Possible UTI what should I do?

I'm potty training DS and he's not having accidents, he's holding in. Well this morning he had a slight fever, this afternoon it's 39.7. I've calpol-ed him up.

But stupidly I've googled and am now worried he may have a UTI/bladder infection. Can't get a GP appointment until tomorrow.
What should I do?

He's not his usual happy self, he had an afternoon nap which is virtually unheard of, he says he's not poorly and doesn't hurt.

Keep his temp down, encourage hom to drink and if possible get a sample to tale to drs. I think morning pee is preferred.

Don't goggle Smile

If I phone the GP at 8:30 they'll possibly get him an appt, but can't promise. I'll kick up a major fuss, if we can't! I've sterilised a little tub with a lid so that I can hopefully get a sample in the morning.

Always when DH is away. Always. Sad. Last time DH was away we ended up in hospital with gastroenteritis. He's not a happy bunny.

Could you drop a sample down to your treatment room/ nurse, without an appointment? Or speak to the dr?

GaryTankCommander · 21/08/2012 16:36

No apparently not. Sad

The calpol/nurofen is controlling the fever.

Definitely kick up a fuss in the morning then! Hope he has a restful night.

GaryTankCommander · 21/08/2012 16:49

Thank you.

Was it a receptionist you spoke to or a GP?

They shouldn't be fobbing you off, UTIs can be serious in young children. Call back and say you are bringing him and sample in.

cocolepew · 21/08/2012 17:23

Did you tell them it was a child? (Not implying you're daft!)

GaryTankCommander · 21/08/2012 17:44

Oh dear. I didn't tell the receptionist that I thought it was a UTI?! I'm not 100% sure it is. He has a fever and has been holding his wee in. Oh dear. He's just had a wee in his nappy and it smells strong but just of wee. He says his tummy or his willy doesn't hurt. And googling was what worried me about UTI. I think I'm just going to have to watch him like a hawk tonight and take him to a&e if necessary.

I wish I hadn't started potty training. I thought we'd have wee everywhere. I never imagined that he'd hold it in.

What do you mean by he's holding his wee in?

GaryTankCommander · 21/08/2012 18:10

Sorry you've not seen my potty training thread. He's not weeing until he's almost fit to burst. I've somehow managed to terrify him of his potty and of weeing in general.

Oh ok, I'm well passed potty training threads Grin. TBH I would leave it awhile.

Make sure he drinks loads Smile

GaryTankCommander · 21/08/2012 18:15

I'm texting my mum and she says to let him sleep and keep checking his temp. There's always a&e if I get worried (get being a rather absurd word - because I'm a born worrier where my DS is concerned). I just wish I'd not started potty training, I seem to have terrified him out of weeing anywhere... Potties, nappies, anywhere!

OP posts:
cocolepew · 21/08/2012 18:20

Dont panic, all you need to do is manage his temp like your mum said. Dont be waking him to check it, if he's sleeping that's fine. Nothing awful will happen if it is a uti and you cant see the dr until tomorrow Smile.

cocolepew · 21/08/2012 18:23

What age is he? Personally I would forget about training him for now, it sounds a bit fraught!

GaryTankCommander · 21/08/2012 18:35

He's 2.6. Everyone including nursery told me I should do it now, that he was ready. He obviously is in terms of bladder control but emotionally I think he's not so assuming I can convince him to wee in nappies again he's back in nappies tomorrow.

Thank you for being nice and reassuring.

Agree, leave the potty training for now. This happened with DD when we tried to potty train her- we ended up in A&E with her having a bad UTI. We put her back in nappies as she was terrified of 'letting her wee out' and two months later she announced that she was going to start weeing in the potty and trained herself.

Hope he feels better soon.

GaryTankCommander · 21/08/2012 18:51

Why don't any of the books I have talk about this, they all talk about accidents and what not and of fear of the potty, but not holding it in.

OP posts:
cocolepew · 21/08/2012 18:52

Was he able to wee ok when he wore nappies ?

GaryTankCommander · 21/08/2012 18:57

What before potty training... Yes no probs at all. Since potty training I seem to have put the fear into him about weeing anywhere including nappies. He's done a wee tonight (in the bath Blush) and there's a tiny one in his nappy. He's asleep now, but restless. I think well end up at a&e it's just a question of when. Sad

OP posts:
cocolepew · 21/08/2012 19:01

So everything works ok then Smile

Why do you think you'll end up in A&E?

GaryTankCommander · 21/08/2012 19:06

Because I am a panicer and a worrier. Sad

OP posts:
tethersend · 21/08/2012 19:06

I have to say, I'm not convinced that DD got a UTI because she held it in, I think it may have been a coincidence. I'm not sure.

Even holder-inners are out of nappies in the end. It may be best to wait until he tells you he's ready, rather than looking for the signs IYSWIM.

GaryTankCommander · 21/08/2012 19:08

And it doesn't help DH is away. He's so much more sensible than me, he'd calm me down. As it is I'm on my own terrified that DS is poorly.

I'm overreacting aren't I? He has a fever, that's it. I need to 'man up' for want of a better word.

OP posts:
tethersend · 21/08/2012 19:09

Oh, don't worry- even if you do go to A&E, they'll more than likely test the sample and send you home with antibiotics.

Good luck Smile
