Hiya I'm a first time mum to a beautiful boy and need some help. Since birth every time he eats he is really unsettled and was being sick afterwards. He also hated being put down flat to sleep. He also has had gunky eye since birth. we went to the doctors who said he had conjunctivitis so gave drops and he said he sounded like he had reflux and colic so gave use gaviscon to put in his bottles we also used infacol with every feed it seemed to help for a couple of day with the quantity of sick but not the discomfort after eating e.g Tensing up ,legs pulled up, grunting and crying this was at 3 weeks old after a week I went back to the doctors also by this pointed when he was sleeping he stop breathing and then gasp for air and had blood in his poo twice. I thought I'd hit the jackpot when I got a female doctor thinking she will be more understanding but I was totally wrong. I explained to her what was going on she checked him over and said he was fine and that baby's are sick and they will cry and to deal with after braking down crying and getting no where with her I explained about his breathing and she said his lungs sounded fine and he wasn't doing it now so he was fine and that I should be speaking to my health visitor about all this. I did and she said go to the doctors. I truly had enough and walked out as she was not understanding at all and made out that I was a hypochondriac. I phoned my health visitor to come out and watch a feed to witch she did and she could see his was in really discomfort. She said to try colief so I did for a week and still it did work so I phoned the doctors and asked if it would be okay to change his milk to comfort and they said they couldn't see any harm. So he has been on comfort for a week and a half now and even though he doesn't bring his legs up and tense as much his still got the following symptoms ; Gulping air and coughing/spitting food out whilst feed
Tensing after feeds and making grunting noises and wriggling and throughing head back even when sitting up straight
Fleming/wezzing breathing
Sqwelling after feeding and random times through the day
Holding breath Tensing and going bright red and grunting numerous times of day
Gasping for air when sleeping
Sqwelling and grunting and wriggling about when put down to sleep and going bright red half hour after feed
Being sick hour / hour half after feeds
Hiccups all the time
Sneezing and coughing frequently
Blood in poo twice
Rashes on arms chest and neck
Rashes on side of head
Glupping alot after feeds
I feed him sitting up, i also keep him upright after feeds for 20 - 30 mins, I have put books underneath his moses basket, I have changed his Tits size, I burp him 3 times in a feed I have tried everything I can think of I have a doctors appointment on Tuesday again because I know something not right. Sorry about the long post just hoping some one can help me with handling all this and wondering if anyone else's baby was like this and what was the out come. Thanks you

Yeah I used to get 3 a time too. One 400 gram tub is a waste of time Hmm

These prescriptions are so stressful aren't they Flowers

Gileswithachainsaw · 01/02/2017 15:03

Hope you manage to pick it up without any hassle today. Really hoping your baby starts to feel better on it.

Hey got him the one tub of milk and asked for some more but got told I had to see if he had a reaction to it. They have gave me another tin to get through the weekend but I'm scared it won't last until I get another prescription on Monday for it. I have gave him 1 bottle of 8oz cos his a chunky monkey and likes his food so let's see if it starts to work for him. Hv was here to do a check up on him for his 6 weeks and even she said again there is something to do with his belly that's bothering him witch is good she can see it but his none stop cried since the milk. Maybe give him a bit less?

8oz is alot on top of having to adjust to a new milk

He will also take a few days to get the other milk out of his system so stick with it Flowers

NotAUserNumberSoNotATroll · 01/02/2017 17:37

So glad you've finally been given dairy free formula to try - fingers crossed it works for you.

My DS will be symptom free 4-5 days after milk exposure so hang in there.

tinajayne1993 · 01/02/2017 17:50

I will try and give him a bit less then and see how he is. Does anyone know what reactions I'm ment to look out for though cos I wasn't told what to look out for? Hopefully it will work. Thank you all for the advice xx

You could try goats formula milk for babies. He might be allergic to cows milk. It is pricey at £20 a tub make sure it's right for your baby. Ask your hv she will know about it. The throwing up is normal most babies do that. My 4th baby cried 3 hours a night for 6 weeks it was a tiring time. I did take him to see a cranial osteopath and it did help. The blood in his poo would worry me and I would be looking at what I was feeding him. You could give goats formula a try it is for those who can't drink cows milk.

mycavitiesareempty · 01/02/2017 21:23

Goats' milk is probably not a good idea as it cannot be tolerated by most with cows milk allergy. The proteins in it are too similar. 8oz of milk is really a lot for such a small chap. Could you try smaller more frequent feeds?

Good luck with the new milk. By reaction they probably mean "does he improve on it".

Heirhelp · 01/02/2017 21:34

I second 8oz being a lot especially if he is struggling to digest it. When my DD had a sickness bug at 7 1/2 the dr said to give as little as 2 oz of milk at a time.

