Baby with very sore bum

Poor old DD is seven months old. She has two teeth but is definitely teething again (on and off) at the moment.

She's weaning quite well (eating very little in terms of quantity eaten, but of lots of different tastes and textures). But she has SUCH a sore bum.

It's making her cry with pain when we change her (we use Pampers and Water Wipes). It doesn't look that bad (red, but not livid looking). It seems that it's the wipes are stinging so we're using water and cotton wool. Sudocreme is also stinging.

We're going to try Metanium (sp?) and she's been to the doctor to rule out infection.

Any other ideas? It's horrid to see our usually cheery little girl in so much pain she actually cries.

Yep,was also coming on here to suggest vaseline.

SilenceOfThePrams · 06/06/2017 08:56

Cooled chamomile tea may be gentler than water to wash with.

Don't try to get all the metanium off each nappy change, wipe away the soiling then slather more on top.

Don't use bubble bath but try putting oats in a sock and leaving that to soak in the water when she baths.

I was coming to suggest changing nappies

With DS1 I had to switch papers to buggies when we got to bigger sizes.

DD could never use papers and g it very sore from them. I switched to numerous different nappies but only Sainsbury's little ones seemed to keep her dry enough.

I never bothered with pampers for DS2 and just went straight into Sainsbury's ones

HerRoyalFattyness · 06/06/2017 08:58

Pampers and huggies. Stupid phone

kingfishergreen · 06/06/2017 08:59

meforyou if it looks soggy I dab it with a clean muslin to dry it. But a tissue is a good idea (and saves the whole "is there wee on this muslin?" debate).

We always dry after wipes with the dedicated 'bum muslin' then use Vaseline as a barrier cream.
The yellow cream is great when they have nappy rash, but one time it was fierce red and not going. Went to the GP and she prescribed some canesten steroid cream. Can only be applied twice a day, but that combined with nappy off time cleared it up within a couple of days.

Almondbrew · 06/06/2017 09:12

Metanium is the best nappy rash creme i have come across. You just need to apply a thin layer several times a day.

skyzumarubble · 06/06/2017 09:12

Metanium to clear this up, lots of nappy free time and then we used Neals Yard barrier cream which was fab.

Dry her bum using the cool setting on hairdryer.

If skin is broken metanium will sting so be careful. Ask Dr to prescribe cavilon barrier cream, only thing that's worked for my 25 poos a day DS Sad (finally got to the bottom of that one and now at a few poos a day and bum on the mend thank god!)

kingfishergreen · 06/06/2017 09:55

Twenty Five Poos a Day!! Wow, poor DS you

DD has recently increased to four or five (from zero or one), I put that down to the new foods she's trying.

DD would LOVE to have her bum dried with the hairdryer, she thinks it's the funniest implement in the house. I must admit that at midnight last night I was trying to soothe her bum by dangling her in front of a room-fan. Poor little girl :(

Yeah it wasn't fun, got to the point where we were both crying at every nappy change, which when it's 25 times a day is a bit much! The hairdryer takes the moisture off the skin to help out heal. I honestly can't recommend cavilon enough, it's the only thing that helped and we tried EVERYTHING!

kingfishergreen · 06/06/2017 11:03

Katniss It's so sad to see them so sad. She rarely cries, but there is a special awfulness about her crying with actual pain (rather than tiredness or annoyance that she can't get to the inappropriate object she wants to chew). She was trying to get away from her own bum,

She seems a lot better today, DH has a list of sore-bum-watchouts.

Yeah it's awful. In currently sat watching my boy sleeping with his little nappy-less bum in the air. Not quite how I thought I'd spend maternity leave Confused

kingfishergreen · 07/06/2017 08:49

In good news one of the fifteen things we're trying seems to have worked, though her bum is still sore/red, she's no longer crying when she's changed. Thank goodness!

Thanks for all the suggestions!

I would second Cavillon Barrier cream. I use it in the pump spray for nappy rash & the cream in a tube for his eczema. You can buy it or get it on prescription. I put the spray on after bepanthen. Especially good when you can't leave the nappy off as you're going in the car etc. Also I find cotton wool pads a lot better than cotton wool balls for not leaving bits on fluff on the skin.
