I have moved this to child health board as I don't think aibu is appropriate anymore.
What began as a quick question has become 2 now 3
The support on these threads has highlighted the best qualities of mumsnet and I am so grateful to every lovely person who has supported me so far! Thanks

I hope you can stay calm and super assertive, it gives me the rage that we have to be advocates in this way as it shouldn't be necessary

SlightlyCrumpled · 18/04/2016 16:15

Crossed post. It is a very busy ward & some of the children in their are very acutely ill do it can be a wait. You will see countless junior doctors before the consultant comes along. I have to say the peadiatricians are generally lovely but you will feel as though you are repeating yourself. Used to drive me nuts, but have gotten used to it now.

No excuse for not reading the letter / email / fax that the previous hospital had sent. So incredibly frustrating for you all!

Therealloislane · 18/04/2016 16:15

Hopefully this appointment will have a positive outcome for you & little Mae.

littlemaemae · 18/04/2016 16:16

I am trying to stay calm. I think we have spent all of our emotional energy and at the end of our tethers.
I overheard him on the phone and it seems the issue is because it has been labelled 'chronic constipation' they are going down the line of treating that but it is much more, it's why she has this and how to resolve that. Getting the impaction out is a very small part of the problem.

Keep on Hun until you get what you need and want!!!

VagueIdeas · 18/04/2016 16:20

Why do Leicester think this is chronic constipation? What the hell did your local hospital tell them when they made the referral?

TheoriginalLEM · 18/04/2016 16:20

AngryAngryAngry i was really hoping today was going to be a positive step forward for you.

i am outraged on your behalf.

am thinking could you start another thread on how to kick up merry hell until you get somewhere. who to speak to etc.

loathe to suggest this as i personally couldn't afford it but could you seek a private consultation? straw clutching really and maybe we could rally to help towards a consultation from folks on this thread. id happily contribute although can't afford much , it all would mount up.

how DARE they be so lackadaisical about this.

MrsNutella · 18/04/2016 16:21

Oh no! I'm so sorry that you're having such an awful time.

I've got nothing to suggest except that perhaps this is why Leicester hasn't been in a rush to get DD seen perhaps it's time to consider another hospital and push for a proper investigation for DD?

Poor DD. I hope she is ok Sad

Headofthehive55 · 18/04/2016 16:24

I agree getting it out is only part of the problem. Chronic constipation, is quite a challenge to deal with.
Bless her. X

rumbleinthrjungle · 18/04/2016 16:33

Um, what exactly do they think the previous hospital team were doing for a week plus with several serial hospitalisations? Stupid suggestion and not one that inspires confidence right when you needed some Angry

Hang in there love. Thanks

littlemaemae · 18/04/2016 16:33

Right, I will try to have a positive attitude and wait for the next doctor. Will be assertive and discuss the future not the past and justify why medication hasn't worked. They have the discharge note and her X-rays so I'm not getting into that.
We will see.... Fingers crossed for some sensible suggestions to come!

skinoncustard · 18/04/2016 16:39

Is it only random women ( mainly) that can see that a young child who hasn't passed a poo for 6 weeks ,(and has a long history of poo problems) is swollen, lethargic, been in hospital for a week , had 3 enemas, X-ray, a NG tube, a course of Kleenprep and been transferred to another hospital is not just constipated!!!!!!!! AngryAngry

skinoncustard · 18/04/2016 16:43

You are amazing Littlemae ! I think I would have been arrested by now for GBH!

littlemaemae · 18/04/2016 16:44

I am not minimising chronic constipation at all, sorry if it came across like that. I just meant that the treatment isn't working so they need to look at if from a new angle z

OP posts:
VagueIdeas · 18/04/2016 16:51

Of course you're not minimising, but this isn't chronic constipation. It just isn't.

You know the NICE guidelines for chronic constipation list several "red flags" which warrant further investigation? I bet your DD has a few of those. I'll hunt for the link.

Badders123 · 18/04/2016 16:53

I am utterly horrified that this is still going on.
wonders where all the posters in the first thread who defended this treatment are!???
If I were you op I would be hot footing it to another hospital! I know that seems a huge pain, but really...could it be any worse that where you are now? :(
Poor poor baby.
I have no experience of Leicester (but have not heard good things) but I have sadly had lots of dealings with Derby Royal. Maybe ask for a transfer there?

Youarentkiddingme · 18/04/2016 16:53

I would suggest the answer to "have you tried to go back to ...l." Is " it didn't work and the problem worsened resulting in admission. What evidence is there that it will work again and if she finally passes a stool after 6/7 weeks she won't get constipated again"

DeputyPecksBentBeak · 18/04/2016 16:55

Oh god I've just come across this. I remember your first thread and hoped it would all be sorted by now Thanks I hope the next few days are better for you all

Badders123 · 18/04/2016 16:55

Sadly the NHS now seems to wait until the person is acutely unwell and in need of surgical intervention rather than treat the cause of the chronic problem...I have had experience of this with myself and family members :(

Badders123 · 18/04/2016 16:55

Has any dr mentioned mega colon or toxic colon to you?

VagueIdeas · 18/04/2016 16:57

Here you go Smile

skinoncustard · 18/04/2016 16:57

I am sorry if I have caused you any further stress Littlemae. I was referring to the new doctor suggesting you might like to try movicol and Senna for your DD 's constipation . Hmm
Flowers xx

VagueIdeas · 18/04/2016 17:01

Just to reiterate, it says that the presence of "red flag" symptoms means the child should not be treated for chronic constipation. Instead, "refer them urgently to a healthcare professional with experience in the specific aspect of child health that is causing concern".

Hopefully this will be happening, once you see the surgeon.

Headofthehive55 · 18/04/2016 17:02

The chronic constipation is a symptom, there may be a cause that can be found and treated. Or you may find the cause but are unable to treat. We know the cause, for our DD but there is no real treatment, so the symptom remains.

I do hope they can help you.

peggyundercrackers · 18/04/2016 17:06

im not surprised you are raging - I think I would have had the doc by the scruff of the neck I would have been so angry. It is absolutely shocking they have not moved this forward. I think you need to go and speak to the complaints people and start making a bit of noise about how long it is taking.

good luck!
