Dd has been vomiting since 2am. Is breastfed and taken a few small feeds this morning. Vomited them about hour later.
One small wee.
Fontanelle ok and still crying tears.

Should I give diaoralyte? She has no diarrheoa. Or just some water? Or just breastfeeds? She is refusing breast at the moment

I feel foolish - he said yep, just a tummy bug, press on with the breastfeeds.
I just can't believe it's making her this unwell. If she is awake she is inconsolable. And she's not my first child, and DS had plenty of bugs and I've not known anything like this. Hey ho

I guess I was just hopeful there would be improvement by now

Did he check her for signs of dehydration? It's gone on for a while now. Is she still puking up bile? I know tummy bugs are really distressing at the time but I think if she hasn't improved tomorrow i'd go and get more advice. Don't want to scare you with my tales, but based on a couple of experiences with 3 different gp's, I don't trust the gp's any more with my ds and I trust my instinct instead.

Crap isn't it, the first time DD had a bug it was like this, she stopped vomiting after one week and 2 trips to A & E we had to cancel Christmas, yet she still managed to pass the entire bug onto my family when they came over for New Year (this was two weeks later)

IcouldstillbeJoseph · 06/12/2013 18:16

He said her mucous membranes were still moist so she was ok
She hasn't vomited bile today - just breastmilk
I thought she may have been perking up slightly but she's just vomited again and will not entertain anything other than writing around in my arms Sad

And she has just been sick again after a day of not being sick. This is doing my head in but I'm so reluctant to go to gp again as I've already been twice and told basically to stop worrying

When my 13 month old had his first rotavirus bug he was sick for a week and had runs for 2 weeks...we ended up in a and e twice with him but the dr said it would take that long and he was right :(
If it's any consolation, the first infection is the worst, they do get a level of immunity as they get older.
(Although my ds2 is 5 and had it last week!)

Badvocatyuletide · 08/12/2013 09:34

...oh and he slept al lot too.
But - as other poster said - do trust your instinct, if you are unhappy get a second opinion.
X

Would she take a diaraltye from a syringe?
That's what we had to do with ds2 for well over a week.
In fact we had to teach him how to drink from a cup again afterwards :(

IcouldstillbeJoseph · 08/12/2013 11:13

Thanks - it's reassuring to hear this. I've never known anything like it.
Nope. She won't take diaoralyte (although I don't blame her!) from a syringe. She just gags. She will only breastfeed (and then bring that back up).
No diarrheoa yet....

I am having a very similar problem with an 8-month old. I don't mean to hijack the thread, but just ask some questions that hopefully help the OP too.

My husband brought up his first children 20 years ago, and of course in this situation they used to starve the baby (water only) for 24 hours. The NHS clearly say now to keep giving usual milk on demand, as much as they want, and hope that a proportion stays in, and eventually their antibodies will fight back. I'm just wondering why precisely they changed advice? I need to convince my husband! Can you do physiologicial or psychological damage with starvation? I would assume so, but need some official text to back me up - I can't find any online.

We've compromised on 2oz + 2oz formula an hour apart, trying to console him in between. Then play listlessly or sleep for an hour and start again. This does actually seem to be working - whereas 4oz at once came straight back up. But he is desperately unhappy for the hour in between and I worry about losing his trust, or hurting his tummy.

Rice cakes and water came back up too. It started Friday 7am, last vomit was Saturday 7pm. Nothing so far today but my husband insists we stick with the 2+2 until we've had 24h vomiting-free.

(To top it all off, the two of us then started vomiting Saturday eve - oh joy of joys!)

badvocat - was the diarrhoea at the same time as the vomiting? DD hasn't had a poo at all since Tuesday....I'd sort of feel better if she had something come out that end iyswim!

It is a long time not even having had one poo .... keep breastfeeding often and little and hopefully enough stays in.

I hope she still has enough wet (not just damp) nappies, does she still have tears etc. You can also do the skin fold test. You pinch a piece of skin and it should go straight back and not stay upwards (google if not clear). The key is to stay on the look-out for dehydration symptoms.

If in any doubt contact OOH or GP again. Dehydration is serious. She may have been ok when GP checked her out, this does not mean that she can't dehydrate now. Most tummy bugs will last 24-48 hours but some particularly nasty ones can go on for a lot longer.
