Two year old complaining of sore leg

Twopeapods · 08/07/2017 00:11

Hi my DD(2) has been complaining of a sore leg since Tuesday. She normally will walk everywhere and we stopped using a buggy a while ago, but she was asking for it today when we went on a day out. She's had a temperature on off for a few days and hasn't eaten very much this week especially, although her appetite isn't great anyway lately. But today as we were out for a good few hours I noticed she started limping on the leg she was saying was sore. There's no obvious bruises and I can't think she's had a fall. I had to work extra this week so today was my first day off with her. My mum and MIL looked after her and said she mentioned her leg but only once and quickly distracted.
I will make an appointment Monday as I am worried, but does anyone have any ideas?

Could be growing pains.

Twopeapods · 08/07/2017 19:08

I read about growing pains, and it said that they shouldn't make a child limp. I'm making an appointment on Monday as I'm worried about her generally. She went from stopping naps to going back to sleeping for 2/3 hours a day and no longer will eat breakfast or dinner. She will only eat one meal a day at lunch and refuse all else.

My dd had this aged 18months it was transient synovitis, nothing very serious but they told me it was important to not shrug off the symptoms of a temp, a limp and leg pain in a child as they could be signs of something quite serious.

MrsKCastle · 08/07/2017 19:23

Could be lots of different things, keep an eye on her tomorrow - look out for it getting worse, high temperature, red/swollen joints or if she refuses to walk or stand on it. If you're worried take her to see OOH. Hopefully though she's just getting over a virus, that can cause aches and pains.

JustMumNowNotMe · 08/07/2017 19:28

Watching with interest, as you could have described my DD2 to a T....

Twopeapods · 08/07/2017 21:33

I'll keep a close eye tomorrow. I was working today so she was with my DH all day and she did complain once of a sore leg but played at the park this avo. No dinner tonight which seems to be normal lately. And no breakfast this morning. Not even strawberries and yogurt which she loves. Im now off for the next couple days and will see GP Monday. Or at least make an appointment. They usually take 5-7 days round here.

DD has the doctors tomorrow. I forgot to say she has a bruise looking thing which came up on her side about a month ago and she was at the OOH for something enrelated (croup) when the doc asked about it. He said to take her in if it didn't go away. I've also felt her glands which are up in her neck. Not the ones for her throats but slightly lower down, and are pea sized. Is it normal to feel glands at any time? I'm actually really worried if you look up the symptoms it comes up with the nasties. She is still complaining of a sore leg here and there although haven't noticed any limping today. I wish I hadn't googled Sad

If shes fighting a virus thats quite normal for glands to be up. It probably isnt anything serious but its good to get her checked out anyway

mygorgeousmilo · 11/07/2017 20:35

You have to take her to see a doctor. A mum at school's younger child had these symptoms and was rushed into hospital for tests because it was some kind of indication of a serious problem. That problem was ruled out and she was absolutely fine, but I remember it was all a panic at the time. Symtoms and Age are the same, get her checked out. Sorry to sound scary but don't want to brush it off. Let us know how you get on Flowers

thisismadness77 · 11/07/2017 20:36

Hope it's nothing serious and glad you got an appointment sorted.

Twopeapods · 11/07/2017 20:51

We met up with a friend whose DD is the same age yesterday, who we haven't seen in a good couple of months, and the energy difference was unbelievable. We went to soft play where her DD ran round crazy the whole time, and mine was 10 minutes before coming out and asking for her lamby and wanted to cuddle in sleepy. My friend is a nurse and even she couldn't believe how zapped she is. I'm hoping it's some sort of deficiency with her poor appetite. She does get a daily vitamin but maybe need to change brands. I feel so sick about this.

Hopefully the doctors tomorrow can offer some explanation.

If she isn't eating a great deal she won't have much energy so more likely to get tired than a child who is eating three meals a day.

How worrying for you.

MrsKCastle · 11/07/2017 20:58

I hope the doctor can reassure you that it's nothing serious. You're doing the right thing to get her checked out. Let us know how you get on.

notWORKzilla · 11/07/2017 21:02

Poor you and your DD. You just be so worried.
I hope the GP can help tomorrow. Best of luck.

BikeRunSki · 11/07/2017 21:16

Not to worry you, but DS had exactly these symptoms when he was 17 months old, his temp was 42 degrees and Calpol didn't touch it. We saw an OOH GP on the Sunday evening an were admitted straight to hospital. DS was diagnosed with Reactive Arthritis and was in for 9 days on IV antibiotics.

Twopeapods · 11/07/2017 21:57

Bike was your DSs leg swollen? She hasn't had a temp that high. Just between 38-39 and not every day either. And with her leg, she isn't limping all the time, just on and off.

OP posts:
BikeRunSki · 12/07/2017 07:14

DS's knee was not visibly swollen.

thethoughtfox · 12/07/2017 08:48

When me little one started limping, the doctor said to bring her in immediately. There is something potentially serious they have to rule out.

Twopeapods · 12/07/2017 15:57

The GP checked her out too to bottom and couldn't see anything wrong with her leg. Chest was clear but he felt her glands were up. He felt her tummy and said her liver is enlarged and that it could be something called mononucleosis. I've probably spelt that wrong. He said it can last the kind of time frame I described but I need to take her back in two weeks if there's no difference. And they would arrange bloods after that. I don't really know what to make of it wether it's good or bad.

Itsjustaphase84 · 12/07/2017 16:04

I really hope she is OK. Please keep us posted. Fingers crossed all is OK and it passes xx

BikeRunSki · 12/07/2017 17:15

Mononucleosis is glandular fever.

Walkacrossthesand · 12/07/2017 17:29

OP, I wouldn't wait 2 weeks with a limping 2 year old with an enlarged liver. See GP again tomorrow and ask for urgent paed appointment.

Cherry78 · 17/07/2017 22:00

How are things Twopeas?

Twopeapods · 18/07/2017 22:20

We have an appointment for Friday.
She is still VERY tired. Wanting to use buggy instead of walking, although i don't think she's had much fevers. Appetite is still not great.
She was running about the garden a couple days ago and she kept falling over. Every 7-8 yards. So maybe her leg is still sore. As tired as she is she is such a happy little soul. Not moaning at all.
If it was something serious I'm guessing the fevers would be everyday.
I got myself so worked up the other day. I had to have CT scans and x rays when I was pregnant, and she broke her arm badly September last year and had about 20 odd x rays so I thought she's been exposed to too much radiation!

OP posts:
notWORKzilla · 19/07/2017 08:07

I am not a medic, but I'm sure it is nothing to do with radiation.

Is your appointment on friday with a paediatrician? or the GP.
If it's the GP I would ask for a referral to a paediatric neurologist.
Increased tiredness and balance getting gradually worse can be signs that something is seriously wrong. It would be good to get it ruled out.
