Dermoid

I suspect my daughter has a dermoid after discovering a lump on the bridge of her nose. We've been referred to a Alder Hey for further investigation but am tying myself up in knots worrying about her having an operation on her face. Has anyone else been through this and come through the other side?

I was born with a dermoid 44 years ago. It was removed when I was 6 (privately and at my mother's insistence as very few surgeons wanted to do plastic surgery before the age of 14). I know I have a deviated septum but I've had no problems at all (except having to be careful while playing hockey as the bridge of my nose is a little weak!). Bear in mind that mine was removed in the 70s and I'm sure things have moved on a lot since then!!!!

How old is your DD? My DS had this as a baby, his was on the side of his eyebrow. He had a small op when he was 10 months old, he's now nearly 15 and has a tiny tiny scar. It will be fine, try not to worry.

Old thread that I posted in with our experience here:

Thanks all, she's 19 months now and we've just been referred to a plastic surgeon at Alder Hey could be months before we're seen though Sad

Hello. I've literally just been googling and joined mumsnet on the strength of your post! My daughter is five and a half and is awaiting an appointment at Alder hey for a nasal dermoid too. She had mri and ct scans a few months ago but we don't see Dr til December now, so I have no idea what will happen next and I too am getting anxious about it all.
I hope you see my message!!xx

FlenChap · 06/12/2018 19:00

Hi I'm so sorry I've only just seen your message from October. We haven't had the surgery yet but expect to in Feb or March 2019.

I'm quite a bit more relaxed about it now as our daughter's is so central on the bridge of her nose they say it's too risky to leave it in case it bursts as it would have a path back to her brain.

Obviously I'd rather she didn't have to go under the knife but Mr Fattah does pit you at ease as it's clearly minor surgery for him xx

Hello! We went for Grace's appointment at Alder hey a couple of weeks ago and she'll be having the op next year, waiting for a date. They'll have to go in from outside so she will have a scar down the middle of her nose but tbh it's quite large, swollen and red at the moment anyway, I'm sure it is worse than when we first went.
She's aware she'll need it removing ,so I've just got to get her thro it now (and me 😥)
Hope all goes well for you. Xx
We're not under that Dr, can't remember now! Xx

Mr David Richardson !

MrsBungle · 21/12/2018 07:15

My son had quite a big dermoid cyst removed from between his eye and nose when he was about 2. The surgeon cut along the crease of his eyelid and took it out that way in a day procedure. He was home by tea time and fine.

He’s never had any further problems and you need to really look for the scar as it is within the crease of his eyelid so not noticeable.

FlenChap · 05/01/2019 05:41

Thanks for keeping in touch, we're still waiting for a date but know we'll have a central scar too. My daughter has fair skin and strawberry blonde hair so we've been warned the scar will be prominent for a few years but I'm hopeful it will fade before she becomes conscious of it 🤞🏻

I've been warned about future keloid scarring too but will worry about that if the time comes!

We've got our date, she has the op in 10 days, fingers crossed

Rg78cumbria · 27/01/2019 23:08

Oh wow, yes fingers crossed it goes ahead as scheduled xx
How long have you had your appointment? Still waiting for a date and keep thinking it may be ages off
Xx

FlenChap · 28/01/2019 10:31

We only received the letter on Friday so we've had barely two weeks notice, I was told earlier that they try to give you a month's notice.

Rg78cumbria · 28/01/2019 11:17

Omg I can't believe that! I kept thinking it would be ages off. I've enquired since our appointment and they've not been able to give me even a vague idea.
I'll be checking for the post every day now!! I don't think we were far behind you. Scans were June, consultant December
Xx
Good luck!xxx

Rg78cumbria · 28/01/2019 11:25

I'm wondering if it's different depending on the surgeon.
Plus Grace was already on the books at Alder Hey (despite us being in South Cumbria) because as a baby she had a large hemangioma (strawberry birthmark) on her face - across nose bridge and under left eye. It was treated with beta blocker medication and it worked wonders. But is also why I didn't notice the dermoid for so long as I thought it was left over scarring.
And now she has to go thro this too!
Xx
I'll post some pics at some point. There's a dermoid Facebook group which is quite helpful. I feel v lucky Grace doesn't seem to have any intracranial extension as is a much bigger op by the sound of it
X

Rg78cumbria · 28/01/2019 11:36

So pic..
Day she was born, 5 weeks later, improvement with medication and now
Little bump was probably always there but disguised. She has slight puffiness and red veiny area on that side too

FlenChap · 28/01/2019 18:12

Gosh you have all been through the mill haven't you she looks lovely and I'm sure she'll take the dermoid in her stride too. We has our scans in August and saw the consultant then too as there was a cancellation, I think we should've seen him in November so you never know it could be any day for you too. I'll post some pics when it's all over with 🤞

Thank you xx

Rg78cumbria · 05/02/2019 21:29

Good luck this week xx

FlenChap · 06/02/2019 07:22

Thanks, she goes in tomorrow. Was touch and go as typically she had a nasty virus last week and we nearly postponed! X

We're through the other side! Thursday was a very long day as we were the last surgery of the morning but it went well. The major issue has been stopping her playing with the wound - the surgical glue didn't last even until we got back home so we had to go back for steri strips on Friday but it's healing well now. Xx

Aw wow! Well done to you both! I've been wondering how you got on. No dressing then? It looks quite neat xx

FlenChap · 11/02/2019 10:47

It is pretty neat and really should have a dressing but she keeps picking it off, we've bought scratch sleeves for overnight but are trying to let the air get to it a bit in the day as steri strips are barely lasting 2 hours at the moment🐒 Here it is today

Aww bless, it looks pretty good already! Don't know how I missed your second picture sorry! Hope all is going well. Still waiting here xxx

FlenChap · 04/03/2019 20:36

How frustrating for you, it can't be long now. Ours is healing well and has lost most of its angry redness now but we've gone through a lot of steristrips trying to keep her from scratching it. We're back for our check up at alder hey next week and for future care advice so hoping to get some feedback from the main man on how he thinks it's healing 🤞
