Discharge from anus

My son (5) seems to have some mucus discharge. I say 'seems to have' because I have only seen the dried stains in his underwear. It is white/yellowish in colour and it does not smell.
His bum is very itchy too and today is was bright red

We have an appointment with the doctor next week, but I wondered if anyone had any experience?

Treat him for worms anyway but he really should have the gp take a look just to make sure there’s nothing else going on.

I checked his bum today and didn't see anything like that (albeit I was not looking for them)

what are the symptoms of worms? just itchiness?
I do not think it is that, he says it stings inside Sad

Yes it can feel stingy if he's scratched in the night when asleep and he has scratched himself.

Use a torch or your phone light and look. Otherwise doctor is best idea.

Tiny, like threads

Doesn't look like it's worms then. I'd pop him along to the doctor I think

You do need to have a good look with a bright torch.
They just look like tiny threads.
Sometimes you don't see anything for a few seconds, then you will see one emerge. They wiggle (shudders at the memory).
Thread worms are very, very common among nursery and primary children.
Small children scratch their bottoms, poke their noses and lick their fingers. They also share cups, play do, etc.
It is really important to read and follow the instructions on the treatment.
And you have to treat the whole family.

He is got tight pyjamas tonight and it was not easy to get access

Can you buy the treatment over the counter?

Yes you can buy it at any pharmacy.

Have a look at his poo, OP. Get him to keep one in the bowl for you to peek at.

If no joy, you need to get him to the GP. They can test a poo sample or they'll ask you to pop some tape around DS's anus first thing in the morning and test the tape.

Not in my experience, however if he’s been scratching a lot and hard he could have caused some damage to the skin.

Just go to the chemist tomorrow and get some ovex and treat him. However keep the gp appointment just Incase there’s a germ got in there. A discharge in a child that young really needs a doctor.

off to buy treatment tomorrow!

TiesThatBindMe yes, from the NHS site: Along with the eggs, the worm also secretes a mucus that causes itching.

You’ll need to treat the whole household and again 2 weeks later. Do a hot wash of all underwear and do a damp dust of the house to collect the eggs up. Wash his bum as soon as he gets up to remove any eggs there.
