Very ill Baby and no idea what to do

My 13 month old baby is really poorly.
He's gone off and point blank refusing anything but water. Can't get any milk into him or food. He's lethargic and very clingy. He suddenly won't sleep through the night, won't nap at usual times, bad cough, diarrhoea, runny nose, temperature etc.
Thing is before he got poorly, he is a very independent baby. He loves to play and explore, eat everything, slept through the night and regular nap time. I rang 111 because every time we try to feed him food or formula he vomits it back up. Effortlessly. It just pours out of him. 111 told me to get him to the hospital who just sent us away. We went to the GP who checked him over and sent us away but I'm worried. It's been since Christmas Eve and he's just getting worse. Any advice?

Hope you get on ok with borrowing a pump- and that LO improves soon.

anothernetter · 30/12/2017 21:12

No wet nappy in over 12 hours is an awful long time. Don't let them fob you off. It sounds like he could be very dehydrated. It must be such a worrying time for you I hope you get the medical support for him that you need and that he gets better very soon

OrlandaFuriosa · 30/12/2017 21:22

Ditto here to handhold.

ORS best thing, but flat coke used in refugee camps if nothing else available, so have some on hand if he starts refusing ORS.

As far as I recall babies can survive a long time, many many days, without food, it’s liquid that’s the issue. So if you are gett8ngbthe ORS down you are do8ng brilliantly. If he’s got gastro he will throw up anything but esp if fibrous or fatty. Butter, oil, fruit all a disaster area. But the dry nappy/dark pee suggests an infection of some sort too, so bang on at them. And yes, I fear amoxicillin is one of those which is increasingly useless, at any rate in my family.

Look after yourself. If he’s alert and bright eyed, and it sounds as if increasingly is, you’ve been doing really well.

OrlandaFuriosa · 30/12/2017 21:23

Or if not dehydrated, has an infection that is stopping him pee (happened to me).

OrlandaFuriosa · 30/12/2017 21:23

Sorry about typos.

Robots1Humans0 · 30/12/2017 21:25

Op this sounds like such a worrying time for you!! When my little one was 3 months he had gastroenteritis that initially presented similar symptoms to meningitis so we ended up in hospital. While we were there the consultant suggested to dilute formula to half strength until he could tolerate it on his stomach again, and build up to normal. Wishing your little one well xxx

RandomMess · 30/12/2017 21:32

JustThankssounds utterly horrific, hope he gets seen very soon x

Rainbowsandflowers78 · 30/12/2017 22:10

I’m so sorry to mention this as I’ve done enough scaring/alarming you. But I don’t think I could live with myself if I didn’t. But pls remember lack of urine can also be a symptom of sepsis. I’m really quite sure he’s not septic as they are checking him over loads and also sepsis tends to come on quickly rather than slowly over a week - but maybe just ask them to confirm it’s been ruled out to you.
Sorry and going to be quiet and just lurk now!!

BrokenBattleDroid · 30/12/2017 22:21

A reasonable thing to mention rainbow.

Hope you can get some respite from the worry knowing you are in the right place and being taken seriously.

MotherCupboard · 30/12/2017 22:27

Poor him and poor you! I hope you get seen soon Flowers

Wineasaurous · 30/12/2017 22:37

Been sent home. Apparently it's nothing to be overly worried about. Even though that's not what they said the other day.
Basically been told that he looks fine, doesn't look dehydrated and has a wet mouth so they're not concerned.
Feel very fobbed off. Really tempted to try another hospital.

Seriously - go with your gut

Did they take his heart rate, temp, breathing rate etc? Are all these ok?

bobstersmum · 30/12/2017 22:40

Horrible for you and him, praying you get seen asap and get him on the mend really fast, you are doing an amazing job

Wineasaurous · 30/12/2017 22:44

Yup. Checked heart rate, temperature, breathing, listened to his gut, his chest etc. Looked in eyes and ears and at his bits. Looked over from head to foot. No blood tests or urine tests taken as apparently not needed.
Just a virus was the conclusion

OrlandaFuriosa · 30/12/2017 22:50

Well, I know if I were you I’d have him in with me, or be in with him, and alternate checking him regularly but I’m a neurotic whatsit.

And if there were a serious change I’d be back there.

Hope he feels better in the morning. When he does, he will probably recover at the speed of Mo Farah, so if you can find someone to give you some relief, so you can catch up, do so!

helensburgh · 30/12/2017 22:50

Oh goodness. Swriulously go elsewhere.
He may have a UTI or infection elsewhere.
Routine bloods needed done to check dehydration.goodness hope you get help

Inkythemouse · 30/12/2017 22:55

Dd had a similar virus a few weeks ago.
We kept giving her small sips of flat lemonade.
We also didn't give her any dairy products for 48 hours towards the end of it in case she had developed an allergy to that.
When we took her to the doctor (about 5days in) even tho she was urinating once in 24 hours they said she wasn't dehydrated and just to keep up with sips of water.
Hope your little one feels better soon

ChocolateDinosaur · 30/12/2017 22:56

Recent research suggest Apple Juice just as good as ORS and often more palatable- worth a try?

Rainbowsandflowers78 · 30/12/2017 23:03

Do you remember what his heart rate was? If that is in normal range then a good indicator that you don’t have to worry too much about anything really bad and also it goes up I think if you are dehydrated too

ChocolateDinosaur · 30/12/2017 23:05

If observations are normal it’s really reassuring- rapid breathing and heart rate particularly are associated with ‘sick’ children.
Diarrhoea can last 10-14 days in some cases so this could go on a while. Sorry 😐

MynewnameisKy · 30/12/2017 23:24

@Wineasaurous go back and read the guidelines I posted.

A baby with an infection would have a fever. If he doesn't have a fever and rapid heart rate then it isn't a kidney infection or any other infection.

It's really worrying and you must be exhausted by this stage but you need to listen to the Dr's and not random people on the internet.

ThanksI hope he perks up soon. Keep going with the ORS.

MynewnameisKy · 30/12/2017 23:28

ORS is specifically formulated to have all the right levels of Sodium, Potassium etc to prevent dehydration in these specific circumstances. It doesn't make sense to stop ORS for something less suitable.

If you don't have medical knowledge please don't post random things that might help, it's really important for OP to follow the medical advice.

Naty1 · 31/12/2017 00:04

Hopefully he will start to feel better once the AB kick in.
There are viruses called adenoviruses which can cause stomach issues, cough, ear imfection, conjunctivitis and urine infections. So you could seemingly get all this at once.

midsummabreak · 31/12/2017 00:35

Go to another hospital. If they could at the very least offer IV fluids he would feel so much better. My daughter had four days of gastro and was so ill she was drifting in and out of sleep during the day , stopped weeing, vomitting up even iced lollies They put her on a drip and gave intravenous fluids and she was so much better A child who has not eaten for days and days and is being syrine fed fluids may have dangerously low electrolytes and always on verge of dehydration - surely worth a. blood test at hospital?
As well as flat lemonade Try salty foods like BBQ shapes biscuits and 2 minute noodle to replace salt

Stolenchoccies · 31/12/2017 01:10

Hope he improves. If he is worse or no improvement then do get him seen again. Is this a specific paediatric hosp?
