My ds2 seems to constantly battling nappy rash, just when it seems to have healed it flares up again we are super vigilant with nappy changes as he’s quite routine with his poos he’s literally in a soiled nappy for seconds but it’s almost like he’s allergic to it. A few weeks ago he had hfm which really flared up around his already sore little bum, took him to see the gp and other then confirming what we knew already nothing was recommended. Iv tried suda crem and bepanthen and now onto metanium, which seemed to do the trick until today and now I’m back to square one I feel so sorry for him. Is there anything I’m not doing that’s worth a go? Tia

I find that a thin layer of yellow metanium, let it absorb for a 30 seconds then a thick layer of bepanthen over the top does it after a few days. Also lots of towels down and let them have nappy free time as much as possible. Plain water in the bath, no bath products and clean with cotton wool and water. Don't know if this will help you but it's what I do.

IwillrunIwillfly · 22/11/2018 19:38

Could it be the wipes you're using to clean him? Maybe try using cotton wool and water for a while and see if that helps? While he's in the house as much happy off time to let it air too. Hopefully it clears up soon!

Anti fungal cream for as long as it says then that same again. Long term nappy rash is nearly always fungal.

This is my specialist subject.

Chottie · 22/11/2018 19:41

Zinc and castor oil cream from Boots.

Mumof4under10 · 22/11/2018 19:44

Agree with PP. I swear by zinc and castor oil. Also the cotton wool and warm water instead of wipes.

Need2morehands · 22/11/2018 19:45

Would caneston cream work? The nappy rash seemed to flair up after we switched to normal wipes, we were using water wipes so we’ve switched back again now. He seems to be having much looser poos now too. Ds1 never had any nappy rash so it’s all new to me, I’m up for trying to no nappy thing for a while too just wish it was summer and he could go outside.

Use hydromol in the bath.
Cotton wool and water to clean bum, dry using a clean towel facecloth, layer of bepanthen, also see if changing nappy brand works but give each brand a good week.

I suspect that water wipes set off my little boy's rash.

Need2morehands · 22/11/2018 19:46

I will put zinc and castor oil on the shopping list too. Thank you

I would say try anti fungal cream too. That was the only thing that worked for my DDs persistent nappy rash.

BrokenLink · 22/11/2018 19:48

Nappy rash that does not clear up is often thrush. You can buy clotrimazole (Canestan) or miconazole (Daktarin) cream over the counter.

Datedandold · 22/11/2018 19:50

Dry his bottom with a hairdryer on cool at each nappy change before putting the cream on- it’s worked every time for me.

gamerchick · 22/11/2018 19:50

Have you tried different brand of nappies. My youngest was horribly allergic to pampers.

RandomMess · 22/11/2018 19:50

Has the GP done a swab to rule out strep A?

The best product I ever found (4 DC) is Sprilon spray that is designed to protect bed sores from contamination. It's such a light coating yet completely impervious to bodily fluids plus you clean with water let skin air dry them spray on

  • no aggravating it by touching it rubbing in cream.
KingIrving · 22/11/2018 19:50

Don't use wipes. Cotton and a bowl of warm water to clean most of poo, than carry to sink and wash with a gentle sensitive soap (I know it is a pain as you then have to clean sink).

Egg white creates a second skin

Fettuccinecarbonara · 22/11/2018 19:52

Yellow metanium is amazing

Atalune · 22/11/2018 19:52

Naked bottom time as much as poss.

Thin thin layer of metanium on a dry bottom, the. A thick layer of sudocream on top.

Clean bottom with warm water and a soft flannel.

Tea tree oil in his bath.

Need2morehands · 22/11/2018 19:53

No gp said it was (at the time) hfm and nappy rash but didn’t suggest anything. Everything including the nappy rash cleared up over a week ago but yesterday it flared up again usually a plain bath and some metanium and it’s calmed right down but it’s just got worse today.

I can recommend a cream called drapolene. Available in most independent pharmacies

ChristmasAccountant · 22/11/2018 19:56

Anti fungal cream and a very low dose hydrocortisone was the only thing that worked for my DS2. Went on and on for months but this eventually stopped it (prescribed by GP obviously!)

starlight45 · 22/11/2018 19:57

GMtobe, I was coming on to write Metanium.

immummynoiam · 22/11/2018 19:58

Thought about putting him to bed without a nappy? You can get disposable bed sheets. It worked for my dd, she had horrible bleeding nappy rash and they get a lot of air to the area overnight. Was recommended on nhs website as the area needs nappy free time as well as the creams etc.

Catpyjama · 22/11/2018 19:59

My sympathies it's horrible. No wipes, just cotton wool and water, but make sure the area is totally dry afterwards. Bare bum as much as possible-we just turn our DC (8 months) loose on hard floors and clean up messes. Daktacort is brilliant if l it is fungal but I think we overused it and it ended up making the skin more sensitive-it does contain steroids so don't use for longer than recommended (think I'm disagreeing with a pp there)

Catpyjama · 22/11/2018 20:01

What am I on about not steroids, hydrocortisone! I think if you're looking at prolonged use it should be overseen by a GP, is all.

SinkGirl · 22/11/2018 20:03

Have you considered an allergy? Whenever my twins have dairy or soy, they develop bleeding nappy rash, like the poo has burned them. No rash at all since we cut them out, except when they’ve had something by accident.
