/2019 20:24

I can’t see either because of the baggy shorts, but having had two worries about my newborn twins (one which turned out to be founded and the other completely irrational) I would make an appointment with your GP and get them to do a check. I don’t think they would ever mind checking a newborn baby. I wish I’d gone when mine were 10 days old instead of worrying until the 8 week check and then I had a six week referral wait and so forth. Congratulations OP! I bet he’s gorgeous and if he does need help better to know now, if he doesn’t your mind will be at rest.

Shixtyshixpershent · 10/05/2019 20:25

Looks like my daughters when she was born. It was as pp have said positional talipes. We were referred to physio for some exercises and a hip scan as well which came back clear. She’s now 11 months old and her feet are fine. She’s been walking around for over a month. She does have one slightly bowed leg but gp said that should straighten out as she grows.

incogneto · 10/05/2019 20:25

For some background I am very small and DS came out curled up, he was in the fetal position for quite some time after birth as he was born at 38 weeks. I knew this was normal but DPs mum kept making an issue of it.

I now have DS in a baby grow and his legs are straight, he's just in a bit of an awkward position atm so I don't know if I can get a pic.

I will ask the HV when I get one or take him to the GP when he gets registered.

I'm quite worried now. We don't think it's what DPs brother has, it's extremely rare and his feet don't look anything like his at birth.

I'm quite sure the newborn assessor would have picked it up

Can’t see new photo but I can see why your mil is concerned. This may be how her ds foot condition presented .
The only thing you can do is seek medical advice. Try not to worry

TickleMyTitsTilFriday · 10/05/2019 20:31

I think newborns do come out a bit crumpled. Once they've had a stretch out they start to straighten up

ATowelAndAPotato · 10/05/2019 20:32

I can't see the later photo, but I wouldn't worry too much if the usual assessment was done and nothing was mentioned. The newborn assessor we had was very thorough. She referred my DC for a hip scan as she was concerned about limited movement/mobility (not sure what the right term is). She said it was very minor but wanted to be on the safe side - all ok as it turns out.

luckyrabbits · 10/05/2019 20:34

My baby had overlapping toes, one on each foot. One sorted itself out the other didn't but it hasn't caused her any issues. Just keep checking in with the Health Visitors when you get him weighed. Congratulations by the way!

PrimrosePhantasm · 10/05/2019 20:37

Op my dds legs looked so turned it for weeks after she was born and I was very worried. But it turned out there was nothing at all wrong and she’d just been very scrunched up. she is now a healthy, active 9 year old.

incogneto · 10/05/2019 20:37

New pic. It looks bad to be honest

OP posts:
PrimrosePhantasm · 10/05/2019 20:39

I also think that your mil is being swayed by her own experiences, it must have been hard on her at the time and she’s bound to be over the top with her worrying sometimes.

Justaboy · 10/05/2019 20:39

The real issue here is which team is he supporting with those shorts?, can we have a rear view please;?

Also the legs, please just get to see a qualified medical professional who can examine him properly, its no good trying to diagnose this type of problem on the web!

So 'err what team is the little footballer to be going to play for then;?

Bless him:-)

PrimrosePhantasm · 10/05/2019 20:39

I can’t see the pic op

quizqueen · 10/05/2019 20:41

My grandson's foot was like that and my daughter was told to massage it outwards regularly several times a day. It's fine now. It should have been noticed, to be honest, by your midwife.

incogneto · 10/05/2019 20:42

Not sure why people can't see pics I'm posting. I'm worried now that something is wrong and I don't see how it could be missed before being discharged at the hospital

Noloudnoises · 10/05/2019 20:44

Take a picture with bare legs, no big clothes, both of them and upload. I think we need to see both together. They could just be skinny newborn legs!
What was the rare condition the brother had?

incogneto · 10/05/2019 20:45

I've uploaded a pic to Imgur for anyone who can't see the pics I've posted here

TokyoSushi · 10/05/2019 20:46

I see all the pictures, I'd say it probably does need a quick once over by the GP or midwife just to double check

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 10/05/2019 20:46

Your DP's mother is not a medical professional and frankly she should have more sense than to keep making comments like this to a new mum when you have already arrangement an appointment to get it looked at. Ask you partner to tell her very politely to shut up. In the meantime, plenty of people have said that if something was wrong it would have been noticed in the initial check up. So please please try not to worry and wait for the appointment. Wishing you all the best.

Possibly talipes, but it's hard to tell from that pic. You'll have a health visitor by the day after tomorrow (they are commissioned to see you between day 10-14 in most areas) so they will be able to reassure you.

incogneto · 10/05/2019 20:47

I think it's because he was 2 weeks early and did come out quite scrunched up. His legs are quite thin also.

She's now telling me about potential operations he might need to have Confused
