Temp not coming down

Fuckoffunicorn · 31/03/2018 10:46

My nearly 3 year old got a temp last night which went up to 39.2. Ibuprofen brought it back down but it’s gone back up twice since and this morning was at 40. Calpol has only brought it down to 39.

I’m not sure whether to call the Doctor because, although she is clearly ill with cold symptoms, she seems alright in herself. Very tired and just watching TV but she’s chatting fine etc. Drinking water but not really eating

Any advice?

So how often are you giving medication and how much? The fact it is bringing it down at all is good. The height of the temperature isn’t worrying. They are self-limiting and convulsions occur due to a sudden rise, not the actual height of the fever.

Fuckoffunicorn · 31/03/2018 10:55

She had nurofen at 21:15 last night and 4:30am then calpol at 9:30 this morning

Is it still on it’s way down with the calpol? You can give another dose of Ibuprofen now if you need to. I probably wouldn’t try and see a dr today if she is settled and drinking but it’s difficult because of it being Easter. Personally I would just watch and wait but your child, your decision

Slartybartfast · 31/03/2018 11:04

keep her cool, with lukewarm water. if she seems fine that is good, not too listless. the fever is fighting whatever it is meant to be fighting.

Ohforfoxsakereturns · 31/03/2018 11:11

I’d keep a close eye on her for 12/24 hours and if the temperature is still high, i’d Call out of hours or go to the walk in.

I’m a bit more cautious these days after DD had a high temp for two days and nothing I tried was bringing it down. I took her to the hospital in the end which was the right thing to do (turned out it was a uti).

applesandpears56 · 31/03/2018 11:58

Sounds like tonsillitis if she isn’t eating? Or an ear infection?
Give neurofen and calpol alternating at the times you can
Personally I’d book an out of hours appointment for today so you can get it looked at before Easter and check it’s not her throat, ears etc
High high temp might mean it’s bacterial and need antibiotics

applesandpears56 · 31/03/2018 11:59

Oh for Fox - a uti can be diagnosed at an out of hours - you don’t need a and e for that

incywincybitofa · 31/03/2018 12:17

DS had similar and it was a UTI which shouldn't be waited out, the thing is at such a young age they can seem fairly robust and keep going with symptoms which would floor an older person.
Tonsillitis is possible can you look into her mouth with a phone torch?
Ear infection
I am guessing if you gave Calpol at 4:30 she woke up.
I would call OOH.

Fuckoffunicorn · 31/03/2018 13:17

I phoned 111 and they said not to see a doctor if she didn’t seem very ill. If she’s had temp for 3 days or gets other symptoms to phone back. She had some toast to eat

Three days seems a bit long. I’d give it 48 hours personally.

How is she now?

Fuckoffunicorn · 31/03/2018 18:41

She’s still got a temp of nearly 39 but has just eaten dinner and is now colouring!

shewolfmum · 31/03/2018 23:56

I would let temp do it's thing...body is doing what it needs to.

Fuckoffunicorn · 01/04/2018 12:02

She’s much better today. Eaten two breakfasts and gone to the park. Not on her own

I can remember son at 3 having the same thing. I spoke to a nurse who told me that high temps should break on the 4th day - which is exactly what happened. They told me to keep him coolish but not to strip him off and to just carry on as normal, ie take him outside etc.

Fuckoffunicorn · 01/04/2018 22:31

It’s back up over 39 again....

Ohforfoxsakereturns · 02/04/2018 10:54

Sounds like she’s ok in herself though?
Does she still have a temp this morning?

Devastatedupset · 02/04/2018 19:08

You need to give calpol every 4 hours and ibuprofen every 6 hours, this should control her temp, if not I’d go to GP.

Fuckoffunicorn · 02/04/2018 19:09

Thanks all it’s not gone above 38 today and no meds since last night so she seems to be on the mend

shewolfmum · 03/04/2018 00:05

It isn't advised to give meds to reduce fever devast...hope she is feeling better?any other symptoms?

Fuckoffunicorn · 03/04/2018 09:33

surely that is a way of reducing fever? @shewolfmum

Slartybartfast · 03/04/2018 10:50

www.nhs.uk/conditions/fever-in-children/

shewolfmum · 03/04/2018 22:34

Yes give meds if in distress/pain but guidelines are not to reduce a fever. It has a job to do. There is a link to nice guidelines on fever if you google it. Number not important it is how child is.

Luckymummy22 · 04/04/2018 11:46

111 do advise that you do not need to reduce a fever if child is distressed.

Although last time I got told off for not reducing fever when at ooh’s..........

But I do determine whether to treat or not depending on how child is acting.

Luckymummy22 · 04/04/2018 11:47

Should say do not need to reduce fever if child is not distressed
