Hiya I'm a first time mum to a beautiful boy and need some help. Since birth every time he eats he is really unsettled and was being sick afterwards. He also hated being put down flat to sleep. He also has had gunky eye since birth. we went to the doctors who said he had conjunctivitis so gave drops and he said he sounded like he had reflux and colic so gave use gaviscon to put in his bottles we also used infacol with every feed it seemed to help for a couple of day with the quantity of sick but not the discomfort after eating e.g Tensing up ,legs pulled up, grunting and crying this was at 3 weeks old after a week I went back to the doctors also by this pointed when he was sleeping he stop breathing and then gasp for air and had blood in his poo twice. I thought I'd hit the jackpot when I got a female doctor thinking she will be more understanding but I was totally wrong. I explained to her what was going on she checked him over and said he was fine and that baby's are sick and they will cry and to deal with after braking down crying and getting no where with her I explained about his breathing and she said his lungs sounded fine and he wasn't doing it now so he was fine and that I should be speaking to my health visitor about all this. I did and she said go to the doctors. I truly had enough and walked out as she was not understanding at all and made out that I was a hypochondriac. I phoned my health visitor to come out and watch a feed to witch she did and she could see his was in really discomfort. She said to try colief so I did for a week and still it did work so I phoned the doctors and asked if it would be okay to change his milk to comfort and they said they couldn't see any harm. So he has been on comfort for a week and a half now and even though he doesn't bring his legs up and tense as much his still got the following symptoms ; Gulping air and coughing/spitting food out whilst feed
Tensing after feeds and making grunting noises and wriggling and throughing head back even when sitting up straight
Fleming/wezzing breathing
Sqwelling after feeding and random times through the day
Holding breath Tensing and going bright red and grunting numerous times of day
Gasping for air when sleeping
Sqwelling and grunting and wriggling about when put down to sleep and going bright red half hour after feed
Being sick hour / hour half after feeds
Hiccups all the time
Sneezing and coughing frequently
Blood in poo twice
Rashes on arms chest and neck
Rashes on side of head
Glupping alot after feeds
I feed him sitting up, i also keep him upright after feeds for 20 - 30 mins, I have put books underneath his moses basket, I have changed his Tits size, I burp him 3 times in a feed I have tried everything I can think of I have a doctors appointment on Tuesday again because I know something not right. Sorry about the long post just hoping some one can help me with handling all this and wondering if anyone else's baby was like this and what was the out come. Thanks you

I breastfed so I eliminated all dairy from my diet but my DS is weaned now and he'll get all the symptoms again if he has anything with milk in
The HV said it's unusual to be so sensitive to dairy in breast milk as it's already been broken down but it was definitely that....I gave up with my GP as she said I was an over anxious first time mum with a colicky baby Hmm

Heirhelp · 28/01/2017 08:31

It took me a while to figure that there was something wrong with my baby (reflux) and a few trips to the doctors to get the right thing.

It is so hard being a first time Mum, especially when they are so little. You are doing an amazing job. Well done.

cariboo · 28/01/2017 08:41

This sounds like an allergy. Can you try breastfeeding or is that no longer an option? Otherwise, go to the pharmacy and ask for a hypoallergenic formula. You need to see a paediatrician who can then refer you to a paediatric allergist. My son was allergic too, so have been down this road. It!s important to stop these allergic reactions because they will become increasingly worse, with anaphylaxis being the worst case scenario. Anaphylaxis is deadly, and it's also fast. I don't want to frighten you, but you must stop feeding your baby formula he's allergic to.

mycavitiesareempty · 28/01/2017 08:50

Cariboo that's a bit alarmist! Most cows milk intolerance is not an anaphylaxis-type allergy and most children do outgrow it eventually.

If he has blood in his poo though that is not good. And I agree he does need a hypo formula. Go try one of these and see the doc on tuesday.

Hope it improves soon :(

cariboo · 28/01/2017 09:04

Yes, it's alarmist but necessary. Apparently I was allergic to formula as a baby and back then, my parents went through hell trying to figure out why I was so sick. Food allergies were virtually unknown at the time. I developed food allergies which I've been saddled with all my life, with anaphylactic reactions to all legumes, with peanuts being the most severe.

Loraline · 28/01/2017 09:28

You've been given some great ideas and advice here to talk to your doctor about. Just wondering if you have anyone you can bring with you to the appointment, to help you stay strong and be an advocate for you? It's so easy to feel uncertain and emotional so an impartial friend or family member might help you if you need to be insistent

SaorAlbaGuBrath · 28/01/2017 09:38

That describes exactly the symptoms DS2 had when he was tiny, it was CMPA (cows milk protein allergy). GPs can be reluctant to believe it, keep pushing. Ask for nutramigen or neocate formula on prescription and see if that helps.

tinajayne1993 · 28/01/2017 13:50

Thank you so much for all the advice I now don't feel like I am crazy. I cant breast feed as my milk has dried up so gona go and get some of the milk people have recommended is it okay to keep changing formular though? and also see the doctor. I have no one only my partner but I wouldn't let him come with me as he will lose his cool and then we will defo get no where. His just had 5 Oz which isn't like him and he still has all the symptoms I just don't want him to associate feeding with pain and stop eating cos of it or stop eating as much cos of it.

tinajayne1993 · 28/01/2017 13:57

His also been constipated today it was just like a ball but whilst he was pushing and after he was being sick but it was clear fluid and I feed him after and his only took 5 Oz of his bottle and still doing what he usually does afterwards. X

Do you have a walk in clinic near you?

