Advice for vomiting 10 mo old please

Dd has been vomiting since 2am. Is breastfed and taken a few small feeds this morning. Vomited them about hour later.
One small wee.
Fontanelle ok and still crying tears.

Should I give diaoralyte? She has no diarrheoa. Or just some water? Or just breastfeeds? She is refusing breast at the moment

Just to say I'm pretty sure it's just a stomach bug as we've been in contact with one and I've had it too

Bump

I would keep offering bf and also water and let her have what she wants. Keep a close eye on tears and fontanelle and if you get concerned call the ooh doctor. Hope she feels better soon

IcouldstillbeJoseph · 04/12/2013 19:20

Thanks - I called gp as no urine for 7 hours. He couldn't have been less concerned. Said don't bother with water and just bf, bf, bf.
My poor boobs are very saggy confused.

Gp's can be so unhelpful. I would try both bf and water, it's fluid right? if you are still worried tomorrow and there's still little wee take her for an emergency appt. My ds got dehydrated at 7 mths old due to another health issue he has but ended up on fluids in hospital.

IcouldstillbeJoseph · 04/12/2013 20:49

Agh another 2 huge vomits
Going to be a looooong night

Unfortunatley, milk of any kind (so I believe, could be wrong about bm) is the worse thing for a vomiting bug. I am guessing at 10 months your child is weaned, so I would personally hold off on any milk as it will just keep coming back up and just offer dry foods that they can manage, toast maybe? TBH whenever I have had it (a few times over the years) I don't want to eat or drink at all, however what does tend to stay down quite well and keep dehydration at bay is lemonade...shake it to remove the fizziness and perhaps offer that in a bottle for a day?? Not ideal but it works.

IcouldstillbeJoseph · 04/12/2013 20:54

She won't take a bottle - and is developmentally delayed so can't manage a cup either. It's boob or fluid syringed into her mouth and that's it
I'm pretty sure breastmilk doesn't count as 'dairy' as such but it's certainly all coming back up

pudseypie · 04/12/2013 20:58

Just keep syringing little bits of water in a little at a time. Even if she vomits a bit you need to keep trying the fluids

Showy · 04/12/2013 21:04

Just breastmilk is the right advice. It's easily digested, even if some comes up, there will be some kept down (as you noticed, there was a gap between feeding and being sick earlier, some fluids would be retained). All you can do is keep an eye on hydration levels, offer unfettered access to the breast and wait for it to pass. Snuggle up in bed together. Towels underneath you both so you can whip them away and protect the sheets. If she doesn't want to breastfeed then you could express or give water in a syringe. Just a few mls at a time. If you are worried about dehydration, 5mls every 15 minutes was what we once did.

DD had her first vomiting bug at 10 months, DS his first at 11 months. It seems interminable and is terrible seeing them so sick, but it passes.

Once she is wanting food again, no need to restrict her diet. They used to advise a bland diet but know now this is unnecessary.

Keep an eye on nappies, tears, wet mouth, fontanelle and cling onto the knowledge that she'll bounce back while you're left exhausted and shocked.

bonzo77 · 04/12/2013 21:09

I'd be thinking about a&e if her nappies are dry and she's not keeping much down. Little babies go downhill quite fast. Not super urgent, but tonight. In the mean time, in addition to BF, I'd try to syringe a little water into her mouth. Maybe 2-5 ml as often as you can. Also, I find mine like to suck water off a flannel or sponge. It sounds grim but it's quite a gentle way of getting some fluid in, though a bit messy.

Waiting for OOH gp to call back as vomiting green bile now

OP posts:
IcouldstillbeJoseph · 04/12/2013 21:46

Tears still being produced but fontanelle sunken
Only passed about 2 small amounts of urine since 6am

I really think if you've not heard from them within half an hour, take her to a&e. I was told by my GP and by NICU to just go to a&e, they're always happy to send home a healthy baby with reassured parent.

pudseypie · 05/12/2013 07:20

How is she doing? Just seen your update from last night. I would just second what other people said and take her to a&e now if you haven't already.

IcouldstillbeJoseph · 05/12/2013 07:31

Took her to ooh gp
He was happy she just could carry on bf too
I am hoping that the bile episode was the peak of it as we've had nothing further since then
She is wiped out, poor thing

Thank you all

Glad she's not being sick atm. She might be sick again all of a sudden. Don't worry. If she's got to the point of bringing up bile and has been sick several times, she'll have an aggravated stomach and it might be easily upset once eating and taking bigger feeds again. Sometimes dairy can be a problem post gastroenteritis too. It will pass though. Both of mine had awful nappies in the days following the vomiting and I think it was just the last of the virus coming out.

As I said yesterday, both of mine had their first gastro bugs at the same age. I found that afterwards they were very, very tired. Both slept an awful lot for a few days, to the point where I worried but it is normal and they are just recovering in the way nature intended.

Thanks she is so sleepy it's ridiculous! Thank goodness DS at pre school today
I've only got her up, changed her nappy and she's asleep again on me

Sorry to keep going on but we have had another 5 vomits and now over 48 hours
No diarrheoa
I'm wondering if I've been barking up wrong tree and this isn't a stomach bug? She's hot and won't do anything but sleep on me. Tell me I'm worrying over nothing

OP posts:
pudseypie · 06/12/2013 08:08

How is her fontanelle and is she bringing up green bile? is she weeing? I'd be concerned about dehydration as they can get dehydrated very quickly at that age.

Showy · 06/12/2013 08:28

I wouldn't be alarmed at her still being sick. 48 hours is normal. DD was sick for 4 days with her first gastrobug. And there won't be diarrhoea if food isn't getting digested and/or the bug is higher up in the system. I've had diarrhoea with no vomiting, vomiting with no diarrhoea and both together. Just depends on the virus and where it attacks.

If you are worried though you must seek medical advice. Being hot, sleeping on you, all totally normal for a virus like this. Dehydration is still your main concern but for your own peace of mind, especially it being Friday today, I'd get the once over as you sound like you're worried.

Does she rouse okay? Normal responsiveness when awake? No other new or changed symptoms?

devilinside · 06/12/2013 09:02

I was told to be concerned if the bile is yellow, also that as long as they are keeping fluids down for 15 mins they would absorb sufficient amounts

IcouldstillbeJoseph · 06/12/2013 09:47

Got a gp appt this morning
