Am current sat in a and e with my 5 day old. This morning there was small amounts of blood in her vomit all obs seem fine but blood tests have shown that she has low salt levels more tests are being run not sure what I'm writing this for. Never expected to be in a hospital situation so soon :(

Oh I'm sorry. How hard for you, when you should just be at home recovering from the birth and enjoying your new baby Sad

Can't help with any medical knowledge, but just posting to sympathise, and hope they find out what's up, and of course that it's nothing serious. Hope you both get home soon.

And Congratulations on your new dd!

MonkeySeeMonkeyDooo · 23/02/2015 16:31

Are you breastfeeding? Are your nipples cracked and bleeding as sometimes babies swallow it and it shows in their vomit.

Hope your baby is ok though.

StillinShockAhhhhhhh · 23/02/2015 16:32

It's horrible seeing her in the huge hospital bed just want to take my baby home

Are you breastfeeding and do you have cracked nipples. I had this with ds and it was just blood from me he had drank whilst feeding.
Fingers crossed for you that it all turns out ok.

StillinShockAhhhhhhh · 23/02/2015 16:33

She's formula fed, paediatrician doesn't think the two are related and is more concerned about the salt level than the blood in her vomit

Cross post with Monkey.

Oh what a horrible shock for you; hope you're being well looked after. Thinking of you Flowers

Millionairerow · 23/02/2015 17:27

Did you have a c section? Sometimes they don't clear their airways if not delivered vaginally. My dd3 did this it I had a c.

StillinShockAhhhhhhh · 23/02/2015 17:41

No she was born vaginally they aren't concerned about the blood in her vomit but are concerned about the salt levels they are admitting her overnight for observation and more tests

Sorry to hear this - my youngest DS threw up blood as a newborn whilst we were still in hospital and they weren't concerned either.

It must be so so worrying for you but you are in the right place Flowers

Koalafications · 23/02/2015 17:49

Sorry to hear this, OP.

I hope you are ok, must be scary for you. Have you asked them what they are concerned about? Or what does low salt levels indicate? Don't be scared to ask any questions, write them down if it helps.

Do you have family that can bring you some clothes etc?

JammyGeorge · 23/02/2015 21:12

I don't know about vomiting but my friends DS had bright red blood in his nappys. She switched the brand of formula and it stopped. They were horrified at first as well (as I would of been) and took him straight to hospital.

PotteringAlong · 24/02/2015 00:10

How's things? Hope you have a decent night.

StillinShockAhhhhhhh · 24/02/2015 04:32

DH is here with me and DM went and collected us some clothes more nappies etc, she's been put on a sodium supplement and having 2 hourly obs, oxygen levels are 100% heart rate normal, trace blood in her urine, just have to wait now for more tests in the morning, all seems so unfair she's so tiny and only 5 days old she should be at home with us not in hospital :(

Well done you for taking her in. Try & rest when you can & write any questions down you want to ask at the doctors round.

StillinShockAhhhhhhh · 24/02/2015 09:58

I think the scariest thing is the results they are worried about are completely unrelated to the problem we brought her in for and we wouldn't have known there was anything to worry about if it wasn't for the blood

OP posts:
Theboxtrollsareallowed · 24/02/2015 13:06

How are you all doing? Have they got any results for you yet? Hope you are managing to enjoy lots of cuddles still.

StillinShockAhhhhhhh · 24/02/2015 13:23

Dr hasn't even made it to us on her 'morning' rounds yet. Dd seems settled and content clearly she didn't get the memo she's meant to be poorly! All obs are completely normal just gt to wait for Dr to redo blood tests and actually update us on what's going on

Hope you get answers soon. Thinking of you -

Arcticbunny · 24/02/2015 14:18

Hope there's some news for you?? So slow waiting for answers...
My DS vomited gunky bloody stuff after a long labour and it also showed he had low salt levels. He was a poor feeder (I was breastfeeding) and lost too much weight and got jaundiced. He ended up in special care for a few days being monitored and he was fine. interestingly the doctors were most concerned about the low salt but they never got to the bottom of it before it rectified itself...
Hope that gives you some peace of mind and that you soon get some answers. Take care x

StillinShockAhhhhhhh · 24/02/2015 15:18

Thank you all for your support! She has been allowed home with a sodium supplement and she has to go bk on Thursday for another blood test to see if that has helped. Been a stressful few days! Really does help hearing other people have had similar experiences with positive outcomes just hoping now the blood test on Thursday comes out with a better result than yesterday's