If your little one is in pain he maybe comforting feeding so he is having more milk than he needs at a time and this is a vicious circle.

tinajayne1993 · 01/02/2017 21:55

Yeah I feel like he is. he woke up crying and doing his usual thing and then started wanting food. So I tried playing with him witch worked for a little bit and then put him in the bath for a while he went a 4 hour when he only usually goes 3 even though he screamed bloody murder when I took him out the bath cos he wanted his bottle then and there. so I'm going to try and distracted him more and hopefully this milk helps to stop him feeding cos his hungry. Got his weight and head and length done and they are all online together so that's one less thing to worry about. Xx

I would feed whenever he gives feeding cues but limit him to less milk at a time.

tinajayne1993 · 01/02/2017 22:06

I will try that tomorrow would you take it down a Oz at a time or just go down to certain number and persist with that number of oz

I'm sure I've read on here that reflux you babies constantly want to feed/suck as it's soothing.

I'd perhaps try to feed less Milk more often so if he usually feeds every 3 hours perhaps try feeding a bit before then so he's not hysterical and gulping it down and likely causing himself to be bloated and uncomfortable

So maybe try 2/3 Oz every 2.5 hours ? He's quite possibly used to feeding too much too often as a result of feeling crap.

Feeding him before he gets too hungry and tiding him over long enough to be able to distract him fir a bit might help break the cycle

laurzj82 · 01/02/2017 23:41

Oh this sounds very much like a dairy intolerance. My DD now nearly 3 had identical symptoms. Took 6 months of me pestering gp and hv for a diagnosis. I'm sorry but I haven't had time to RTFT so if you're breastfeeding then eliminate dairy for a couple of weeks to see if it helps. If not push Dr to let you trial a hypoallergenic milk. We had nutramigen first but no good but eventually got some neocate and I swear within 24 hours she was a different baby. All smiles and giggles. I felt terrible because I didn't know what was wrong and thought maybe i was neurotic and she'd just been a grumpy baby Sad

Some other medications that the dr can try to help with reflux are ranitidine and omeprezol. Luckily for us as soon as the neocate started we didn't need them anymore.

And luckily she also grew out of it by 2 Smile

You'll need to fight to get them to prescribe any of these due to funding cuts but keep badgering them until they help you. If GP is no good then you can get hv to refer you to paeds dietician instead

Good luck OP. Hope your DS feels better soon. Big unmumsnetty hugs because I know how hard it is Flowers

laurzj82 · 01/02/2017 23:43

Forgot to say also: if lots of fresh blood, straight to A&E. You will see paeds straight away and won't have to wait. Take the nappy if need be. They will definitely trial you on dairy free if you're ff.

laurzj82 · 01/02/2017 23:49

Sorry just seen through update. Nutramigen helped my DD to a degree. It depends how severe the allergy is. It might take a few days and he might only take a bit at a time because it tastes foul! He will get used to it. I found that although it helped, my DD still had some symptoms so we eventually got moved on to Neocate. Hope all goes well for you both OP

SurvivalOfTheUnfittest · 01/02/2017 23:52

Sorry you are going through this. I have had two refluxers and it sounds so very familiar, including the constant dismissals from health professionals. I tried a dummy - if my sons were hungry a dummy didn't work, but often they just fell asleep with it and wanted comfort, not milk. The more milk you give, the worse the reflux can be, the more crying you get and the more milk you give. Babies with reflux can sometimes comfort feed.

Gileswithachainsaw · 02/02/2017 07:34

How did the night go Brew

tinajayne1993 · 02/02/2017 08:23

I do try a dummy first and see if it just that he want something to sick on for comfort before I feed him. Last night he was up a couple of times through the night but tried the dummy thing and it worked and got us through to this morning.. he was not happy with just 3 oz though so I gave him 5 Oz still not happy but alot more manageable so will try and stick to it even when he was born he was taking 3 / 4 Oz . Now for the poo game as he has just pooed right after his food oh the joys. I can tell the reflux is still bothering him but he seems a bit calmer today don't know if that's a placebo affect or if the milk for me haa. Thank you everyone for your advice. X

For how much milk then you know you baby best.

Your little one may have milk allergy and reflux. Once you are in the correct milk you can address the reflux issue.

I hope this works out for you.

tinajayne1993 · 02/02/2017 12:08

Hopefully his got his check up for 6 weeks on Monday even though he will be 7 weeks then. So he will be on the milk for 5 days so then will ask about his reflux cos when ever he is swallowing when his not eating he crys straight after it so think that is to do with his reflux even though his sick has stopped he still has little bits of sick but what I expect from a normal baby.. it feels like it's never ending with him but his seems to fall asleep and be in a deep sleep the now so hopefully the milk is helping him. Thank you again for everyone's advice it has helped me so much.. xxx

Glad to hear there's been an improvement. Smile

Hopefully the reflux can be gotten under control when you go today and you can fully enjoy a much happier ds Flowers

HorridHenryrule · 06/02/2017 20:13

I think you should on the day he does a stool that has blood in it. Take a sample to the doctor so they can test it. You will hopefully find out what's going on a lot faster.
