Chicken pox

DS (4) has been off for couple of days, but whiney and not himself. Tonight in the bath I notice a couple of spots and his temp was a bit high. He's asleep now but is this chicken pox? They do look blister like but he only has 2 or 3. Is this possible?

When mine had it they were popping out all over the place, it seemed as if I looked away more would appear, but some people only get a few.

Roselinemac · 11/04/2019 21:50

Yes I thought that would happen, I've been checking him every 10 mins but just the same ones are there. 1 on his back, his temple and 3 on tummy. All very small but look like little blister spots. So I'm not sure if it could be another sort of virus.

Managed to get a photo whilst he's sleeping.

We have it here too. Came in to this board to see if I could find any tips.

DS 5 has been hit hard, he was up vomiting most of last night and had a sore throat.

Tiny blisters appeared everywhere today.

DS4 will probably get it too.

Phillipa12 · 12/04/2019 20:32

Ds2 and ds3 have just had chicken pox. Ds2 had about 20 spots, ds3 was covered. Randomly though he only had 4 spots for 36 hours till the rest came out. Highly recommend virasoothe.

Tinks15 · 12/04/2019 20:40

We’ve been using Poxclin mousse, that’s been very good! Alternating between bathing in oats or head & shoulders shampoo!

Roselinemac · 12/04/2019 21:41

Ohh Tinks he is really covered, hope he's feeling ok. I ended up ringing 111 as DS temp went over 40 😳 even after calpol. But by the time they rang me back nearly 3 herd after his temp came back down. It's still up there but not as high. He's eating and drinking as normal so that's good. Was told absolutely NO Ibruprofen as it makes the spots worse and they get infected. He's not really complaining of itching yet just a little bit so I have calamine at the ready. The bath OST's is a good idea. Hope all your little ones are feeling ok x

There's a lot of chicken pox around atm. There is a gel you can get from the chemist that works like magic getting rid of the itch. My ddil got it for my dgs when he had CP a couple of weeks ago.

Tinks15 · 12/04/2019 22:11

Oh god that’s so scary when their temp rises like that. I hope things are starting to ease for you now Rose. I hope we turn a corner soon it’s been horrendous few days, 4hrs sleep in 2 days - I’m starting to crumble now Sad. I just feel so sorry for her, especially with her being so small & not being able to tell us what’s bothering her etc.

Roselinemac · 12/04/2019 22:21

How long does the fever and the worst bit last for?

DS has just had some calpol so waiting for temp to come back down. It's going to be a long night. Sorry Tinks I just presumed baby was ds. Hope she's feeling better soon, it really is draining when they are that age and unable to tell you.

I found day 3 & 4 was worse for us, that’s when she just couldn’t even sleep, constantly crying & her temperature was high a few times but Calpol quickly bought it back to normal.

I remember with my older DD a few weeks back she improved a little on day 5, we are day 6 today & we’ve just managed a 4hr chunk of sleep (on me) which she hasn’t done the last few days so hopefully the pox have started to ease for her now & will start scabbing over. She’s got some big juicy ones it’s horrible!

How’s your night Rose ? Hope you’ve have managed to get some sleep.

LucyBabs · 13/04/2019 03:14

Oh I remember this so well! Not fondly obviously!
Dd was 3, she was covered in the spots. She had them on her vulva, she was so sore for weeks :-(
Ds then got them he was only 5 months old. He had one spot on his head for days and then he developed at least 50! Its bloody awful. I've found head lice are the only thing that's worse haha

Roselinemac · 13/04/2019 14:28

Well we've hardly slept, ds very itchy and complained of headache. Temp getting really high again but brought down with calpol although taking its time. His eyes are all bloodshot but apart from that he's playing and drinking loads, eating what he wants but very little. Poor little thing ☹️

WingBingo · 13/04/2019 15:37

DS has a rash over most of his body. He’s so poorly.

I’ve just got some virasoothe which was recommended and it has really helped with the itching.

CP can do one. Who sets out to deliberately get it, it’s proper horrid.

Roselinemac · 13/04/2019 16:19

Ahh Wing hope he's better soon, we are same here and I agree CP sucks!! It's nasty and I can't believe people have pox parties so there little ones can catch this dreadful virus. Feel so helpless watching ds itch and cry and burn up 😩 hate it xxx

It’s the silent tears that have me in bits rose.

Petitprince · 13/04/2019 16:53

If you have children who haven't had it, you can vaccinate them for it at superdrug travel clinics for about £100.

Roselinemac · 13/04/2019 17:20

Petit I privately paid for ds to be vaccinated against meningitis as I know it's far more serious. You don't realise how terrible Chicken Pox really is or at least I forgot as dd had it 12 years ago.

OP posts:
Petitprince · 13/04/2019 17:34

Very wise - not before time the meningitis jab is now free for little ones. I realise it's not much help to post once your child already has chicken pox - it was just for people whose children haven't had it yet. You have my sympathies.

WingBingo · 13/04/2019 17:37

Yes I wish we had vaccinated now.

Roselinemac · 13/04/2019 17:40

If I'd of known the chicken pox was only £100 I would of paid for it rather than see my son in so much agony so yes your post is very useful for those whose child hasn't had it.

The meningitis vaccine was £300 but worth it for the peace of mind.

Roomba · 13/04/2019 17:59

I booked DS2 in for the vaccination when he was 5 and still hadn't had it, but he broke out in the spots a few days before! od's law. Luckily he had it very mildly. Poxclyn was wonderful stuff, plus piriton. DS1 got it at 13m old and it was awful.

Does chickenpox become more common this time of year due to weather/temp or something? Because DS2 had it just this time last year, there were loads of cases locally, and DS1 had it same time of year too.
