Face cream for child with eczema

DD (7) has very dry eczema prone skin on most of her body. Her face doesn't have red/itchy eczema as such, and I don't usually put anything on it at all, but in this weather it has become v dry. Especially under her eyes - it's so dry it flakes, poor thing.

We use epaderm on her body but it seems too greasy for face - any recommendations? Nothing with perfumes or essential oils

I think so @LoniceraJaponica. You could try ringing elena - she might help you out

My DS has terrible eczema has been under consultant and nothing has worked even child’s farm but have recently started using weleda white mallow and his skin is amazing Grin

Hulder · 30/12/2017 10:05

Just a check - what are you washing her face with and what shampoo are you using? Avoid anything with sodium laureth sulfate in - most standard shampoos, shower gels, face washes, as this is incredibly drying.

I found my ezcema improved massively just by doing this - even the run off from my shampoo in the shower was making my back dry.

I love Earth Friendly Baby, even though in my 40s I don't think I can claim I'm a baby anymore but you can just use the Epaderm as a soap feels a bit weird though.

Do not use aqueous cream under any circumstances - it's not recommended for ezcema for 2 reasons: 1) it contains SLS which irritates the skin of many people with ezcema and causes skin thinning and 2) it's a very poor emollient, not strong enough for most people with ezcema. It was only ever designed as a soap substitute not to be left on your skin anyway, and we now know it's a bad soap substitute.

Cousin had terrible cracked skin from eczema and found pure lanolin cream to be very good.

christmastreewithhairyfairy · 30/12/2017 11:20

Thanks all.

We don't use anything with SLS in on her and try to avoid fragrance if possible, which is why I worry about Child's farm.

For washing in the bath we used to use Dermol 600 but amazon has stopped doing it. Now use an antibacterial oilatum oil. For the occasional time we bother with hair washing we use the Faith in Nature fragrance free range. We don't use aqueous - I used to have it as a child and remember that it stings!

We don't wash her face with anything in particular, just give it a rub in the bath so I guess it would be the oilatum if anything

Was only checking Smile - I meet so many people with ezcema using SLS and fragrance and avoiding it makes such a massive difference. And swearing by aqueous because it used to be handed out by the bucket load.

Could be the anti-bac in the Oilatum - it can be a skin sensitizer.

christmastreewithhairyfairy · 30/12/2017 11:37

Def worth checking! I only really found out about SLS recently, and the aqueous myth has persisted for years.

Possibly the antibac - though she hasn't had a reaction as such, just really dry. I've noticed my skin drying out too, I think it's the weather.

Aveeno here too.

BluebellTheDonkey · 30/12/2017 11:40

You should be able to get the dermol on prescription? Diprobase is excellent for DS, also Epaderm on his body, all available on prescription.

LyannaStarktheWolfMaid · 30/12/2017 11:44

Hydrocortisone to clear the flare up then diprobase to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

jocktamsonsbairn · 30/12/2017 11:47

Totally agree with aveeno and use it constantly on my fave! The Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream is fab too - if you get the really thick version you can put it on sore dry areas overnight and it makes a big difference in the morning.

christmastreewithhairyfairy · 30/12/2017 12:27

Dammit I had some 8 hour cream and threw it away as never used it!
We get epaderm and elocon on prescription - the gp doesn't seem happy about prescribing bath oil (as I guess it's not a treatment as such) and I feel guilty about getting it for free as we go through it so quickly! I've dispatched dh to boots to get some aveeno, fingers crossed it's the solution

GP will have a list of things they can prescribe for skin and bath oil usually isn't on it. Just because it is prescribable, doesn't mean your local CCG is prepared to fund it.

Locally the advice is to use the Epaderm as soap as well as emollient rather than fund a Dermol prescription as well.

Appleandcinnamon · 30/12/2017 17:34

You can use aveeno in the bath. Costco have the best deal 3 bottle for the price of one at the chemist. We go through creams like water in this house. Baleneum is a good cream from the chemist. Although I think you can’t use it if you have a peanut allergy

BluebellTheDonkey · 30/12/2017 21:55

Oh Goodness don't feel bad about getting it on prescription! Ask a different GP if yours is being difficult. When DS's excema was severe, we were told (by a top child's allergy consultant) that we should be getting through one pump dispenser of epaderm a week, and one bottle of dermol in the bath every fortnight. We ended up going private to get his eczema sorted, it makes me mad that some Gps just brush it off. Couldn't get an NHS referral for love nor money. Anyway... get whatever you need to keep on top of it, emollient emollient emollient is the way to go, and get it on prescription!

BluebellTheDonkey · 30/12/2017 21:56

Also (sorry!) Aveeno made DS worse, his skin bled when we used it. I know it works wonders for some but just beware it might make things worse.

ThatsWotSheSaid · 30/12/2017 22:02

My dd has eczema on her eyes and we tried everything. Then someone told us to use vaseline after a bath 3 time in the same day. After one day it was gone and when ever it stars to come back I do the same again and it goes. Sometimes I just lay a flannel on her face if I really can't get her in a bath or shower. I dont know why it works but it's a miracle cure for my dd.

reallyanotherone · 30/12/2017 22:05

I know people swear by lush dream cream.

Mine i find i need to avoid petroleum. Which is the base for pretty much every generic cream from vaseline to expensive “brand” moisturisers.

So i stick to burts bees- beeswax base, or neals yard- olive oil base. Even stuff like lip balm or they get flare ups round their mouths. Lanolin would be an option- sheep wool base, but i like the range of products, bath oil, shampoo etc of bb and ny.

Mine are ok with childs farm which is petroleum free- the fragrance is natural oils rather than synthetic chemical. I am ok with it too and i react to air fresheners and synthetic fragrances. One reacts to lush, one (older, so maybe more tolerant) doesn’t, but i haven’t checked the ingredients.

Appleandcinnamon · 30/12/2017 22:05

It really is trial and error. I have 3 with mild eczema they all use different things. When my eldest was small his was horrific in places and the only thing that worked was blue Nivea. Heavily perfumed and full of god knows what. He still uses this now.

losingmymindiam · 31/12/2017 05:03

I used to have terrible eczema on face and used e45 as a child. As an adult I use Vichy nutrilogie 2. Never get dry skin if I use it once a day. Amazing stuff.

hevonbu · 31/12/2017 05:17

She wouldn't by any chance have an underlying food intolerance? (Like milk/dairy, gluten, or similar).

BattleCuntGalactica · 31/12/2017 05:50

Perhaps some Doublebase? It's available on prescription too.

JassyBelle · 31/12/2017 13:06

My kids get aveeno on prescription which keeps it away although I think my eldest needs something stronger on her body, we've tried diprobase, doublebase, 50/50, dermol etc. Where do you get Child's farm from? I've never heard of it.
