Should I be worried? He's had very little fluid today, maybe 6 small a sips in total since a good feed of milk at 6:40 this morning, although he did eat some frontage frais. I'm worries about such a LOW temp now although I don't know what a low temperature means

Ear thermometer? Likely a dodgy reading than an actual temperature.

DeathByLaundry · 09/11/2013 23:37

How does he feel to touch? And how is he? And how did you measure his temperature?

gd1976 · 09/11/2013 23:37

Yes ear thermometer , that makes me feel better

He's feeling fine temp wise now, not too hot or cold. Very shallow breathing but I momentarily woke him up taking temp and he opened his eyes and made normal noises

How old is he? Ear thermometers aren't recommended for young children as their ear canals are small which means you can easily get a dodgy reading.

Try taking it again, with an underarm thermometer if you have one. If he has a fever you need to try to get some more fluid into him.

DeathByLaundry · 09/11/2013 23:40

Agree a dodgy reading most likely. I binned my ear thermometer for that reason, I rely on my own feeling now.

Worth rechecking shortly, make sure you pull his ear back to straighten the canal.

gd1976 · 09/11/2013 23:40

Also his temp was 39.1 at 3:30pm so when I took his temp half and hour ago I was expecting it to have gone up again as the nurofen I gave him at 3:30pm would have worn off, so I was quite shocked to see how low it is.....

Try the thermometer again, sounds like it wasn't in his ear properly. If it still comes up low, try taking your own temp to see if the thermometer is playing up.

PacificDogwood · 09/11/2013 23:41

Yep, unreliable ear thermometer. Or ear wax Grin.

Did he wee today?
And he seems ok to you now?
How old is he?

gd1976 · 09/11/2013 23:42

Thank you all. He's 20 months, have always used this thermometer for both children over 5 years and always felt it was pretty accurate but you never know.....

OP posts:
gd1976 · 09/11/2013 23:43

Yes his nappy was a bit wet at bath time

OP posts:
BeaWheesht · 09/11/2013 23:43

A low temp can be a sign of a serious infection. Given his other symptoms I'd be checking his temp again, checking the thermometer in my ear and then calling for medical advice.

Also when did he last wee? Does he have a wet mouth? Does the skin on his hand ping back immediately if you pinch it?

gd1976 · 09/11/2013 23:43

Thank you everyone, thank god for mumsnet Smile

Ok bees ill go and do those things now and get back

OP posts:
PacificDogwood · 09/11/2013 23:44

Ah well, good, I wouldn't worry too much about the low reading.
Hopefully he'll wake up feeling much better in the morning Smile

gd1976 · 09/11/2013 23:47

His temp now 36.3, I feel a bit silly in case just dodge thermometer reading...... Can the temp change that quickly?

OP posts:
BeaWheesht · 09/11/2013 23:50

36.3 isn't too bad - just check again and if around the same don't worry. I suspect you didn't have it in his ear quite right first time round.

Wht about signs of dehydration I mentioned earlier though? Also you said his breathing was shallow?

noblegiraffe · 09/11/2013 23:54

If I put my thermometer next to my ear but not in it I get a temp of 34.1 so it'll be that rather than a mysteriously changing temperature. :)

noblegiraffe · 09/11/2013 23:55

But yes, do check for dehydration if he hasn't drank all day.

gd1976 · 09/11/2013 23:57

His breathing was more audible just now but without waking him up I can't tell about his mouth..... His nappy was wet At 7pm though..... Should I perus checking his mouth?

OP posts:
gd1976 · 09/11/2013 23:57

Persue!!

OP posts:
Opheliabumps · 09/11/2013 23:59

Don't feel silly, we've all been there, and when they're already poorly it's easy to jump to conclusions. Can you pop him into bed with you, to keep an eye on him overnight, I always find I sleep better if they're next to me and i can see/hear they're ok Grin

gd1976 · 10/11/2013 00:01

I don't think he or I would sleep in same bed Although I have our bedroom door open and he's opposite ..... I think I worry more as my children get older as I've heard so many horror stories!

OP posts:
Opheliabumps · 10/11/2013 00:03

Also, will he sip some water in his sleep? Do his eyes look sunken, when dd was dehydrated she looked dreadful, poor little mite (had been nil by mouth in preparation for surgery, so I couldn't even give her a drink).
