13 year old DD with persistent morning nausea

Hollysaura · 02/07/2013 10:56

My 13 year old DD has been suffering with nausea every morning for the last week. She has not been sick. It normally goes by lunch time. Went to docs yesterday and no wee infection & def not pregnant! She hasn't started periods yet, not stressed or anxious about anything, and has been eating normally. We have tried lots of things....ginger, travel bands, eating regularly (when she can), getting up earlier and nothing has worked. Worried that she is missing school and I'm having to take time off work. Anyone got any advice/suggestions? Thanks

My daughter had something similar, first they said it was abdominal migraine and after drugs didn't work, that made her into a zombie, they decided it was called mesenteric adenitis, an inflammation of the glands in the stomach, she did go onto have glandular fever after several months of the MA.

The consultant said unexplained abdominal pain is quite common in this age group, but do get her checked out.

Redruth1234 · 11/03/2016 10:10

Hi, I know this was some time ago, but wondered if you ever had a diagnosis of what was wrong with her? My older daughter had something similar to this 3 years ago which led to a long period off school and she was diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome in the end but the nausea and sickness was never explained. Now my younger daughter (12) is going through the same thing and no one can explain it. Looking for any help I can find!

Pomegranatemolasses · 13/03/2016 22:38

*Redruth, I just wanted to say that my DD had persistent nausea and fatigue for monthes when she was 12.

It did eventually go away of its own accord, and I often wondered if it was some sort of viral issue/hormone related/mild glandular fever or none of those!

It seems more than a coincidence that all of our daughters have been around the same age and developmental stage when this occured.

DD is now a healthy 14yo, no reoccurance of nausea symptoms.

Interested to find this thread, even if it's old now. I wonder if any of you have any more news on this? My 11 year old has been nauseous every morning for 5 days now. It tends to get a bit better later in the day but if she eats and then tries to do something too soon she often finds herself feeling sic again. She had the same thing almost exactly a year ago and when poo tests etc were negative Dr said abdominal migraine. But she doesn't have much stomach pain - more that her stomach feels tight or tense as she puts it. It's mainly nausea, not wanting to eat or drink much, and a bit of a headache. And last year it was over a week before she was back to school which is longer than most published stuff suggests abdominal migraine attacks last, although some of the other symptoms seem to match.

We are going through this atm. My 12yo feel's sick every morning. She has lost her spark and has missed 23 days of school since the beginning of December. Not sure what to do had blood tests. Help!

Harriedgymmum · 19/01/2017 18:13

Following with interest.

My 16 year old daughter has had this on and off since September. She says she just feels nauseous sometimes with a headache.
She started at a new sixth form college, but says she is happy and settled there with friends. She does not appear anxious or worrried.
We have been to the doctors and tried an antacid, but this did not help, nor did she like the taste!
She has had a whole battery of blood tests - all came back normal, although her B12, folate and white blood cells were on the low side of normal. She started her periods around her 16th birthday, had one, then no more.
She was negative for h.pylori from a stool sample. Negative for UTI in a urine sample.
She has no weight loss, is not pregnant and is negative for coeliac.
She refuses breakfast, then I get messages from her at school to say she feels unwell and can she come home. Upon coming home, she might go for a lie down, eats very little but then seems to perk up.
I'm trying to get her to go to bed earlier, but she says she's not tired at 9.30.
She is missing all sorts of career info this week at school, meetings regarding work placements and to be honest I'm getting a bit frustrated now.
She is a bit of a complainer when it comes to health issues and tells me about every sniff, lump and bruise, but I'm starting to get concerned that there might be actually some underlying physiological cause.
She has had repeat blood tests last week to check her white blood cells again and we have an appointment to see the GP again next week for review. If her periods have not restarted, I will be asking for investigations for this. I'm wondering about glandular fever, although I'm unsure she presents in the classic way for this.
In addition, she has hypermobile joints and also misses college with physiotherapist appointments. I'm not sure if the hypermobility might be linked in some way to the nasea although I'm clutching at straws here?!
So I'm following with interest in the hope that someone can shed light on it all.

Could be hormone related. I used to suffer terribly with nausea in the week before my period as a teenager. Still do sometimes now as a 30-something year old but after two hyperemesis pregnancies, the monthly nausea is less of a problem than it used to be!

Nicsav11 · 12/08/2017 08:55

We're the same with our 11 year old daughter. She has had 2 months of abdominal pain and nausea. I have seen 3 gps, 1 nurse, 1 paediatrician and 1 gastro paediatrician. All tests negative. She is on 8 weeks of omaprozole which I'm told are 'unlikely to help'. And told could be a placebo! I have been sent home and told it could be unexplained. My daughter is half the happy girl she was. She has had to stop competitive swimming which she gave her heart and sole to and wanted a sports career. Most days she is crying and inside I'm heartbroken, but I can't find anyone to help and give us a diagnosis. Can it be right that children are left like this?

RudeDog · 12/08/2017 09:09

DD had stomach problems earlier this year - GP thought it might have been the glands in the back of her stomach as other glands were raised.

