My little boy is 9 months old. He was on Amoxicillin for tonsillitis last week.
On Sunday night he was very upset. Cried and screamed a lot. Monday morning i noticed he was covered head to toe in rash/spots.
I took him to the dr who wasn’t sure. He said that he didn’t think it was an antibiotic rash and thought it was highy likey to be chickenpox. I also wondered this although thought the sudden on set was unusual compared to how it happened with my daughter.
The next morning the spots are less and it’s more rash like and spread.
He is absolutley covered, poor thing. But otherwise he is well. Temp is 36.1-36.5.
No dr appts left today when i phoned this morning. The pharmacist wasn’t sure but didn’t really have a look at him.

That looks nothing at all like chickenpox.

DevonCustard90 · 27/11/2018 11:30

I agree! This morning i straight away said ‘thats not chickenpox!’ i just have no idea what it is.

Could that be measles? Looks like the measles rash...

Nousernameforme · 27/11/2018 11:34

Does it blanch if you press it? If not get to a&e immediately.
That said it does look like the measles rash. Phone doctors back and say you think it's measles can they squeeze you in? Or get a call back. If not I would phone 111 for advice unless you have a walk in near you.

DevonCustard90 · 27/11/2018 11:35

I wondered about measles but because he’s no other symptoms i’m not sure. I’m going to take him back to dr tomorrow.

When did he start the antibiotics? I’m wondering if it’s an allergy to the amoxicillin. Is he up to date with his vaccinations?

DevonCustard90 · 27/11/2018 11:38

This was the 1st thing i did this morning when i saw ithad changed. On his arms, legs etc it goes away under glass but not so much on tummy only slightly.
I’ll give drs a phone again and say about measles.

That’s how I looked when I had what nobody diagnosed until 2 weeks after the rash had appeared as measles.... also started with a sore throat/ tonsillitis like symptoms

DevonCustard90 · 27/11/2018 11:39

He started them last monday and finished this morning. Dr said it dodn’t look like that 🤷🏻‍♀️

Have you tried an antihistamine (there are baby suitable ones) - could it be hives? If sudden it's possible.

Bacardi101 · 27/11/2018 11:43

I would go to the docs now to be honest it looks really nasty. :-(

shallichangemyname · 27/11/2018 11:44

DD had meningitis and came out in a rash like that, I think it was the antibiotics. The drs didn't really know but all they could say was it was different to the meningitis "rash" (which isn't actually a rash at all, but bleeding under the skin).

DevonCustard90 · 27/11/2018 12:07

No, i’ll get some to try.

DevonCustard90 · 27/11/2018 12:07

Did she have any of the other symptoms?

OP posts:
shecamefromgreece · 27/11/2018 12:21

I think that's a reaction to the amoxicillin. Give me a mo and I will post a picture of my son when he had a reaction.

DevonCustard90 · 27/11/2018 12:32

Thank you. Phoned dr again and was told an appt tomorrow afternoon or phone 1st thing tomorrow 🤦🏻‍♀️

OP posts:
shecamefromgreece · 27/11/2018 12:33

This is him just after being admitted it actually got worse as they didn't realise it was an allergic reaction and gave him more amoxicillin. He swelled up after the second lot.

Nousernameforme · 27/11/2018 12:53

Phone doc again please and ask to speak to a doctor over the phone quickly before their lunch break.
If you do this then the doctor who spoke to you is responsible for the dc's care. If anything awful happened doc would be looked at as last contact with a hcp. As your dc is so small and rash is a tricky thing to diagnose over the phone they will want them in person to see them just to cover their own backs.

Cheekysquirrel · 27/11/2018 13:12

I think it looks like hives so an allergy rash. I’ve been covered like that when I’ve eaten things I’ve been allergic to. I would think measles would present with high temp etc too.
Seems a coincidence that he’s developed it after taking the antibiotics. I wouldn’t be happy with leaving it though, just in case. Push to get him seen. Am amazed they won’t given his age and symptoms.

Cheekysquirrel · 27/11/2018 13:13

My friend’s daughter had a similar - but less angry looking - rash about a week after having amoxicillin.

Nogodsnomasters · 28/11/2018 00:14

I agree with pp's it looks like measles or a bad allergic reaction.

ShovingLeopard · 28/11/2018 00:21

Am absolutely amazed they didn't give a same day appointment to such a young child with those symptoms. How is he now, OP?

sazzle27 · 28/11/2018 00:45

Has he been vaccinated against things like measles?

Lineofbeauty · 28/11/2018 00:49

He is too young to have had the MMR in the UK.

It looks like the classic amoxicillin rash to me but I am not a doctor. I'd be quite worried about a GP who thought that was cpox... nothing like. There are no papules - it's a flat rash.

SeaToSki · 28/11/2018 00:52

Looks like a scarlet fever rash to me. Bacterial tonsilitis gone crazy. If it is, he needs another course of different antibiotics, not amoxicillin again. Its probably a bacteria the amoxicillin doesnt work against. Dont leave it, go back to the gp tomorrow, there are lifetime side effects from not treating scarlet fever
