Wheezing into 2013 - Support thread for parents of asthmatics

As the old thread is filling up I thought I would get a new one started!

This thread is for anyone with a child with asthma, or asthma type symptoms. Between us we have to much experience of inhalers, nebulisers, steroids, sats and all things asthma!

Good luck for Thursday, do you think they will change his meds again?

They have put him back on the seretide and go back in 4 weeks to see how we are doing then.

How is everyone doing?

Just out of a and e with DS and he has his second course of pred in 3 weeks now Thankfully at the consultnt on Thursday anway

Oh sirzy sorry he is not well again, do you think it's since being back on seritide?

We finally managed to wean DS off ventolin after 6 weeks, the difference in him is unbelievable, he is always agitated and hyper when on pred and ventolin, normal service has been resumed ...... For now
We're seeing his consultant on Monday

Im not sure lolli, neither seem to help him enough. Hoping the consultant has some magic answers!

Hi. Haven't posted here before but hoping someone on this thread can help me. My son has had asthma since a baby. His dad has quite severe asthma too. He's had a very tough time since start of year and in last 2 months, 3 trips to hospital and almost constant prednisolone. He's currently taking clenil modulate 100 and serevent twice a day and montelukast at night (and a lot of ventolin) but today has been given fostair inhaler to replace these. What I'm wondering is if anyone has any experience of this inhaler as it says not for anyone under 18. The dr says this just means it is not licensed yet but I'm still concerned. He's only 10 (and very small for his age). We have a consultant ant appointment in July but this has been done by gp.

Your poor chap, sounds like he is having a tough time, and you must me too

personally I would be wary of anything of that level being prescribed by a GP, but that is me personally based on my experiences with my GP
can you call and speak to your consultant? Or leave an urgent message with their secretary for them to call you back?

My DS is in an unlicensed preventer for his age, and it's because they cannot ethically test the drug on a young child, but I trust my consultant as they are specialist in their field, a GP however is not.

I would call first thing tomorrow if you are worried about giving it to him

I was going to say exactly the same as lolli. I would phone your consultants secretary tomorrow and get him to make the decision.

Thanks for the advice. We've been advised to go ahead and try. His asthma is very worrying at the moment

Well consultant decided we needed to give the seretide longer which I agree with. He has given us a peakflow to try to monitor things more.

He is struggling agin tonight though. Coughing and complaining of a sore chest.

That's good news Sirzy, not so good news about his chest tonight though

DS has his appointment tomorrow, I'm going to ask for some allergy testing, I'm pretty sure he has hay fever, his eyes were streaming yesterday and was sneezing a lot too.
I'm pretty sure they won't change any of his meds at the moment, he does seem to be making an improvement with his asthma, and by improvement I mean he isn't in hospital once a month!

Appt went well, no change to meds but have put him on Loratadine for the hayfever, she could hear that he had a wheeze whilst we were there so back on inhalers.
She was also concerned about DD as she was coughing a lot during his appt so had a little listen to her chest, she is wheezing too

Hope the loratadine works and your DD is ok too

Anybody else's dc suffering in this weather.Dd's astham has been getting worse all day, if it doesn't improve may have to take her to OOH or a+e as her peak flow keeps dropping and she is constantly coughing, she doesn't normally get an audible wheeze but a short cough which sounds like she constantly trying to clear her throat or chest

hi I hope it's ok to post here. my 16 month dd doesn't have diagnosis of asthma but doc thinks she has broncho spasm, which I think might lead you asthma...but she's too young to diagnose, does that sound right to people? she has a brown inhaler she uses every day and blue (ventolin I think) for when she's bad. she doesn't seem to have difficulty breathing but has coughing fits which can make her puke. have others had similar experiences? did others start off with these symptoms and get diagnosed with asthma when older? many thanks for any help

DS isn't liking this summer at all, just had a phone consult and they are sending him out 5 days of pred so hopefully that will get rid of whatever his problem is!

Checking in, all has been quiet, no hospital admissions since February, which is amazing for DS
We've had a few flare ups requiring pred and lots of ventolin.
The sunny weather has worked wonders for DS once we started the antihistamines.

However it's now turned a little colder and damper and were back to square one he's been up all night coughing despite copious amounts of ventolin

...... And now all checked in at the children's ward

Blue lighted to the hospital earlier today and were now on the ward on hourly Nebs

the 5 day course of pred worked miracles with DS up til yesterday. Back to coughing again today though :(

I doubt it, he was on oxygen and Nebs the whole night so I can't see us going home today.

We got discharged this morning, the community nurse is coming out later today to check him but he seems much better