He did say it's very hard to diagnose as they are so buried but can be the source of many stomach issues in the young

awrightmylover · 12/08/2017 09:17

I had this on and off from 15- in my case it was due to stress and anxiety. What happens is the early morning cortisol kicks in on an empty stomach and it really hurts. Maybe you could get her to eat something late at night to mop up the cortisol? Or keep some biscuits by her bed to nibble at first thing.

How does she get on with her friends, OP?

ThePurpleOneWithTheNut · 12/08/2017 09:24

Another suggestion is Mesenteric Adenitis.

I'd never heard of it until last year when my Dd (15) kept complaining of tummy pain.

Of course I assumed it could be stress or period pain or constipation etc and treated her with paracetamol. I took her to a GP who seemed stumped.

One night it suddenly got so much worse I took her straight to hospital convinced she had appendicitis. She was in agony writhing about Sad. Even the hospital thought appendicitis initially and she nearly went down to theatre.

But a consultant realised it was Mesenteric Adenitis and after a few days of waiting and watching it eased off. She was in hospital for 3 days.

Thankfully no further episodes. It was horrible and the strangest thing Confused

junebirthdaygirl · 12/08/2017 09:56

My ds had nausea every morning and stomach pains. Saw every gp at our local practice. All said anxiety ..school related etc. Turned out eventually to be tonsils. Had them out. Never a pain again..ln all the visits nobody had looked at his tonsils as no sore throat.

RudeDog · 12/08/2017 11:27

@junebirthdaygirl DD had raised tonsils - apparently tonsils and glands in stomach are linked

SP40 · 25/05/2018 10:59

Hi all
I know this is a very old blog, but my DD have got the same morning nausea. Shes 11. It all started after the wrong antibiotic was given to her and apparently killed all her good bacteria in her stomach. She was being sick for a week in the mornings, and after that is just the feeling in the mornings. Never complained of stomach pain though. Its been 3 months and she still has the sickness feeling in the mornings. She used to get light headed as well, but that has been better. All the blood test and other check-ups came out fine. No constipation. No problem at school. She is preparing for 11+. But she doesn’t seem to be stressed, and she is in a good level.
Those of you that had the same issue, how are your daughters now? Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks

longshot · 25/05/2018 23:34

Sorry haven’t read the whole thread but wanted be to reply...

I have suffered from nausea for prolonged times at various times.
The only things I can say have hands down helped are a really high quality pro biotic (as someone else said I had had a lot of antibiotics and think that hasn’t helped things). I also got some medication called cyclizine from the GP, I rarely need this now because I think of the pro biotics but if I need it I take one. I think for me it’s hugely related to hormones so perhaps could be that with your daughter? I also now have kefir (you can buy in Sainsbury’s as a yoghurt drink) and that’s helped too.

The other thing is I try to eat less wheat and More protein when I feel nauseous. I have no food intolerances but find this helps when I’m nauseous.

I hope she feels better soon!

SP40 · 26/05/2018 09:44

Longshot thanks for ur reply. We have tried probiotics for 3 months and nothing has changed.. she has also started feeling sick in the afternoon as well, past 4 days!

FuckingHateRain · 26/05/2018 13:14

There are so many probiotics out there, it depends on what the exactly you use
If it's after antibiotics use it's more likely a good probiotic will sort it
Try Symprove, it's liquid probiotics goes straight to gut, must be on empty stomach for a good half hour . Try couple times a day a good quantity- it's expensive sorry

SP40 · 26/05/2018 14:38

Thanks so much, I’ll try anything to get her better.. its been 3 months since her antibiotics, but hopefully this will work. X

Jsyrose · 11/06/2018 11:28

Read through these looking for advice as my teen also suffering from nausea and stomach pain. Has had IBS type symptoms for years (since 10 & now 15) but the morning nausea is new. Also missing mornings off school, sometimes days. Still hungry and eats but feels unwell for hours, sometimes the whole day. Also extremely tired with little energy. Has been on medication for severe depression for about 6 months but symptoms pre date this. Doctors not able to offer any help and blood tests come back negative. I'll try Symprove as we've not tried that before but any other suggestions welcome.

Parsleyslocker · 20/11/2018 09:33

Hello, can you offer an update, did you find out the root cause? My 14 year old DD is suffering similarly, want to try to help her. Thanks in advance

BlackInk · 20/11/2018 12:18

If it's only been going on for a week, it's quite possible that it could be some kind of mild stomach virus.

How has she been on weekend mornings?

Having said that, I can remember having a few days of nausea/tummy ache at a similar age and then a few weeks later my first period showed up. Maybe related or maybe a coincidence.

The upper stomach discomfort also sounds as though it could be indigestion. Have you tried giving her an antacid and see if that helps?

Hope she feels better soon :)

Lovingmumof4 · 27/09/2019 07:28

It could be to do with anxiety I used to be the same I would wake up on a school morning and feel terrible but when I went to school by lunch time I was fine try talking to her about if there's anything she nervous about

ZOMBIE THREAD

BridgetArwen · 27/11/2019 20:50

I have joined Mumsnet just to share this. My daughter suffered from ‘morning sickness’ for 3 weeks. Eventually admitted to hospital where POTs syndrome was diagnosed. Worth mentioning to your GP if your teenager is suffering.
