Does this look like chickenpox to you??

I noticed a couple spots around my DDs midriff this morning when getting her changed - initially I thought it could be a nappy irritation as she is still in bedtime nappies, but then I noticed a couple other random spots on her thighs and arms. After a couple hours she had quite a few spots on her torso and thighs and a few more on her arms. I instantly thought chickenpox as that's what I thought they looked like, however none have blistered and no more have appeared after the first couple of hours. She doesn't seem too bothered by them and is well in herself.

When I took her to bed she felt a bit clammy and I've just checked on her to find her hair drenched in sweat but she's really cool to the touch - taken her temp and it's 36C so not too low.

Does this sound like chickenpox or could it be something else?

Pic shows the worst affected area on her stomach this evening.

Looks like an allergic reaction to me.
Is there a big spot? Gp told me to look out for a big mark then all the little spots

joolspoon · 23/08/2017 23:00

Disclaimer I'm not a doc so if you are worried then check with medic.

SnowiestMountain · 23/08/2017 23:01

I wouldn't say chicken pox, but it does look like something else, if it's still there in the morning I'd get it checked out.

stella23 · 23/08/2017 23:07

Looks similar to my ds's chicken pox but after he had them for a while. Do they have any white spots at all

HeyRoly · 23/08/2017 23:09

I would say most likely pox, yes. It can take time for the blisters to form.

Jedimum1 · 23/08/2017 23:16

Both my DC got the spots with blisters, those look quite flat / dry. Can you post a close up of one?

Could it be eczema? www.babycenter.com/0_eczema-in-children_11427.bc

YogiYoni · 23/08/2017 23:20

Not a medic, but I'd say that's pox

SleepForTheWeek · 24/08/2017 02:41

No obvious white spots in the middle - don't think it's eczema as they appeared very quickly just like pox would. They are not dry to the touch and not raised either.

Do you think if there's no sign of blistering (24H) then it's unlikely to be chickenpox? I don't want to take her to GO incase it is and she spreads it - but also don't want to stay in solitary confinement unnecessarily!

Looks a lot like the start of chicken pox. The little raised white dots within the spot are tiny and very hard to see at first. I could only barely see them with a magnifier when my vaccinated DD had them. But sure enough, within a day the few spots were many and were obviously CP.

SleepForTheWeek · 24/08/2017 07:51

Rash hasn't developed overnight - if anything it looks a bit better 🤔

If they don't blister / raise, I don't think it's pox. Mine developed the blisters on first red marks within hours. All their friends noticed their own within 24h, as we met in Nursery, we were discussing if it could be or not (only 2 spots in the morning) and by night time they were covered and next day it was obvious with blisters.

SleepForTheWeek · 24/08/2017 08:39

That's it this morning - got a doctors appointment at 11.

Should I still keep her in confinement??

OP posts:
Jedimum1 · 24/08/2017 11:24

Looks a bit more raised... Keep her in the pram and keep her from touching surfaces? Can you see any tiny blister in the centre?

SleepForTheWeek · 24/08/2017 12:37

Doc was a bit useless - said it didn't LOOK like CP but couldn't rule it out and just to keep an eye on it. I've to keep her off nursery just in case.

It's got worse since this morning. looks like a reaction to me but what do I know?!

Could it be hives, which is a reaction to something. My son used to get hives when he was under the weather, anti histamine sorted him out.

HeyRoly · 24/08/2017 14:39

That definitely doesn't look like pox now. What a mystery!

SleepForTheWeek · 24/08/2017 16:23

I've just tried to give her piriton - she took them but was immediately sick
(she's hopeless with medicine!)

She's still acting well but more spots forming!

That stuff is evil, revolting taste. My DD did the same. Can you ask GP over the phone if he could give you a antihistaminic cream instead? Or if there's anything with a different taste?

shewolfmum · 25/08/2017 00:22

How is she? Looks like hives. Any new product? Oat sock in bath can help if they are itchy.

SleepForTheWeek · 25/08/2017 02:36

The Gp didn't even mention an antihistamine, I just went to the chemist and asked myself. It does look like hives. I'm going to take her back in the morning if no better, she's lying beside me at the moment quite unsettled as think it's a bit itchy. I've got calamine lotion from when she had HFM a few weeks ago so will use that if she's still itchy

I've managed to get Piriton into her which has made a huge difference BUT she is still coming out in new spots - so now I know it's a reaction i need to find the trigger!

Jedimum1 · 26/08/2017 18:35

What did you do in the 24h before the first spot appeared? Anything new? New brand of food? New drink? New shower gel? New bedding? Flowers blossoming in the garden? New pet around? :(

SleepForTheWeek · 28/08/2017 16:33

The only thing different directly before the outbreak was I washed her sheets in bio powder rather than non bio liquid. I've since changed them again with no difference.

This morning her whole back is covered and her legs and feet look sore too. She was up during the night scratching her feet which is the first time it's disturbed her

OP posts:
Jedimum1 · 28/08/2017 20:09

Poor little thing :(
I'd try to wash anything else that might have been washed with the bio detergent. My DH has sensitive skin and we had to switch to non bio detergents and sensitive 0% sanex shower gels. It might take a couple of days to see any difference. Have you tried any topical antihistamine cream? Is the piriton doing anything? Might be time to go back to the GP and have your DS tested for allergies :(
Could she have developed a mild intolerance to any food? Milk? Nuts?

HeyRoly · 28/08/2017 20:16

That doesn't sound normal for an allergic reaction, to be breaking out in more sores/hives days after the first bout. I'd take her back to the GP if I were you.
