A title that people can read would help , so I am trying again as I really need a place to pace .

My 8 yr old D's has had a headache for over a week and my gp has suggested he has an eye test to rule that out before doing more tests .

So for background , our first son died after we were told he had a cold and all was OK so understandably I am a wee bit of an anxious worrying mess about anything medical with my children .

Anyway , saw Dr yesterday , saw optician today who said that his eye sight is worse since we had a routine test six months ago , also his colour recognition was hit and miss .
I rang gp and left a message for Dr to ring me when she is back in tomorrow to discuss . I then got a call later in the day to say that an appt has been made for 11 am tomorrow .

I am trying very very hard to keep things together and a place to pace about would be very handy .

If you have got this far then thank you
If you have any advice that would be fab
A hand would also be welcome .

Aaaarrrrggghhhhh !!

No advice but here's my hand.

It must be terribly hard not to worry all the time.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

... And I'm sure it's nothing.

Please let us know what the doc says x

HowLongTillBedtime · 18/06/2014 20:04

Thank you , all hands welcome .

I hate being this person , I hate knowing the what its and maybes and that actually sometimes the worst things happen and there is bugger all you can do about it .

Oh God op!

I've just re read my post and it could read like your loss was 'nothing'!

Mortified. Of course I meant that I'm sure the headaches are nothing.

Jesus I'm clumsy. Been out in the sun too much today I think. Hmm

Ooops , I honestly didn't read it as anything other than you being lovely .

Hi, I'm an eye specialist , it doesn't sound worrying.

Usually the scarey things an optician can see are quite obvious and they would have sent you straight to hospital.

May hopefully just be the headache is caused by the worsening prescription.

Completely understand why you are worried with your older son passing away.

Hope all is ok.

insanityscatching · 18/06/2014 20:51

So sorry for your loss you are bound to be anxious. If I can reassure you at all about your ds's sight, at dd's last eye test 9 months after her previous one she needed a stronger prescription by plus 1 in one eye and plus .5 in the other. The optician didn't say it was concerning but recommend we return in six months so as to catch her before a big jump in prescription. Hopefully the new prescription will sort out the headaches.

HowLongTillBedtime · 18/06/2014 20:56

Thank you helensburgh , tbh I don't think it is his eyes , the headaches he is describing are at the back and the middle , and he isn't light sensitive at all so not a migraine type heafdache . I know I am just going to have to go through the process and second guessing won't do me any good but it is just so hard . I am honestly normally quite laid back about things and I nimble along quite nicely but something about this just sounds scary .

It is hard for me to work out what is a thing to be worried about and a thing to freak out about . My judgement is buggered .

HowLongTillBedtime · 18/06/2014 20:59

Sorry insanity x posted , he doesn't have or need glasses ATM , it is just the way they are telling me I have done the right thing by bringing him in and something is amiss but they don't know what yet .

I was honestly expecting baby pat on the head and the virus excuse .

insanityscatching · 18/06/2014 21:09

It must be so difficult to keep calm but it's good that they haven't dismissed your concerns and you will know more tomorrow about what they are considering. One step at a time, try and concentrate on that for now and hopefully it will keep a lid on the panic you must be feeling.
I would also say that if the optician had spotted something nasty he would have sent you straight to hospital as mine did when he spotted swelling on my optic nerve and even that turned out to be nothing and had disappeared by my third hospital appointment.

Trooperslane · 18/06/2014 22:39

Thank you, how.

HowLongTillBedtime · 19/06/2014 11:57

We have been to see the gp and she is doing an urgent referral to paeds , not the two week turnaround really scary one but the next level down .

I am keeping my fingers crossed it is a virus and buggers off before we even get the appt through .

But until then I will just have to keep pacing about and trying not to drive everyone mad ......

insanityscatching · 19/06/2014 16:32

Sending you all good wishes and hope the referral comes through quickly but ds has recovered long before then anyway.

MrsKCastle · 19/06/2014 17:06

Thinking of you, Howlong. I saw your first thread and had been wondering how it went at the opticians.

How is your DS doing? Is he in a lot of pain, or is it more rof a cconstant background ache? I take it nothing has changed for him lifestyle wise, he's not having more screen time than normal or anything like that?

(I'm sure you've thought about everything that could be causing it so apologies if I'm asking the obvious).

HowLongTillBedtime · 19/06/2014 19:44

Thank you both , the headache is at the back and middle of his head so screen time , dehydration doesn't seem to effect it . Painkillers are making little difference but it isn't a really bad pain , just a constant ache which feels worse if jolted .

OP posts:
PJ67 · 19/06/2014 22:21

Hi not sure if this is similar as I'm obviously an adult but I have had a constant headache for the past 3 days and have taken paracetamol, naproxen and another stronger painkiller and it doesn't make one bit of difference. I don't get migraines so am wondering if it's a viral thing. I have read that some viral headaches can last a few weeks so hopefully he'll be better before the appt comes through.

birdsnotbees · 19/06/2014 22:28

Hello, I didn't want to read and run. Our family has had a horrible virus recently - I had a headache for 3 weeks straight, nothing touched it and I was getting to the point where I thought something was seriously wrong. And then it cleared (took me 6 weeks to get over the virus properly). Both my kids have also had headaches, though not as bad or for as long as me.

It was as you describe it: not too bad but bad enough, constant ache, felt worse when I bent down and then got up quickly, painkillers did nothing.

Really hope that's all it is, and hope this is of some comfort (I know it's probably not). Thinking of you, and so so sorry for the loss of your eldest son. Sending unMumsnetty hugs x

Helenc19 · 21/06/2014 10:29

I experienced headaches a few years ago which werent helped by painkillers, turned out it was hayfever causing them even though i didnt really have anu other symptoms and antihistamines helped so trying those might be worth a go. Hope he feeling better soon.

HowLongTillBedtime · 22/06/2014 18:42

Helenc19 , thank you , what you said made sense to me , I have an older son who suffers massively with hay fever so I have tried the 8 yr old today with antihistamines , he said it has helped !

Now I don't know if he is trying to please or whether it really is a help but I am keeping everything crossed .

OP posts:
Helenc19 · 22/06/2014 22:16

Thats great, fingers crossed for him :-)

HowLongTillBedtime · 23/06/2014 19:28

Well so far no difference with the anti histamines which is frustrating but I am thinking it won't do any harm to carry on for another day or two .......

It might take a wee while to build up ?

Aaarrrggghhh !
