How to disguise movicol

Thingywhatsit · 06/03/2017 12:29

Hi,

Dd (2.10) has just been prescribed movicol for poo issues ..... she is also on max dose of Senna which she will take (with bribes) but first lot of movicol wasn't a great success, mixed with some orange squash. Ended up spooning it into her with a choc button as a reward after every mouthful. She refused anymore after about two thirds.

Will have to try again this evening, so can you please give me your best tips on how to disguise it? I have no idea what to do other than put a bit of squash in which is what dr told me to do

Thanks

At least a pint sized glass or cup. Squash in first then movicol then water, if there is any sign of bits (but there shouldnt by) shake or stir. Shouldn't really be able to taste it

Niklepic · 06/03/2017 12:35

I put DDs in with her milk. She's never noticed.

Thingywhatsit · 06/03/2017 12:40

Oooh I can put it in milk???? She loves her milk so might try that tonight......

I mix it with smoothie or flavoured milk. Seems to do the trick.

MoMandaS · 06/03/2017 12:44

Apple juice (the fresh sort, not from concentrate). It's quite a salty flavour so she might not like it in milk. I give one sachet in about 100ml of juice and deliver it via a Calpol syringe (takes a long time but you don't have to give it all at once).

SliceOfLime · 06/03/2017 12:46

We used to mix it with chocolate ice cream which went down very wellSmile

quirkychick · 06/03/2017 12:47

We used to put it in smoothies, but now dd2 is older, we put it in juice. You can get flavoured btw.

catinbooots · 06/03/2017 12:49

We used to mix the chocolate one in with DS's milk.

My sympathy OP. Constipation is distressing for all of you. It does get better though I promise x

DubiousCredentials · 06/03/2017 12:51

I used to put it in pure orange juice. Dd never questioned it. I think you have to do whatever it takes to get it in tbh.

Squeezed · 06/03/2017 12:52

Good luck with it. Movicol has helped dd's constipation. She likes the taste, strange girl, which is fortunate as she also has toddler's diarrhoea so we can disguise medication in anything with sugar.

Thomasthetank456 · 06/03/2017 12:54

We put it in milk too. Others I have heard of put it in yoghurt and jelly. You might find movicol mummies group on Fb good there are lots of ideas on there.

Thingywhatsit · 06/03/2017 13:14

Wow! I didn't realise you could be so creative! Thank you all for the ideas! So I don't have to actually mix it with water and then disguise it, I can just mix with any liquid?

Thomas - I didn't think of searching Facebook, will have a look at that too.

Dd is a fussy thing and we are having major withholding issues. She has gone nearly 2 years of only pooing at night in her sleep as she wouldn't go in the day - usually every 2-4 days. Not as regular as I would like, but was normal for her. But she got a virus about a month ago and since then we have had major issues. Some days I can't leave the house as I darent even try and put her in the car seat and the last 2 nights we haven't had much sleep as she keep waking up screaming in pain. She won't take lactulose tried disguising that but she is having none of it - but has been ok with Senna. But Senna isn't getting the poo out on its own. We are now 6 days with no poo, she is hardly eating and in pain . 🙁🙁🙁🙁

I would say get some children glycerin suppositories to help her go without pain now especially as it's been 6 days

Etihad · 06/03/2017 13:41

DD has to have thickened drinks and the Movicol breaks the thickener down. The paediatrician said to add the movicol to food then give her the water. This works great

Etihad · 06/03/2017 13:43

But can curdle some things - like custard.

We had Cosomocol for a while - which is fruit flavoured. Same active ingredient as Movicol, just tastes a different sort of vile!

Thomasthetank456 · 06/03/2017 13:47

Some on the Facebook group said they had had good results with adding some coconut oil to dc milk and that this was helping them go. Could be worth a try.

Poorlybabysickday · 06/03/2017 14:00

I have put it in her milk for the last 2 years!

bringonyourwreckingball · 06/03/2017 14:02

Dd2 has hers in chocolate milk - not ideal but she doesn't like squash or fruit juice so this was the only way, and it's not forever

Poorlybabysickday · 06/03/2017 14:02

Poor baby I just read your update, it's so upsetting isn't it Sad

hazeyjane · 06/03/2017 14:10

Ds has never noticed it and he is unbelievably fussy and won't take any medication without a lot of distress.

I put movicol in cup first, add 100ml water, shake or use milk frother to mix in all bits. Leave until it is completely clear, then top up and add some apple squash.

chuffinalong · 07/03/2017 09:38

You can't put movicol in milk. We were told this by the bowel and bladder nurse. She might have have said you can mix with water then add milk? It was a long time ago, but you could look it up. 😊

Wonderpants · 07/03/2017 09:43

Cold apple juice drunk with a straw!
Aaaah I don't miss those days. I made it in jelly- doesn't work, mixed it into pancake mix- doesn't work!
But cold apple juice did! Obviously need a very special curly straw with it!

Lovewatchingrainfall · 07/03/2017 09:53

My little one has movicol and we mix it with milk, yoghurt or any thing with liquid. I did in the summer make it into ice cubes or ice lollies on the recommendation of the doctor.
I was told it's 1 sachet per 30mls of liquid. Hope this helps

Thingywhatsit · 07/03/2017 11:49

Well we had movement in the night - she was soooo distressed for about an hour it made me cry and then she produced the goods in huge measures! She is much happier this morning! Put movicol in her weetabix this morning - mixed it with a small amount of water first and then added it- she ate it so all good! Thank you for all your suggestions - much better than Drs suggestion of disguising it with a bit of squash!

chocolate spread, rice pudding (gotta be quick or it'll separate), yogurt (same) and with hearty bribes.

Tastes disgusting. Totally works. Worth the effort.
