Threadworms...HELP

SweetMummy911 · 17/11/2018 19:09

On Thursday night my son started complaining of a sore bottom upon checking him I saw one tiny threadworm and PANIC started! Husband bought Ovex from Asda and quickly gave a dose to everyone. That was Thursday at 6pm.... fast forward 48h and they are getting worse. My daughter has passed dead ones in her stool - I have passed dead ones and just found a live one after going to the loo. My son is so bad - live worms in his poo and bottom every time we check him (2-3 hours) he's been crying in discomfort for 2 nights straight...

We been following a stricter hygene plan but to be honest I clean my bathroom daily and change the kids pjs daily too.

My question is : is it normal after 48h for them to still be alive? How long does it take for them to stop showing up?

I'm quite an anxious person but this has been destroying me and I can't sleep or eat Sad

They live in the bedding... Hot wash needed. Towels as well.

SweetMummy911 · 17/11/2018 19:11

@mummmy2017 thanks for your reply - since Thursday I've been washing towels and bedding everytime they are used ... very tiresome but it's been done!

You need to hit wash all underwear (and pyjamas) too, not just those that have just been worn. It's worth hot washing all towels and bedding in the house. And keeping finger nails short and clean.

It can take a few days after taking over for all the worms to die, and the dead ones may well be seen coming out when using the loo.

SweetMummy911 · 17/11/2018 19:53

Thanks @Doofas we have been doing exactly that - put everything in bin bags to stop surface cross contamination so it's straight from bag to washing machine on a hot wash and drying in tumblr dryer on highest possible setting!

Do you think it's normal for live ones to still be visible in bums 48h after ovex? We've been advised to carry out tape test to make sure that it is threadworms so starting to freak out

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 17/11/2018 19:58

Ovex doesn't work instantly. Have found this online:

How long after taking Ovex should threadworms disappear?

The main ingredient in threadworm medication includingOvexis Mebendazole, which works by preventing the worms from being able to absorb the sugars (glucose) that keep them alive. With their energy stores cut off, it could take them a few days to die. This is why immediate elimination of worms is impossible and you may still notice the worms and itching after taking the treatment.

SweetMummy911 · 17/11/2018 20:13

Thanks @dementedpixie that's helpful - I've been on the phone with nhs 111 and they've advised to take a 2nd dose of Ovex and perform tape test..... just can't stand to see him like that!

OP posts:
mummmy2017 · 17/11/2018 20:17

Think they breed on your bum.. You itch it goes in your mouth...
So put nappy cream on his bum...

SweetMummy911 · 18/11/2018 18:18

@mummmy2017 @Doofas @dementedpixie day 3 after first dose of Ovex... still infested by them everytime he goes to the toilet they are everywhere not just when he has a BM. They are still live and wriggling - starting to get really concerned as he's supposed to go to school tomorrow but don't feel he should

OP posts:
Doofas · 18/11/2018 19:58

If 111 is suggesting a second rise that may be worth trying. Don't forget to regularly hoover/steam mop floors. You can still send him to school, about 40% of children have worms at any one time. You can put coconut oil or Vaseline around the anus at nighttime and clean it in the morning to help get rid of eggs.

SweetMummy911 · 18/11/2018 20:05

We are using metanium at night to help the itching and it seems to be soothing him

gamerchick · 18/11/2018 20:10

The meds work by starving them to death. Just give another dose.

I wish they would bring back the good stuff. It was royally vile but really did the trick.

gamerchick · 18/11/2018 20:11

I also gave everyone suffering at night a packet of babywipes and a bag. Itching starts, get babywipes to remove the glue that causes the itching and put in the bag.

SweetMummy911 · 18/11/2018 20:42

Thanks @gamerchick sounds like you experienced it too... may I ask how long it took for the little buggers to clear off? As I said we are 3 days and 2 doses of Ovex and still finding live worms .... Blush

namechange9080 · 19/11/2018 08:13

@SweetMummy911 don't send him to school!

dementedpixie · 19/11/2018 08:15

Why shouldn't he go to school? There is no exclusion period for worms and he probably caught them there

gamerchick · 19/11/2018 08:43

Thanks @gamerchick sounds like you experienced it too... may I ask how long it took for the little buggers to clear off? As I said we are 3 days and 2 doses of Ovex and still finding live worms

Well it takes as long as it takes. Just make sure a second dose 2 weeks later is done.

If you keep up the scrupulous hygiene, damp dust everywhere. Every door handle, light switch, remote control etc then they only have a life cycle of about 6 weeks anyway. Just dump everyone in the shower as soon as they get up to wash away any new eggs.

Yes I know them. 3 kids in, little fuckers. I'd rather have headlice in the house.

SweetMummy911 · 19/11/2018 10:16

@namechange9080 he stayed off school last Friday and today not because he has too but out of personal choice as he feels a bit self conscious and just waiting for them to calm down a little. I think I'll send him in tomorrow. I've informed the school and they'll be sending out a letter to every year today.

@gamerchick thanks for getting back to me. We are 4 days in and still find the little nuisance - going to see nurse this afternoon to put mind at rest

My MIL told me she had them when she was pregnant and it took just over 2 weeks to clear without any medication so I'm guessing I should give it a least a week before I start to see some improvement with Ovex?!

OP posts:
gamerchick · 19/11/2018 10:32

You've all had 2 doses, I'd be very surprised if they didn't clear up soon. Definitely speak to the nurse for reassurance though.

This was the stuff from my childhood. Paralyses the buggers and give you explosive trotts to eject them from the bowel. Awful to take but effective.

Cant get it now though.

SweetMummy911 · 19/11/2018 10:43

Thanks @gamerchick that's exactly what I'm thinking they should start to improve but everytime I check they are there!

I've heard of prispen I think you can still have it on prescription depending on how severe the case is... will see what the nurse says but I'm a bit concerned that we are not seeing improvements yet

OP posts:
Lushmetender · 19/11/2018 11:06

Try Vaseline / gives relief but worms stick to it!

dementedpixie · 19/11/2018 11:17

Pripsen was discontinued so you can't get it now. It's ovex or nothing!

SweetMummy911 · 19/11/2018 11:22

Thanks @Lushmetender for the tip will try - been using coconut oil and metanium but Vaseline I'll give it a try.

Thanks for all your replies - hoping in a week's time this will be all a distant memory

ipdipskyblue · 22/11/2018 18:21

How's it going OP, have they disappeared yet? We have a similar situation here currently, so interested to know.

SweetMummy911 · 22/11/2018 18:40

@ipdipskyblue sorry to hear you have the unwanted visitors. My GP sent us for tape test at the hospital on Monday as after 2 doses of Ovex and over 4 days they were still very much there. Results came back positive for threadworm and advised to keep up stricter hygene regime for 6 weeks and repeat course of Ovex another 2 times spacing them by 10 days!

Today (day 7) it's the first day that they seem to be dead and not wriggling out of bottoms anymore... sorry for TMI!!!! Fingers crossed we are over the worst of it now ConfusedThanks

@SweetMummy911
We're almost 2 months in and have been taking medicine too.
Any updates of how long it all took? And did you continue with the medicine until it all went away? x
