Baby scratched near eye by cat - advice please!

6.5 month old scratched this morning by our cat. Scratch above eye and just below. Had good look in eye and can't see any signs if scratch. Have cleaned, put antiseptic cream on cut above eye. Put breast milk below eye and in eye.

Cat is an indoor cat and up to date with vaccines etc.

Should I take him to Doctor or do anything else? I know to look for redness/swelling etc.

Thanks

I think you should take him to the GP -there may be a scratch on the eye's surface that you can't see. You say there is a scratch above and below the eye -could a third claw have gone into the eye?

Even with an indoor cat there will be loads of germs on the claws -litter tray?

I think better safe than sorry. I would go to the GP. I had an incredible infection from a cat scratch. And in or near the eye is pretty serious if an infection begins.

Re the breastmilk -is breastmilk a sterile fluid completely free of bacteria or anything which might cause/exacerbate eye problems?

EmmaLL25 · 02/12/2013 11:40

I just know breast milk is recommended for eye infections in babies ( by hv). Friend used it on her wee one and it cleared up a treat.

Seems a safer thing to put near eye than creams.

Think I'll call duty doc.

Thanks. He seems fine and it looks a lot better. Spoke with HV who agreed - said he be crying if there had been any eye damage. Also agreed breastmilk was fine to use!

I thought this might be a "should we get rid of the cat?" (Yes) but I would take baby to the doctors ASAP.

DameEdnasBridesmaid · 02/12/2013 20:43

And get rid of the cat

usualsuspect · 02/12/2013 20:44

Don't get rid of the cat.

MoreThanChristmasCrackers · 02/12/2013 20:45

Get rid of the cat, do not get another, take baby to doctors.

firstpost · 02/12/2013 20:50

Cannot believe anyone would suggest "getting rid" of a cat so casually Hmm

usualsuspect · 02/12/2013 20:53

It seems to be the MN way, just lately.

QueenElizabethTheZygon · 02/12/2013 20:54

If a cat scratched my child I'd sodding get rid of it too, kids come first to me.

usualsuspect · 02/12/2013 20:56

What would you do with it?

LoreleisSecret · 02/12/2013 21:00

Why are we getting rid of the cat ?Confused

Probably would give it to a rescue centre etc, I wouldn't kill it, I'm not depraved.

ForTheLoveOfSocks · 02/12/2013 21:19

If it was a dog then the chorus would be to get rid Hmm

At the end of the day if an animal has shown aggression that should not be taken lightly.

Op I hope your little one is ok. But I do think you should consider re homing.

Oh for fucks sake, do not get rid of the cat and ignore the idiots who spout it out.

As for your baby, I would be keeping a look out for any redness, swelling or discharge and visit GP if you see any signs.

mummyto2boysandagirl3 · 02/12/2013 21:33

I'm not a cat lover if I'm honest but I think it's a bit harsh telling someone to just get rid of their cat we don't know how it happened. Op asked for advice on treating the scratch should they go to the dr they didn't ask should they get rid of their cat.

Sounds like ur dc is on the mend op how u r both ok

OP - Never, ever, ever mention pets and babies cohabiting on MN. Ever.

keep the cat, ignore the loonies

Hope your ds is feeling better.

ForTheLoveOfSocks · 02/12/2013 21:40

pingu ODFOD.

An idiot would only justify an animal attacking a child, whatever the context or provocation on the child's part

D0oinMeCleanin · 02/12/2013 21:41

Where did the OP say the cat had been aggressive? Confused

usualsuspect · 02/12/2013 21:42

Did the OP ask if She should get rid of the cat?

Have some of you got lost on the way to AIBU?

ForTheLoveOfSocks · 02/12/2013 21:58

I just take an animal attack seriously, what's wrong with that?

If you don't think a cat scratching a baby's face is aggressive then what do you think is?

DameEdnasBridesmaid · 02/12/2013 21:59

Bewildered on how a cat could near enough to a baby to scratch it?
Although plenty of posters seem to think that's ok and to just get the baby checked out. Probably the baby's fault for provoking it. Hmm
