BF baby not pooped in a week

lizzlebizzle33 · 19/12/2017 12:02

My 8 week old is EBF and hadn't had a poop in a week. He's passing a lot of smelly wind and he has plenty of wet nappies.
He seems fine in himself other than that.
I hear that this is quite normal for breastfed babies but still a little worried, anyone have experience of this or know is there anything I can do to help him go ( if he needs to that is)

My Dd was like this - it is quite weird but as long as weight gain is fine / weeing regularly I think you do not need to worry at that age.

Natsku · 19/12/2017 12:13

I think it's supposed to be in the normal range for BF babies and if he seems fine (not showing constipation pain) then I wouldn't worry. Mine would go for a week without pooing sometimes but it did seem to bother her, she was old enough for solids at that point so I'd feed her prunes (and the most effective thing was taking her into the sauna - that released the poo dramatically all over me and the sauna bench!!)

Thank you, yes he is gaining weight well and is a happy little guy most of the time, he does have the odd squirm and make s noise like he's trying to poop but then nothing.

How long would you let them go without a number 2 before intervening in some way?x

I had this with DS. The health visitor said it's not uncommon for BF babies to go up to 10 days without pooing. She said after 10 it's best to speak to the GP

MoanaofMotunui · 19/12/2017 12:56

Sorry, posted too soon. They'll either advise you to give some cooked boiled water (which you could try in the mean time) or prescribe some lactulose.

PhobiaRuiningLife · 19/12/2017 13:58

My DS was like this. Still is at age 4. In fact we are in poo watch as it's been 6 days.
When he was tiny he sometimes went longer. Once he went over 10 days and so we took him to GP and they sent us to the children's ward. But he was regularly going a week between poos.
If you are concerned, speak to your health visitor.

lizzlebizzle33 · 19/12/2017 15:05

Thank you ladies, he has his 8 week check up tomorrow anyway so I will speak to his GP then.x

My dd went 10 days once. Hv told me to call them if she went to 11 because that was the practice record! When she went she went, I swear my tiny baby crapped a pint of poo.

Figgypuddingandcustard · 19/12/2017 15:12

My DS was like this, in agony and with room clearing wind. It turned out to be CMPA and as soon as I cut dairy out of my diet DS started pooing daily and the smelly wind stopped. Obviously I consulted HV throughout.

lizzlebizzle33 · 19/12/2017 17:24

Lol that is what I am dreading, a pint of poo!
We are on day 8 today, I really hope he goes soon, even if it's all over me I don't care! 😂

I've just drank a big bottle of apple juice so either way one of us will poop 😂😂

So we spoke to the gp today and he prescribed lactulose solution for LO, but after reading a bit of other people's experiences of it Im not sure what is for the best.

Apparently it can make them very windy and grumpy for days before it works, if it even does work.

Anybody else's babes had lactulose and did it work for them?

Mine was going every 9-10 days which HV wasn’t happy about, but there were/are also issues such as slow weight gain, very foul smelling & darker than normal poo.

I only recently clicked it started after his 8 week immunisations, they started becoming slightly more regular (4-7days) and not smelly, correct colour etc around 19 weeks. On reading up on it I think it may have been the rotavirus vaccine.

I was referred to GP about the combination of things who has referred me to peads (cause of weight) but wouldn’t prescribe anyway for bowels as they were almost liquid so she thought it could make it worse.

lizzlebizzle33 · 20/12/2017 21:46

Well that was horrible, just tried to give him 2.5 ml like the doc said, did it slowly into side of his cheek and he nearly choked on it, he nearly stopped breathing!!! Scariest moment of my life!!!!
I don't know what I did wrong but I'm not in a hurry to try again

I've now just been reading about aspiration and it causing pneumonia and am shit scared! I should probably stop googling things

Natsku · 21/12/2017 07:00

I tried lactulose with DD when she was about 3 or 4 months old and it did make her really windy and grumpy so I stopped it so don't know if it would have worked or not.

Try not to google it! It's unlikely he aspirated it but give the doctor or HV a call if you're really worried

flumpybear · 21/12/2017 07:14

My children were like this too so I did baby massage classes at
The health centre - I won't try to explain what to do as you need to be taught properly but I'd recommend it

NerrSnerr · 21/12/2017 07:21

Good luck and make sure you have a few changes of clothes when you go out.

syobruof · 21/12/2017 07:34

My son, if I remember correctly, went about 14 days. You can try this - lay your baby on your changing mat - bend their legs up into the tummy and then circle them gently clockwise - you can do this for quite a while- I do think this helps. Other suggestions people made were a tiny bit of prune juice (Have friends who did this) and apparently stimulating the reflex with a cotton bud at the bottom (very carefully!). Was never sure about that one. But the main thing I’d say is most likely it is nothing to worry about and is normal for EBF babies. Congratulations on your baby. Enjoy your special time.

Lindy2 · 21/12/2017 07:40

I think it's pretty normal for a bf baby. They just digest all the milk so don't produce poops.
My baby went about 8 or 9 days once but was perfectly happy and well. When she did go it was just a normal sized poop - it thought it was going to be enormous 😂

lizzlebizzle33 · 21/12/2017 08:57

Syobruof I just spent two minutes cycling his legs and Shazam! Poop explosion! I had him on a towel with his nappy off, safe to say that towel is now in the bin 😂💩
Thank you all for your advice and support, I have a happy baby now.xxx

Yay!!
Hooray for the poop explosion!

ZigZagandDustin · 21/12/2017 09:13

11 days is the benchmark for it maybe being an issue. You've a few days to go yet! If baby is happy try not to worry.

ZigZagandDustin · 21/12/2017 09:13

Ah missed the update. Great!

ICJump · 21/12/2017 09:17

If your worried again you can feed more breastmilk( offer an extra side or feed between feeds) as breastmilk as laxative effect too

lizzlebizzle33 · 27/12/2017 08:51

Hi ladies, my boy hasn't popped since this last post, 6 days now. Do you think this is just going to be a regular thing and it's nothing to worry about?
He's a little squirmy and quite gassy but happy other than that.
Do you think should try the lactulose again or just wait?x
