Lump on baby's spine

PinkLillies18 · 05/11/2018 18:59

DS is coming up to 4 months old in the month. After 4 weeks of being born he developed a lump in the middle of his back which feels it's just off his spine.
I was the size of a 5p then swelled to a 50p coin size, it's not red or any colour. It has since stayed the same size but it now hard. He isn't in pain from it or when it's touched it doesn't seem to be sensitive.
He went to see a doctor at the local hospital who booked him for an ultrasound.
The lady who was doing the scan had to call her 'head of team' in to look but they both said they haven't seen one like it. From what I know the report came back inconclusive.
He was referred to a consultant who then booked him for an MRI.
2 days later I had a call from my hospital saying he's being referred to Great Ormond Street hospital where they will want to see him within 3 days time and will discuss his case with me.
I'm just confused as to whether I should be worried for it to get sent to them. Nothing was disclosed over the phone from the local hospital other than the fact he's had to be referred.
Has anyone had any similar situations or have any advice?

Hey, thanks for all the messages, he's had the biopsy and all went well. We are back home and waiting for results next weekend. So not too long of a wait xx

Hoping for good news op, everything crossed for you.

PinkLillies18 · 25/11/2018 17:34

His results/appointment follow up is in 2 weeks time. Is this a normal wait time for biopsy results? Or could this mean it's not urgent to have the follow up sooner? (Not cancerous) xx

In my experience, any tests results indicating cancer (or even the possibility of) are followed up with an immediate phone call and appointment within a day or so. Not in two weeks time.

redsummershoes · 25/11/2018 17:50

yes, in caseof cancer you should receive a call+ appointment very soon.
if not they will discuss at the scheduled appointment.

some things take long to grow in the lab, tb cultures take 4-6 weeks, but most other things come back quicker.

PinkLillies18 · 25/11/2018 18:24

@DeezMutts he had it done on Wednesday, if it was bad would I of had a phone call yet or is it too soon for doctors to of got a result back?

OP posts:
redsummershoes · 25/11/2018 18:37

yes probably.
cancer cells = the sample is dyed and the cells looked at under a microscope. this happens quickly and many cancer cells are very visible.
other growth, like infections, take longer to establish. samples are smeared onto a medium and left to see what's growing.

DeezMutts · 25/11/2018 20:30

Well I assumed from your post that you expected a call this weekend regarding the biopsy results and instead you’ve had a call making an appointment for two weeks time, so presumably they’ve had the results? Sorry if I’ve misunderstood.

bobstersmum · 26/11/2018 16:55

I don't know how you're coping op! It's cruel to keep you waiting this long, I'd have thought someone could have filled you in one way or another. Hope you hear soon.

ILovePierceBrosnan · 26/11/2018 17:01

My experiences have always been that you hear quickly if it is cancer. I think they are generally very poor at recognising that “not cancer” is also urgent because the family will be going spare.

PinkLillies18 · 26/11/2018 17:24

I phoned up the hospital and spoke to one of the doctors to see if they would ring if it's bad and results are back, he said regardless of the result they will only disclose them in our follow up appointment

Two weeks is over the 10 day threshold so I would guess it's clear. But I would like to know sooner. They can't give "good" results out over the phone and not "bad" ones otherwise you can tell by asking them, hence them not committing themselves.

Because they deal with it all the time, they can get a bit blasé about it. One letter I had about ds had "a not significant risk of

PinkLillies18 · 29/11/2018 14:14

His lump has gotten significantly bigger not sure if waiting is the best thing. I called for advice and they said he could go to a&e. It's not infected just growing.

That's not good op hope you get some answers asap and hope it's positive news.

Wildboar · 29/11/2018 16:39

Have you phoned the team at GOSH?

PinkLillies18 · 29/11/2018 16:53

Spoke to his doctor at GOSH over the phone, the cells are not cancerous and he will have it removed before they can even change. I'm so relieved and happy, thanks for all messages and support xx
