Baby with very sore bum

kingfishergreen · 06/06/2017 00:09

Poor old DD is seven months old. She has two teeth but is definitely teething again (on and off) at the moment.

She's weaning quite well (eating very little in terms of quantity eaten, but of lots of different tastes and textures). But she has SUCH a sore bum.

It's making her cry with pain when we change her (we use Pampers and Water Wipes). It doesn't look that bad (red, but not livid looking). It seems that it's the wipes are stinging so we're using water and cotton wool. Sudocreme is also stinging.

We're going to try Metanium (sp?) and she's been to the doctor to rule out infection.

Any other ideas? It's horrid to see our usually cheery little girl in so much pain she actually cries.

I'm posting at midnight because it's actually waking her up!

Yellow metanium.

ohfourfoxache · 06/06/2017 00:12

Is she topped up with calpol?

glitterglitters · 06/06/2017 00:13

Poor thing Sadwe had a few sore bleeds bottoms and best I can recommend try and get as much air to it as possible and try and make sure it's really dry before you put the nappy on.

Also if it's really hurting a bit of calpol might take the edge off and help her sleep. I'd avoid any "acidic" foods like tomatoes etc in the meantime. Thankfully often theee will clear up as quickly as they appear.

Yellow metanium is good and when her bottom is a bit better maybe use a barrier cream when she's showing signs of teething xxx

kingfishergreen · 06/06/2017 00:20

Yellow Metanium it is, thank you,
we'll get some tomorrow. I tried to order some on Amazon but it's one of those 'add on' products that I really don't understand.

I gave her some Calpol about two hours ago, so she has got a little block of sleep until she woke up crying 20 mins ago, I'll keep her topped up.

Good point on the acidic foods, she really enjoys fruit, so well cut back on that.

DH is home with her tomorrow and has agreed that when they're in the house she will be nappyless (on some kind of towel/plastic set-up in case of dire emergency).

She's had a tiny bit of nappy rash before, but nothing for ages and nothing like this. Luckily no fissures or break in the skin, but it's obviously so sore, poor little mite.

I was just going to ask if you used pampers.
Change them.
I always bought pampers thinking I was doing the right thing'buying the best'. My LO had the same thing once we changed from a particular size. My sister, mother of 5, advised me to buy Lidl nappies. Purely because of the rash. Never had a problem after that.
Honestly could not believe it.
Pampers made her so raw, I felt awful. She was changed so often I knew it couldn't be me.
Bite the bullet and swap, I did and was so glad.
Hope your LO feel better soon.

kingfishergreen · 06/06/2017 00:24

I dispatch DH on a Lidl mission, it's certainly worth a go. I worry about the toxic smell of Pampers at the best of times. Maybe she's reacting to that.

She also went swimming for the first time today, so potentially chlorine related. I'll make sure we rinse her extra well next time.

No advice on the rash, but for her nappy free time try using puppy training pads. You can get them quite cheaply from Wilkos.

ohfourfoxache · 06/06/2017 00:25

Sudocrem is supposed to have a mild anaesthetic in it. I'd be tempted to make sure that the skin is completely dry then absolutely slather the stuff on, just to create as much of a barrier between skin and nappy as possible

GraceGrape · 06/06/2017 00:26

Yellow metanium is good but it's important to realise that it treats an existing nappy rash but doesn't act as a barrier. You need to use a barrier cream as well.

First, put the yellow metanium on in a thin layer. This will treat the existing soreness. Then let it dry completely before covering it with a layer of sudocrem to act as a barrier to prevent her from getting any more sore. Try to let her have as much nappy-free time as possible.

I always found Pampers were rubbish. Lidl nappies are very good, so are Tesco own-brand.

HCantThinkOfAUsername · 06/06/2017 00:26

Came to say too about pampers nappy, both my sons didn't get on with them and caused sore bums, highly recommended lidls/Aldi nappies.

GraceGrape · 06/06/2017 00:28

Also, I know you use the water wipes but while she has the rash I would just use luke-warm water and cotton wool.

sycamore54321 · 06/06/2017 00:33

You mention fruit; has she eaten pineapple at all? My boy got his only serious nappy rash from pineapple (mumsnet helped me figure out this as the cause) and it was horrendous. It was as though his skin had been burnt. We tried the various healing creams covered by a thick layer of Sudocreme but ultimately unfortunately it just took time. Washing with plain water only, max nappy-free time etc as above but it is horrid. Is she old enough to have infant iboprofen as well for pain management?

For what it's worth, I find none of the other brand nappies were anywhere close to Pampers for overnight dryness so if trying Lidl etc maybe go up a size for more absorbency. And prepare for additional overnight nappy changes. As this is a sudden thing, I doubt the nappy itself is the cause if she has been wearing the same brand for ages.

Also look up yeast infection and watch out for it - my child got a secondary yeast infection in the burnt skin as it started to heal and only prescription cream would treat it.

Poor wee baby, hope she recovers quickly.

sycamore54321 · 06/06/2017 00:34

Oh and we use water wipes too - if the cotton wool gets too sticky, then try using a water wipe that you have rinsed out yourself in cool water. This will be a bit soothing.

Also, keep the creams in a cool place or in the fridge if the packaging suggests they can tolerate it.

FancyFingers · 06/06/2017 00:35

Brulidine cream is brilliant for nappy rash.

My dm works as a dispenser in a chemist and the pharmacist really rates it.

I use it for many things, and it really takes the sting away with burns.

My midwife friend used it with her 5 dc too.

Orangebird69 · 06/06/2017 00:38

I've used Pampers on my ds for the whole of his 20mo and he's only had nappy rash once (I think consuming approx 8 satsumas in one day may have been the reason)...

Use yellow metanium for the rash and then white metanium as a barrier cream on top.

StarSpotter · 06/06/2017 00:41

I second the fact it may be some type of acidic fruit as my baby got very bad nappy rash from oranges. It stopped as soon as I limited them! I also use Pampers without problems, but have issues with the Aldi Ines. All babies are different.

tobeornottobe1 · 06/06/2017 00:42

Leave her nappy off, put a large incontience pad underneath her, and use bepanthen cream its amazing. AIR as much as possible.

Ylvamoon · 06/06/2017 00:44

I agree with one of the other posters, check her diet! A lot of fruit = acid = sore bum. Both my DD & DS loved kiwi fruit... but it made them sore, same as to many oranges and pineapple.
Nappy free time worked best for us!

kingfishergreen · 06/06/2017 08:32

Although she doesn't eat very much of anything, she really went-for some mango yesterday and had her first pineapple a few days before. Dreaded pineapple 🍍

DH is briefed on the changes to make today:

No fruit for a while
As much air as possible
Lidl nappies instead of Pampers
Only water instead of wipes
Yellow Metanium dried then covers with a barrier cream (Sudocreme)

...of course we won't know what works, I just hope something does.

Thanks all!

DD used to suffer from this and what worked was good old Vaseline as a barrier.

AVeryBigHouse · 06/06/2017 08:44

There's no need to cover the metanium with sudacreme...metanium works wonders on its own! You should see a difference within a day. If not it's worth considering a fungal infection. My gp prescribed caneston cream.

wesleybear83 · 06/06/2017 08:44

I use fullers earth powder on top of yellow metanium or sudecrem. I got it off eBay as my mam and grandma used it. Its amazing

Me4You · 06/06/2017 08:50

Do you always dry her bottom with a tissue before putting the new nappy on? I routinely do this as the wipes (especially water wipes, which I otherwise love) can be quite damp.
