Dd (2.5) is waking up with a swollen/puffy face

For the second morning dd has woken up with a puffy or swollen face. Her cheeks and eyes are puffed up.

Not sure what it can be. It went down slowly yesterday, by late afternoon it was back to normal. But now it is back.

Is it worth a GP appointment?

Feather pillow?? Or new bedding?

Awellboiledicicle · 08/04/2015 09:42

Nope, same bedding and no feathers. Dh us asthmatic so no feathers in the house.

Doctors appt as sounds like allergy, my dd has facial swelling a lot and is on daily cetrizine for unknown allergies, she usually swells at night. It's the start if hay fever season so it could be that x

BikeRunSki · 08/04/2015 20:58

Hay fever?

LifeIsBetterInFlipFlops · 08/04/2015 21:07

Yes, I'd say hay-fever too; my DS's face resembles a puff-adder from Easter to August.

Awellboiledicicle · 08/04/2015 21:15

Well despite regular piriton today, it got worse. I managed to get her to a walk in clinic. Doctor said it was probably either an allergy or possibly slapped cheek.

He said to keep giving her the piriton. Not that it seems to be helping.

If piriton doesn't work ask for cetrizine, piriton doesn't work on my dd but cetrizine does

Mumps? Mine had it despite having had the MMR jab

Box5883284322679964228 · 08/04/2015 23:17

Which part of the cheek

bridgetsmummy · 08/04/2015 23:25

When my son was 2 he had these symptoms. Every morning it looked like he'd gone 10 rounds with Mike Tyson, swollen eyes and puffy face. Dr said same as you, but it kept happening.
One day in the bath we noticed his stomach was distended and looked veiny iykwim. We took him back to gp and she asked for a urine sample. Not the easiest thing to get, involved lying with him on sofa with sample pot over his willy Smile.
Got one eventually, GP even called to make sure we got one so was concerned. Took sample to gp and she tested it for protein.
Levels v high so we were sent straight to hospital where he was diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome.
It's a condition where the kidneys don't process the protein levels properly and one of the symptoms is the swelling.
Anyway, he was in hospital for a week and was treated with steroids to which he responded really well .
He was weaned off the steroids and was clear about 3months later.
He had one relapse about 6months afterwards but again responded well to the steroid treatment. He has been clear now for nearly 9 years so has likely grown out of it. It's v unusual to get a relapse after about 5 years clear.

So, while I hope that your dd doesn't have this and it's something much easier to explain, as soon as I read your op it came back to me and might be something worth keeping in mind.

Please ask if you have any questions

Hugs xxx

as bridgetsmummy says really

go to gp today and insist on a urine test for protein as well as a general checkup. it will just rule it out.

sanfairyanne · 09/04/2015 09:22

thats great that your child had just the one relapse and is all clear bridgetsmummy Smile

bridgetsmummy · 09/04/2015 09:35

Yeah, thanks Sanfairy. We were lucky that way, he's 11 now and fit as a fiddle thankfully.
For the first couple of years we checked his urine twice a week, the phrase "time to pee in the pot" was well used GrinGrinGrin

Do you have experience with it?

sanfairyanne · 09/04/2015 09:49

yeah, we are 10 years in now but no relapses for last 2 years altho he still spills sometimes. theres a few of us on mumsnet around somewhere Smile

sallysparrow157 · 09/04/2015 10:18

As others have said, definitely worth getting the gp to dip her urine to rule out nephrotic syndrome. It's a nice easy test and if the dipstick shows there's no protein it rules it out, but it's something that would definitely need treatment
Most of the cases I've seen were initially diagnosed as allergies, but that's cos allergies are very common and Nephrotic syndrome is quite rare

Awellboiledicicle · 09/04/2015 10:23

Walk in clinic doctor was quite dismissive of me. Still no appointments at my doctor. Her cheeks aren't hot and red today, but still puffed up.

sallysparrow157 · 09/04/2015 10:29

You could give your doctors receptionist a ring and say you would like your daughter's urine dipsticked for protein, say you've been seen by the walk in clinic but you've been told about nephrotic syndrome and want it ruled out. If you take a wee sample in, the gp or practice nurse could dip it In between patients, then if it's clear you don't need to worry, if it has lots of protein in the gp will have to see her but the diagnosis is already made

bridgetsmummy · 09/04/2015 10:52

agree with the others, definitely get urine dipped, it only takes a couple of minutes and would either rule it out or give you the answer

sanfairyanne · 09/04/2015 10:52

sorry to hear that Sad
as sallysparrow says, its a really quick test. if you take a sample with you, it will just take a literal second to be dipstick tested

Box5883284322679964228 · 09/04/2015 10:53

Which part of cheeks? Is it closer to the jaw line or eyes

Awellboiledicicle · 09/04/2015 17:22

Nearer her eyes. It's made her eyes go a funny shape.

OP posts:
sanfairyanne · 09/04/2015 18:38

don't delay a urine test, will the nurse do it if you explain? or back to walk in centre but take a sample with you.

Awellboiledicicle · 09/04/2015 19:50

Yeah. I failed to "catch" one this afternoon. She's still in nappies, which makes it more challenging. Going to try in morning

TeddyBear5 · 09/04/2015 19:53

My dd had this and she was dehydrated. It went down within hours once we upped the fluids massively. (Hot country at the time)

sanfairyanne · 10/04/2015 11:08

how was she this morning?
