She has never liked us wiping her since a baby and now she's three she hates us washing her down there. It does look red sometimes and I took her to the docs who suggested not cleaning it so much and perhaps she's 'sensitive' down there. She hates us wiping it says it hurts. Health visitor said the same. Any advice please? X

My doctor suggested putting my DD in a bath with 4 tablespoons if baking soda several times a day for two days to help with irritation from soap/bubble bath. Worked like a charm.

quiltmum · 15/12/2013 07:23

When my DD was small and occasionally sore (from not properly wiping the drips off when she weed) we used weleda nappy cream on her.

Natural yogurt is good for thrush, eaten, and externally. How much water does she drink? Is her wee very acidic and strong?

Good luck

mandmsmummy · 15/12/2013 14:12

Thanks again all, seems a common thing!

She doesnt like water but drinks loads of squash. Might give orange squash a wide birth for a while and start diluting more! Could this be the problem? x

My DD age 7 is sometimes waking crying at night with sore front bottom which is red and angry. Several trip's to GP most recently advised all the usual plenty to drink no soap advice, drying drips of wee very thoroughly by blotting it on toilet paper. He said if it's sore enough to wake her she had a burn from the urea and needs calpol. I queried calpol, but he said no, the pain will be so intense by then that the showering down we have to do (at 3am!) will not fix it alone. Often strikes after long car rides to visit family, possibly drinks even less than usual while on the road and in other houses. Have considered thrust and worms and grandma's different washing powder. Looking forward to the day she has a bit more estrogen and a bit more natural moisture down there and i can worry about other things.

fusspot66 · 15/12/2013 14:27

Thrush not thrust

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 15/12/2013 14:33

My friend gets thrush set off by loads of things one of which is orange squash!
I have so much sympathy for your dd as I get during and after every single period.

bonzo77 · 15/12/2013 14:35

I get very uncomfortable there. It's much better when I use aqueous cream. Apply some before bathing. Rinse off before getting out, dry by blotting then apply more. Also some toilet paper leaves bits which irritate. I find andrex puppies on a roll (!) best.

Could it be eczema? Dermatitis? Lichen sclerosis?

SuzySheepSmellsNice · 15/12/2013 14:45

Apparently I have a high ph in my general lady area, so I have to use wilko's own brand femfresh soap otherwise I get thrush-like symptoms. Not sure if this applies to littlies though. I'd go to another doctor tbh. I was misdiagnosed with thrush countless times. Even ph neutral soap makes me uncomfortable.

SoloXantiaClaws · 15/12/2013 14:53

I have taught my Dd to use just plain water. She only has showers, so there's no sitting in soapy water.

Soap is not good down there for any female and besides, it's self cleansing, it doesn't need perfume and plain water keeps it fresh.

passedgo · 15/12/2013 15:53

OP if she was woken up at 2am with the pain I think a doctor's trip is in order. She may have a urinary tract infection and this should not be taken lightly. Thrush doesn't wake you up with pain - itching perhaps, but not pain.

Please get her to the GP again.

RandomMess · 15/12/2013 15:56

Also ask for swabs to be taken, my dd has undiagnosed strep A for 18 months - they kept saying it was thrush despite the symptoms not matching, it was just very sore looking rather than anything else.

Use simple soap and no other bath products in the bath to ensure nothing can be irritating it.

mandmsmummy · 15/12/2013 16:42

Hi she says it hurts but I don't know if that pain or itchiness? What's strep A? I carried group strep B in both pregnancies, same thing? I took a sample of urine in last week and was ok. She is absolutely fine in herself. X

OP posts:
mandmsmummy · 15/12/2013 16:48

Ok I've just googled strep A and frightened myself to death! Was fine until I read the rare version can kill. My Dd has had a cough for nearly five weeks which I assumed is what's going around. She isn't poorly no temp just an awful cough. Doc has listened to her lungs and said they are clear. Is this linked to her soreness down below? Can someone calm me down please? X

Its probably a coincidence, but take her to the doctor anyway and get their professional opinion

passedgo · 15/12/2013 17:21

MandM, she's 3, her immune system is in development and she's in close contact with lots of other snotty children. For this reason she could catch anything but her immune system is constantly on the go and getting stronger. When something continues long term there will be an underlying cause because her fantastic youthful immune system hasn't fought it off.

It could be an allergy, could be asthma (the cough), could be a persistent infection.

I hope that puts your mind at rest. Also that the average toddler gets 13 colds per year so it is understandable to find it hard to diagnose when it's not a cold.

mandmsmummy · 15/12/2013 17:27

Thank you xx

Pretty sure I was told that it's totally normal to have 'white bits' (as you describe) inside. You're only supposed to wash the outside, and even that, just with water.

I definitely don't 'delve' (!) into DD's bits, I leave them to their own devices so to speak!

Have you been wiping everything from inside since she was a baby? With babywipes? That's got to hurt :S You're removing the natural protection she has.

I would personally get her looked at again, just to be sure, but then leave well alone! Sounds like someone else said you've been a little too vigorous with trying to clean her.

mandmsmummy · 15/12/2013 17:46

God I sound terrible! I really haven't been vigorous with her. She pretty much clamps her legs together as soon as I go near it always has done. Will ring docs tomorrow. Like I said she isn't poorly and this cough is I'm sure what's going around. Just never had a girl before so wondered if this was normal x

vulvovagintis? Stick to just water, no soap. Stay away from tights and avoid squash to drink.

Alternatively my dd has a weak bladder neck which means she feels 'drippy' sometimes. She used to get a bit sore because of this and sudocrem helped.

GP tested for thrush and uti as dd ussues went on for months - she would cry and say it was sore. He put it down 'little girls often have issues around toilet training'. Paediatrician disagreed and medicated but it took time.

Oblomov · 15/12/2013 21:20

I agree this us not ok. And the one thing you do need is a second opinion from a caring interested GP.

mandmsmummy · 15/12/2013 21:23

You say this is not ok but it seems very common? Having read posts on here. I will go back tomorrow but the health visitor nor the doctor were concerned x

One thing my 5yo dd does (developed by her own little self) is to put the hand shower on the floor of the shower so it is spraying upwards. She then squats over it to wash herself. I think it's a great way to clean all over that area, a bit like a home-made bidet.

I am surprised washing twice a week is considered ok. My Mum has spent her whole life battling thrush and has to wash twice a day to keep it bay, and also wear stockings instead of tights, cotton underwear, wash clothes in non biological powder, loose trousers etc. Actually now she is post menopausal it's cleared up as she's a bit drier down below.

Cluesue · 15/12/2013 21:30

My dd1 who is nearly 8 gets sore all the time,dr tested for uti, thrush etc and basically done shit all else,no help at all

Kahlua4me · 15/12/2013 21:34

My dd used to have similar problems a lot when younger. She has been so much better since having showers instead of a bath.

We did stop all bubble bath, which helped, and got her drinking water not squash. I cannot use bubble bath either as causes thrush, even sitting in the bath water makes me uncomfortable for a few days afterwards.

She rarely complains its sore now but when she does it is usually due to not drinking enough.

mandmsmummy · 15/12/2013 21:39

Love the squatting over a shower head tip! I'm guessing you don't put it on full pelt!! Grin x
