Bottom pain/ proctalgia?

plum100 · 24/01/2018 22:01

Hi everyone, my daughter has been suffering with what i call shooty bum pain for years. Mainly at night and she describes it as if someone is getting a big prickle and sticking it up her bum, sometimes her front bits too.
This can keep her awake at night and often wake her. We've seen a consultant who did bloods and a scan of her stomach and all was well , so there seemed little
Point going back to see him but we are again having another episode now and I'm just at my wits end .
Before I ramble on has anyone else experienced anything similar? My daughter was so upset tonight saying how she wishes she was someone else and how she hates going to sleep as she knows the pain will come. She's 10.
Any info / advice will be so welcome, thank you .

I appreciate this is a rare subject I will
Continue to check this every day in the hope that someone will have searched for the same thing needing help

Does the pain only occur at night? If so, could it be threadworms?

plum100 · 03/02/2018 22:15

Thanks you def not threadworms happens during the day at school
Sometimes too

I was going to say threadworms too. You can by a family pack from the pharmacy, you have to dose everyone. Buy two packs and do another dose severals weeks apart to break the cycle. Nails cut short, scrub under nails when hand washing, fastidious cleaning and washing bedlinen and underwear on hot wash.

123bananas · 03/02/2018 22:17

If bad infestation can happen in day too with threadworms, so worth dosing anyway just in case.

plum100 · 03/02/2018 22:18

We've seen the gp
And been under consultatant at hospital - treated for worms
Many times just in case. But it seems to be a shooting stabbing pain I have seen posts on the internet about it but nothing recent - thank you for taking the time to reply xxxx

I'm assuming she's not constipated? The only time I've experienced this is when constipated....

More water and trying to get her to poo before bedtime?

Isadora2007 · 03/02/2018 22:25

How many years? Some endometriosis pain can be stabby bum pain. Or “fanny daggers” even...
I’m not sure a child could have this? But I guess if it started around 8 it could be associated with puberty/pre puberty?

Haven’t done a google search for endometriosis + child...

plum100 · 03/02/2018 22:26

No, been on movicol
To see if that helps but no help. It's a painful shooting pain, but seems to be harmless just terribly upsetting when you cannot help your child

Proctalgia fugax- also another one. I have had for years what I can only describe as an anal cramp- comes on at night; sometimes post night shift. Isn’t related to pooping and is a bone aching pain that nothing relieves. Lasts about 20 minutes. Recently came across this as a possible diagnosis. If anything acute has been ruled out- could this be a possibility?

SD1978 · 03/02/2018 22:37

As in there is something else similar but more severe- can’t remember the name.

TroysMammy · 03/02/2018 22:41

I get it occasionally too. It wakes me up. I sit on the toilet for no reason, take 2 paracetamol and go back to bed. It's not constipation as I go when I get up every morning at around 6.15.

SD1978 · 03/02/2018 22:43

@TroysMammy- same cramp feeling? I have had a few ‘bad’ attacks and at 2am When all you want to do is sleep but can’t stay still is almost tear inducing for me.

earlybirdhasanap · 03/02/2018 22:56

I get this. I find being dehydrated makes it a lot worse and happens more often.

plum100 · 03/02/2018 22:59

SD1978 yes that's what the consultant thinks it might be but very almost undiagnosed in children - it's so upsetting I do it know how to help her . I literally see her clenching her bottom and holding on until it passes it's horrible

SD1978 · 03/02/2018 23:03

@plum100. If it is- it’s bloody awful. Nothing helps. Nothing relieves it, I find sitting and rocking at least means I’m doing something. Just remind her that it passes, and it will stop. Hard to remember whilst it’s happening- you just want it to stop!! I find moving at least takes your mind off it a little. It’s the only thing that’s ever made me cry- broken bones; illness, whatever- no problem. Ass cramp- curled up like a little baby. Just rub her back, and remind her it’s temporary

TroysMammy · 03/02/2018 23:09

I refer to them as anal spasms. Yes SD1978 usually around the 1am/2am mark.

SD1978 · 03/02/2018 23:20

I genuinely have never discussed them or been aware of other people having them. As much as I don’t wish then on anyone else- nice to finally not feel alone!

TroysMammy · 03/02/2018 23:24

I have but work in a GP surgery so I do get sympathy and we all discuss grim things we have. I just tell them it's a pain in the arse Grin.

SD1978 · 03/02/2018 23:27

I’m an ED nurse- and have never mentioned it or had anyone mention it at work. The only ass pain I’ve come across is heamarrhoids and post anal sex. Can’t say I’ve had either of those issues!

TroysMammy · 03/02/2018 23:32

I have neither but many years ago I shared a bath with my then husband. I ended up as usual at the plug end. Messing about he pulled me towards him. Unfortunately I was sitting over the plug and the little triangle holding the bath plug on the chain was pointing up and somehow it cut me and since that time I occasionally get the spasm.

Since then I had a new bath and the plug hole is in the middle now.

Fatbird71 · 03/02/2018 23:39

My daughter gets similar although in her case, it is usually down to constipation and she's regularly on movicol. I know you've ruled, that our already. Posting to say that she gets relief by sitting on a hot water bottle. The heat helps the tense muscles. It won't fix it but may help relieve some of her suffering.

Aurea · 03/02/2018 23:44

Weird I know but I've heard this can be due to molars coming in. There is a nerve that runs from your tooth to your nether regions. It's a classic case of pain in an unrelated area.

plum100 · 04/02/2018 09:02

Thanks you so much I know this sounds terrible but I'm so glad to find people who have this! it's so lovely to chat with people who know what it's like. From reading up on the internet it seems constipation is common with it she def isn't constipated but was terribly from the age of 18m- 3 years and was on constant movical. The consultant put her on it again to see if it helps but it caused her to be sick.
When she has her episodes they come badly every night for a period of about 3 weeks or more , she says it's literally
Like taking a big prickly thorn and it being poked up her mum, she says sometimes her vagina too.

It's so upsetting to see her in pain and she says she was so grateful at Xmas as she didn't have it and could go to bed like a normal person - sometimes it's so bad it wakes her up.
We've tried baths, paracetamol, ibuprofen, piraton and he prescribed her an inhaler as that's been known to relax muscles, none if it tends to work. Normally we have to soduko to distract. But I will definitely try the hot water bottle.

Might be silly to suggest but could it be a weird symptom of a food intolerance
