Lump on baby's spine

PinkLillies18 · 05/11/2018 18:59

DS is coming up to 4 months old in the month. After 4 weeks of being born he developed a lump in the middle of his back which feels it's just off his spine.
I was the size of a 5p then swelled to a 50p coin size, it's not red or any colour. It has since stayed the same size but it now hard. He isn't in pain from it or when it's touched it doesn't seem to be sensitive.
He went to see a doctor at the local hospital who booked him for an ultrasound.
The lady who was doing the scan had to call her 'head of team' in to look but they both said they haven't seen one like it. From what I know the report came back inconclusive.
He was referred to a consultant who then booked him for an MRI.
2 days later I had a call from my hospital saying he's being referred to Great Ormond Street hospital where they will want to see him within 3 days time and will discuss his case with me.
I'm just confused as to whether I should be worried for it to get sent to them. Nothing was disclosed over the phone from the local hospital other than the fact he's had to be referred.
Has anyone had any similar situations or have any advice?

I'm thinking of you today @PinkLillies18 xx

PinkLillies18 · 09/11/2018 14:36

It's not a fatty lump or a cyst. So he is now being re-booked for a biopsy and will be coming back hopefully sometime next week.

PinkLillies, this is exactly our experience. I can link my thread if you like? Did they tell you anything else about the lump?

The biopsy was conclusive in our case. I assume he will have a general anaesthetic?

How are you feeling?

dontknowwhattodo80 · 09/11/2018 15:11

Ah @PinkLillies18 Sad

PinkLillies18 · 09/11/2018 15:12

Yes please, send me the link and I'll have a read.
They said on the mri and ultrasound images he's never seen one like it so he can't give us any ideas as to whether he thinks it could be cancerous. Not sure whether they say 'they don't know' to save the panic until they are 100% sure.
We're staying positive but can't help thinking the worse. All part of being a mum I suppose.

Oh you poor thing. Hopefully next week will bring you some answers and you can go from there. Thinking of you Flowers

LoniceraJaponica · 09/11/2018 15:22

I hope they manage to rule out anything sinister. We have been through the mill somewhat with DD, but she is fine now Flowers

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 09/11/2018 15:26

Sorry to hear you're still waiting for answers, OP. When they say they don't know it almost certainly means they just don't know - it's not shorthand for bad news.

Hope you and your family are holding up ok - these things are so stressful.

GinandGingerBeer · 09/11/2018 17:36

Thinking of you Thanks
One day at a time, try your best to look after yourself.

woolduvet · 09/11/2018 17:44

I'm sorry you didn't get great news today, doesn't mean you won't get good news next time.
Try to to dwell and plan great stuff to keep you busy

Wildboar · 09/11/2018 17:45

Thinking of you. It must be hard to wait.

Witchend · 09/11/2018 20:05

Hope for good news soon.

My experience is if they think it's likely to be cancerous then they will talk to you about it.
"Don't know" is just that. If they thought it was likely then it can be "don't know, but looks likely..."

ShowOfHands · 09/11/2018 20:31

I don't know definitely means I don't know. They will be honest.

ILovePierceBrosnan · 09/11/2018 20:41

Oh how worrying OP. I hope you get some answers soon. I would find it impossible to not google but try and avoid too much

BarbarianMum · 09/11/2018 21:38

Agree with pp. Theyve seen plenty of cancer so if they suspected that's what it was, they'd tell you and he'd be having the biopsy today. "Don't know" means exactly that. Fingers crossed for you. Flowers

Rachie1986 · 09/11/2018 21:44

Sorry you haven't had any answers yet OP. Sounds like they are on the ball and getting it sorted though. Thinking of you xx

beggingbehind · 09/11/2018 22:06

ShowOfHands i remember posting on your thread a year ago so glad your DC was okay.
OP I wish you all the best, its always worring when its your own DCs. Even though it seems like evreythings going 100 miles an hour, just think its better that on the small chance it is anything sinister its caught quickly and if its not its dealt with quickly and the process isnt to drawn out. Thats probably no help! All of my children have been in hospital for something or another so i do undertand and am holding your hand through all of this Flowers

GoldenMcOldie · 13/11/2018 10:19

How are you OP?

PinkLillies18 · 13/11/2018 10:33

Just nervous waiting for biopsy date. Want to get it all done and over with now x

Sending you a virtual hand hold @PinkLillies18 xx

Watchingthetelly · 13/11/2018 10:41

Hi OP. We've unfortunately had a lot of experience with GOSH and they are really excellent, total professionals and so kind. You couldn't be getting this checked at a better place. They act super swiftly with anything that concerns them so it's hopefully a good sign that they didn't just book you in for a biopsy there and then. Fingers crossed for you and baba xxx
