Temp not coming down

Fuckoffunicorn · 31/03/2018 10:46

My nearly 3 year old got a temp last night which went up to 39.2. Ibuprofen brought it back down but it’s gone back up twice since and this morning was at 40. Calpol has only brought it down to 39.

I’m not sure whether to call the Doctor because, although she is clearly ill with cold symptoms, she seems alright in herself. Very tired and just watching TV but she’s chatting fine etc. Drinking water but not really eating

Any advice?

I agree - if fever is causing child to breathe fast, be lethargic, have high hr, fits then fever should be reduced. I do think the nice guidance should distinguish this.

Yes and doctors should follow the nice guidelines. Often they just want to make life easier for parents i guess and people seem to struggle with letting the body be hot and doing it's thing. My theory....and it is just that...a theory...is that medicating a fever drives the illness in to the body. Letting it do it's job keeps more serious complications at bay.

Eh? You’re not supposed to reduce a fever?? Eh? So we leave children and babies in pain with a fever that can quickly turn into something much more serious?

Guidelines change all the time. Don’t know how any of us aged 15 and over ever survived in life.

A fever itself is self limiting and doesn’t need to be treated. The pain and physical discomfort associated with a fever are the things that need to be treated. That includes things like a fast heart rate and breathing rate.

If my child is showing signs of pain and distressed then I will give pain relief, Fever or not.

If they are running around like an idiot with a high fever which is often the case then I won’t give pain relief.

If they have a high fever and go for a nap then I will leave her and monitor them.

They don’t always need pain relief and I judge by how the child is although I will continue to monitor the temperature
