Is this a boil?

This is on my daughters eyelid. It started thurs/Friday as a red spot.

Should I take her to GP? NHS website says I should but I'm not even sure if it is a boil or just a giant pimple!

Is this a boil?

Poor soul. Just to say that my dh had something similar that turned out to be ocular cellulitis, which is v serious. If it looks like the swollen area is spreading do go straight back. Hopefully the antibiotics will soon have her on the mend though.

purpleshimmer · 07/08/2018 20:39

Update:
She woke this morning and her eye was that swollen she could hardly open it.

Phone call to GP resulted in referral to children's ward at hospital. Then over to eye clinic. They have given extra strong antibiotics and want me to go back tomorrow with her so specialist can decide whether to lance it or not.

She has been diagnosed with Preseptal Cellulitis with a Sebaceous cyst on top. It is now huge and turning purple.

She's ok in herself though but a bit off it now and then and feeling sickly.

Hospital for 6 hours and back tomorrow...soooo tired!!

Goodness. Poor dd.
Hope goes down or gets sorted by specialist today...

TwoGinScentedTears · 08/08/2018 07:43

Gosh, your poor dd. Hope today brings some relief.

purpleshimmer · 08/08/2018 08:05

This was last night. No improvement this morning and eye almost closer again.

My poor baby.

So glad I didn't leave it as it can be very serious. Let's see what the dr says today. I think they will have to pop it Sad

OP posts:
bluerunningshoes · 08/08/2018 08:11

tbh, popping it will be a relief for dd.
the procedure is unpleasant but quick and with the right wound care scarring will be minimal.
you might want to get her some cool 100% uv protection sunglasses.

IggyAce · 08/08/2018 08:12

Aww @purpleshimmer that looks really painful. I hope they are able to do something today.

Justgettothepoint · 08/08/2018 08:45

Looks painful OP. Insist on an appt today. Ask to speak to practice manager if you don't get one. Then as someone suggested sunglasses. Mention that to GP infront of yr ds incase she doesn't like wearing them. Hope it gets sorted soon.

MrsEricBana · 08/08/2018 14:45

Poor thing. I did think cellulitis. When dh had it it did take a good while to clear up and needed a couple of courses of antibiotics. Hope it's calming down a bit now.

purpleshimmer · 08/08/2018 14:51

Well we've been back to eye clinic today...the specialist said he wanted to operate on it tomorrow, he said she must be put to sleep and marked it as urgent.
But then when they tried to arrange it turned out there is no slot in theatre! So he said she can't have anything done unless it becomes an acute case..so basically lack of resources mean that she has to continue in discomfort and we have to take the risk of it getting worse.
Safe to say I am extremely frustrated by this!!

She is so uncomfortable and if the infection spreads deeper it can be very serious. The dr even agreed the cyst has grown aswell so clearly the new antibiotics aren't doing much either. It's ridiculous.

They want me to take her back again tomorrow to check on it. It's clear they are just edging their bets.

Also, the hospital is over 10 miles away. I do not drive. It is 2 buses there and 2 buses back. A taxi is £14.

I'm single and on long term ESA benefits...all this travelling is tough and tiring and I can't afford it either.

Just wish they would sort it out. Sad

OP posts:
SillySallySingsSongs · 08/08/2018 14:55

Aww bless her. Hope she feels better soon.

An unmumsnetty hug for you too.

DinkyDaisy · 08/08/2018 16:10

How frustrating and really not on at all.
Have you been told what to do if it pops or gets significantly worse before tomorrow?
Fingers crossed antibiotics do have positive impact....

purpleshimmer · 08/08/2018 18:02

They just said to go to a&e if she gets really ill (fever etc) and to just keep the wound clean if it pops.

Obv to carry on with the new antibiotics but she's had 4 doses now and I swear it's just getting bigger!

Will add a pic to update.

She's off her food and grumpy, mentioned blurriness and dizziness too but think she is just generally fed up.

We've given it a name though..

bluerunningshoes · 08/08/2018 18:04

blurriness and dizziness and no appetite doesn't sound good tbh.

I hope she feels better soon!

purpleshimmer · 08/08/2018 18:06

Left side this morning...right side just now

MrsEricBana · 08/08/2018 21:55

Hmmm, this isn't great is it. I think keep an eye on her/it regularly in the night and go back first thing. The bus thing is a pain but needs must. The thing about cellulitis on the eye is that the eye is near the brain so you don't want infection spreading there. If it's worse tomorrow don't leave the hospital till they sort it. What a brave girl she is Flowers

Justgettothepoint · 09/08/2018 00:00

It looks like it's getting ready to pop to me OP. Do you not have anyone in rl that could give you a lift to the hospital?

Sofabitch · 09/08/2018 00:05

Travel to hospital gets refunded of you're on Esa.

There should be a finance office In the hospital

purpleshimmer · 09/08/2018 01:24

We've just had another trip to a&e tonight. The dizziness got much worse, causing her to fall over. She went pale as a ghost and her temperature went low (35.3)...she just looked so ill and I was worried.
Called 111 and they sent a taxi.
Dr called the eye people and pushed the issue saying that the antibiotics clearly aren't working.

He reassured me she does not have any kind of sepsis BUT he said the infection is worse and not better and I must "stamp my feet" at clinic tomorrow and make sure it gets treated.

He advised her to fast so she would be ready for the anaesthetic.
So we're back at 8.15am.

I shall be making a big fuss if I have to but not convinced anything will happen...they seemed adamant yesterday that they wouldn't operate on her unless it was considered sight or life threatening! (after saying they needed to do it urgently but then realised surgeon was on holiday ffs)

But why wait till it gets to that stage? Surely a quick straight forward procedure would be better for everyone concerned!?

