How to disguise movicol

Thingywhatsit · 06/03/2017 12:29

Hi,

Dd (2.10) has just been prescribed movicol for poo issues ..... she is also on max dose of Senna which she will take (with bribes) but first lot of movicol wasn't a great success, mixed with some orange squash. Ended up spooning it into her with a choc button as a reward after every mouthful. She refused anymore after about two thirds.

Will have to try again this evening, so can you please give me your best tips on how to disguise it? I have no idea what to do other than put a bit of squash in which is what dr told me to do

Thanks

Hey, just a quick clarification for anyone that lands on here in the future. Movicol needs to be mixed with the correct amount of water (must be water) FIRST. It can then be mixed into any drink you like (smoothies, milk, juice etc). It needs to bind with the water to form the ‘medicine’ so to speak. If you don’t do this it won’t be as effective. I’m a doctor. Cheers. Ps it really does taste pretty awful. Poor kids.

Blackcurrant hides it better than orange

I mean it tastes salty and orange if drunk alone so blackcurrant does make sense as a way to hide it

This is an extremely old thread but in answer to the person who resurrected it. You can ask for chocolate flavour movicol or stick it in sugar free squash or anything she will drink

I agree with the vimto disguising it better than orange. My youngest will only drink milk or water though so I put some in the milk and some in a pint of water and she’ll drink it throughout the day.

Try it with sugar free vimto. It tastes pretty good. It goes with it much better than orange squash. It's better to have it in water rather than milk. It needs the water otherwise it won't be as effective.

Ideally if you can put in half unflavoured and half lemon and lime and a bit of sugar free Vimto it will taste pretty good. If you only have unflavoured then you will just need a higher concentration of the Vimto.

If she is on movicol she will probably need to take it for some time before things settle and she is regular again. So I would avoid getting into the habit of full sugar regular juices if you can.

Our doctor really didn’t like us putting it in milk because apparently it is less effective.

making it a couple of hours in advance and letting it sit in the refrigerator helps immensely. It gets much better dissolved. I’ve tried it and it makes a big difference.

Yes, it can basically go in any non-boiling liquid.

My little girl suffers with constipation and is a nightmare taking movicol can I mix it with her milk

We used to mix it into a fromage frais, or custard would work too I guess (can't remember if we tried that one!). Poor little thing, it's so rubbish. DS had them on and off from 6m to 6y. Fingers crossed he has finally grown out of it now.

He also loves "lucozade" squash from his dads lucozade sport bottle.

Forbidden drinks, which the baby is not allowed, often go down well.

Can you give her a little bowlful of the saltiest snack she will eat. She'll then be thirsty enough to drink a sachet of mivicol in something cold and sweet.

We put in milk- dissolve in 60ml water then add milk. Unfortunately 3 year old still having warm milk in bottle at bedtime but only reliable way to get the laxative down him. Rather that than 10 days of poo withholding.

I brought some strawberry and chocolate milkshakes as a very big enthusiastic treat from the shops and tried disguising in them - but she wasn't that bothered by them 🙁🙁🙁🙁 she loves an illicit slush puppy though so maybe I should take her out tomorrow and slip some movicol in it

I put some strawberry nesquick in the milk and make a fuss of how it is now special. Would she take that or other flavoured milk?

Defo try the ice cream soup. My DD has had it since she was about 6 months, so has always taken it in her milk. Good luck OP!

Ice cream sounds like a good plan - at this stage I would go with whatever she will eat. Hope it starts improving.

Help!!!! I need more ideas! We are on day 8 of no poo despite having 2 movicol and 10ml Senna a day - she is not wanting to eat anything other than m&m's 🙁🙁🙁🙁🙁 took her back to Drs today and they have said to increase up to 4 movicol until she is going daily. She has got clever to me putting it in her favourite treat drinks ( she usually only has water and isn't keen on squash. We made a smoothie together and put some "water" in it (laced with movicol) and she is refusing to drink it. She is refusing most food - including anything I could put some in. Would it work in ice cream soup? I.e. Melted ice cream? Can't think of what else I could put it in

chocolate spread, rice pudding (gotta be quick or it'll separate), yogurt (same) and with hearty bribes.

Tastes disgusting. Totally works. Worth the effort.

Well we had movement in the night - she was soooo distressed for about an hour it made me cry and then she produced the goods in huge measures! She is much happier this morning! Put movicol in her weetabix this morning - mixed it with a small amount of water first and then added it- she ate it so all good! Thank you for all your suggestions - much better than Drs suggestion of disguising it with a bit of squash!

My little one has movicol and we mix it with milk, yoghurt or any thing with liquid. I did in the summer make it into ice cubes or ice lollies on the recommendation of the doctor.
I was told it's 1 sachet per 30mls of liquid. Hope this helps

Cold apple juice drunk with a straw!
Aaaah I don't miss those days. I made it in jelly- doesn't work, mixed it into pancake mix- doesn't work!
But cold apple juice did! Obviously need a very special curly straw with it!

You can't put movicol in milk. We were told this by the bowel and bladder nurse. She might have have said you can mix with water then add milk? It was a long time ago, but you could look it up. 😊

Ds has never noticed it and he is unbelievably fussy and won't take any medication without a lot of distress.

I put movicol in cup first, add 100ml water, shake or use milk frother to mix in all bits. Leave until it is completely clear, then top up and add some apple squash.