I think I'd be tempted to try it tbh.

Sure I'll get flamed fir that but you don't seem to he having any luck with the Dr's and the HV can be next to useless.

Mine were of the hot steamy room ajd three hourly feed school of thought so doesn't matter if the heads falling off that's all they seem to have to say.

I'd say you had nothing to lose by trying. Really sounds like you need that prescription poor thing. I remember getting Dr's in hospital to look at dd. Tiny five ajd a half pounder. With a stomach the size of a football and apparently that was "normal" Hmm

tinajayne1993 · 29/01/2017 08:24

Thanks for all the advice.no just A&E I'm trying not to go there as I don't want to waste there time when the doctor should of sorted this out when I went to them. He seems to be getting worse though with him being uncomfortable so I might be taking a trip to A&E. X

Heirhelp · 29/01/2017 10:02

Gaviscon and comfort milk both work by thickening the milk and so cause constipation.

I would be avoiding a and e as you will have to wait ages and you will be exposed to lots of 'germs'. Ring 111 or however you arrange to see out of hours gp in your area. I believe they will give you an appointment to see the GP if you child is under 6 months.

Write down the list of symptoms and say you think it is is Cow milk allergy or possibly reflux or both and you want to be perscribed alternative milk.

abigfuckinghohoho · 30/01/2017 17:41

Sounds like dd as a baby she has a cows milk protein intoleranceFlowers

BarbarianMum · 30/01/2017 18:04

Ds1 had cow's milk protein allergy. It started out like this then got worse (hives on contact with milk at 6 months).

tinajayne1993 · 31/01/2017 13:49

This is what I'm thinking now. I'm sitting in the doctors right now and getting so nervous they are just going to just say it a baby thing. I will let everyone know how it goes.. thank you so much for all the advice.. xxx

Gileswithachainsaw · 31/01/2017 14:13

Good luck Flowers

BabyHaribo · 31/01/2017 14:36

How did you get on?

Sounds like cows milk protein allergy (CMPA) to me.

Google 'is it cows milk protein allergy?' There's a good website but I can't link as on phone. Also a couple of good Facebook groups of you are on there.

Keep persevering with GP a lot of people including myself got fobbed off and take a while to get an actual diagnosis.

Good luck - it will get better I promise

tinajayne1993 · 31/01/2017 18:14

Hiya went to doctors went through the list and she said sounded like reflux and to go back on to first milk and gaviscon which I explained he worse on that then he is with the comfort and that I point blank refuse to put him on something that makes him worse. She just kept going on about reflux which I don't doubt he has but she won't prescribe anything else but gaviscon for him and the gaviscon and the comfort milk are to thick when put together. So I then explained I think he might have a milk allergy she said she didn't think so cos of his poo even though I explained he had blood in his poo twice. She was very hesitate and finally said she would phone my health visitor who would get in touch with a dietician to see about changing his milk. A hour later my hv phoned and explained to me that the doctor had phoned her and my hv agreed to try the milk and said to go back to the doctor as she has prescribed me it. So went and got the prescription but the chemist has to order it in and won't be in till 4pm tomorrow which I am gutted about but nothing I can do about it. The milk she has put him on is nutramigen 1. Does anyone have reviews on this milk? My hv said too try it for 2 weeks and see..

Heirhelp · 31/01/2017 18:29

I am glad you are getting some where. Maybe start a new thread with the name of the new milk and then put a link in to this thread.

tinajayne1993 · 31/01/2017 18:41

Hiya I have done now thank you for your advice.. x

Gileswithachainsaw · 31/01/2017 20:08

I really hope the milk works for you. The aptimil pepti was a godsend my dd was a different baby almost instantly.

I hope to hear news of a much happier baby very soon Flowers

tinajayne1993 · 31/01/2017 20:27

The only thing is he goes through 900g within 6 day and I noticed on my prescription the box is only for 400g so I'm a bit worried we will run out before I can get a new prescription for it as it's not on repeat yet.. xx

OP posts:
mycavitiesareempty · 31/01/2017 20:34

That's a bit crap of them isn't it? We used to get 3 tubs at a time on script, and they were big 'uns. I'd contact the surgery again as the script is not in line with the advice to try it for 2 weeks.

tinajayne1993 · 31/01/2017 21:06

Yeah my partner will pick it up tomorrow so just gona phone up and explain that it won't last him that long and can i have a couple of tubs so it can't get us to 2 weeks and then have a review about it I know they want save on waste prescription but he need more to get him use to it. X

OP posts:
mycavitiesareempty · 31/01/2017 22:20

Of course he does. If he has milk allergy it's going to take about 2 weeks for the proteins to be out of his system. GPs can be very in the dark about milk allergy, it's not a very widely acknowledged issue although it is actually relatively common among formula-fed babies.

I hope you'll see a difference a lot sooner than 2 weeks, but don't worry if not - if he has been badly CMPI-ed then his digestive tract will be a bit stressed and it'll take a while for it to go back to normal.