Sorry but I'm getting really annoyed now.

Thanks for the support everyone. It's good to vent lol

3boys3dogshelp · 09/08/2018 01:54

You should be getting annoyed and you shouldn’t feel you have to apologise! Your poor dd, that looks so painful. Google nhs sepsis signs - low temp, pale skin, nausea or vomiting, dizziness are ALL on there. Please keep a close eye on her tonight and go back again if you have to. If she is no better tomorrow and the surgeon (only 1 surgeon??) isn’t available then perhaps they need to consider sending you to another hospital who can help. I would be going with an overnight bag packed and refusing to leave until she is feeling better to be honest, there is nothing more you can do at home and the treatment she is having is not effective.

delphguelph · 09/08/2018 02:33

Utterly ridiculous. Another shit show.

Go tomorrow and stamp your feet as the docs says. Your poor DD!

MrsEricBana · 09/08/2018 08:40

Morning OP. Hope you're there and your lovely dd is getting sorted now. Hang in there, you're doing really well.

purpleshimmer · 09/08/2018 17:30

Thank you MrsEricBana and everyone else, your kind words are very much appreciated.

Gonna write this update/vent..well done if you make it to the end!

Got there today and dd been nil by mouth as per instructions of dr last night. The thing on her eye was bigger than ever (photo)...the consultant saw us in the corridor and asked how she was.

I explained about last night and what was said. She agreed that it looked much bigger than yesterday.

Then she examined it properly in her office and told me that there is no pus point on the cyst (but she says there was yesterday, and the yellow part has not changed so I've no idea what she means)..therefore surgery would be unhelpful as she would need a big incision and the whole sac digging out and no guarantee it would not come back.

She then said it will probably still need an op but to wait for the inflammation to go down first so they can see what they are dealing with.

It is all the complete opposite to what they said before and a cop out purely because the paediatric surgeon is on holiday. It's so bleeding obvious!!

I asked her about the eye disease that this one leads to...(she has what they call “pre septal” but if untreated or antibiotics don't work then it progresses to “orbital”; this can cause blindness, brain abscess and sepsis and is a medical emergency)

The original child doctor on the ward and the a&e doctor last night both said they should treat her to prevent this from happening (it is standard procedure to treat the pre septal stage ASAP to avoid the second stage...which is most common in young children and particularly girls apparently) because if it develops to orbital then it’s IV drip of antibiotics and it's quite serious.

To me, the consultant decision to let the situation continue seems like an awfully big risk to take with my dd health because all signs are pointing to the fact that the first line of oral antibiotics are simply NOT working.

The cyst or whatever is causing the cellulitis and the cellulitis needs to be halted.

Her response to my fears was: "well if that happens it happens”
I was fuming!!
Also "what do you want me to do? She’s already got antibiotics".

She then asked me to continue to use warm compresses as it may pop (despite saying 5 mins earlier the pus spot had gone and it was all turning solid..again contradicting herself)
She also advised to watch for it coming bigger and to return to clinic if I was concerned.
I argued that it is bigger and that she had already agreed this in the corridor...and I am concerned and I am back at clinic but nothing is being done!?

Then after telling her about dd dizziness etc last night she said
"well don’t children often fall over anyway” and shrugged her shoulders.
Followed by "what else do you want me to do? I’ve told you I’m here and to come back if you’re worried”.

She was really unhelpful, argumentative and quite intimidating tbh.

I went to the desk and asked who or where it is I go to to organise a formal complaint. I told them
I was really not happy about how I had just been spoken to and how my dd had been cared for this past few days

The receptionist looked for a PALs leaflet whilst a nurse who overheard me butted in and offered to go and get the clinic's sister in charge.

I spoke with the sister and made it clear how I felt and told her everything that had happened. She went and spoke with the consultant and came back to say that she can't go above her decision not to operate...I said I totally understand that but I'm still not happy with the way I was spoken to but most of all the way in which the story keeps changing. The care has been totally inconsistent and unfair on my dd. The other drs said it needed incision and were happy to go ahead but since the theatre slot problem it appears to be a fob off tactic and it's simply not fair.

My dd is so uncomfortable and even if the cyst thing is hardening well I'm sorry but it shouldn't have been left to harden should it...this could have all been resolved so easily the other day.

She was very sympathetic but clearly powerless to go above the consultant.

So I then went over to the PALs office in the main building. There is a note on the door apologising that it is closed and to ring or email instead.

What a complete shit show.

I know we are very lucky to have the NHS and I know how much strain they are under but when it comes to your own child it's so frustrating and soul destroying...I absolutely cannot do anything else.

So now we have 2 options:

  1. It will get better; the antibiotics will work (despite being used for 48 hours with no improvement thus far)
  2. It will get so bad that she will need emergency care, her eye will close up and she will need admission and IV drip and whatever else.

I'm praying it's going to be no.1

Dd is so tired out, she's currently asleep on the sofa which she NEVER does.
And as an aside...the cyst thing is looking very yellow now..so my guess is if she had been put to day surgery it would have been able to be popped easily anyway and all this "no pus point" shit was just a fob off.

Thank you for reading. I know I might sound like it's an overreaction, I don't know, I'm not one to complain usually, can anyone recommend anything else I can do/people I can contact?

Thank you Thanks

how to complain about the NHS.

Ask PALS for a copy of the hospital's complaints procedure. Be very clear what you are complaining about, ie a) lack of resources to operate b) conflicting advice and information c) not caring. (this is my guess, correct it as you will, but it works best if you have a clear and concise set of issues rather than just telling your story)
